Ibn al-Barri said: 'Al-'alall and al-nahal are used for nursing as they are used for watering.'

وإبل على: عوال

And camels that are thirsty: 'awāl.

تبك الحوض علاها ونهلا

She drinks from the pool, her second drink and her first gulp.

إذا وردت الإبل الماء فالسقية الأولى النهل، والثانية العلل

When camels come to water, the first drink is al-nahal, and the second is al-'alall.

وأعللت الإبل إذا أصدرتها قبل ريها

And the camels were made to leave before being fully watered, if they were sent away before their thirst was quenched.

أعللت الإبل فهي إبل عالة إذا أصدرتها ولم تروها

The camels were made to leave, and they are 'ālah camels, if you send them away without them being fully watered.

وأما أعللت الإبل وعللتها فهما ضدا أغللتها، لأن معنى أعللتها وعللتها أن تسقيها الشربة الثانية ثم تصدرها رواء

As for 'a'lalat al-ibil and 'allaltuha, they are the opposite of aghlalatuha, because the meaning of 'a'lalatuha and 'allaltuha is to give them the second drink and then send them away fully sated.

من جزيل عطائك المعلول

From your abundant, repeatedly given bounty.

And I think what made its transitive use to two objects permissible is that 'allaltu here means 'aṭ'amtu (to feed).

The striker repeated the blows on the one struck, if he followed up the striking.

والعلل من الطعام: ما أكل منه

And al-'alall from food: what has been eaten from.

خليلي، هبا عللاني وانظرا إلى البرق ما يفري السنى، كيف يصنع

My two friends, come and entertain me with talk and look at the lightning, how it strikes the shining light.

وتعلل بالأمر واعتل: تشاغل

And he occupied himself with the matter and found an excuse: he was distracted.

علله بطعام وحديث ونحوهما: شغله بهما

He occupied him with food and talk and the like: he distracted him with them.

عللت المرأة صبيها بشيء من المرق ونحو ليجزأ به عن اللبن

The woman gave her child something to distract him with from the milk.

وفي حديث أبي حثمة يصف التمر: تعلة الصبي وقرى الضيف

And in the hadith of Abu Hathmah describing dates: 'A distraction for the child and hospitality for the guest.'

وأتي بعلالة الشاة فأكل منها

And some leftover meat of the sheep was brought to him, and he ate from it.

والعلل أيضا: جمع العلول، وهو ما يعلل به المريض من الطعام الخفيف

And al-'alall is also the plural of 'alūl, which is the light food with which the sick person is sustained.

ويقال لبقية اللبن في الضرع وبقية قوة الشيخ: علالة

And the remainder of the milk in the udder and the remaining strength of an old man is called 'alālah.

والعلالة: بقية اللبن وغيره

And al-'alālah: the remainder of milk and other things.

وقد تعاللت ذميل العنس

And the she-camel exerted her utmost effort in her pace.

وقيل: العلالة اللبن بعد حلب الدرة تنزله الناقة

And it was said: Al-'alālah is the milk that the she-camel lets down after milking the udder.

أحمل أمي وهي الحماله، ... ترضعني الدرة والعلاله

I carry my mother, and she is the burden-bearer, ... she nurses me with the first milk and the subsequent milk.

وقد عاللت الناقة، والاسم العلال

And the she-camel was milked repeatedly, and the noun is al-'ilāl.

والعلالة، بالضم: ما تعللت به أي لهوت به

And al-'alālah (with dammah): what you amused yourself with, meaning what you played with.

وتعللت بالمرأة تعللا: لهوت بها

And he dallied with the woman, playing with her.

والعل: التيس الضخم العظيم

And al-'all: the large, great he-goat.

والعل: القراد الضخم، وجمعها علال

And al-'all: the large tick, and its plural is 'ilāl.

والعل: الكبير المسن

And al-'all: the old, aged one.

ورجل عل: مسن نحيف ضعيف صغير الجثة، شبه بالقراد فيقال: كأنه عل

And a man 'all: old, thin, weak, small in stature, likened to a tick, so it is said: 'He is like a tick.'

And al-'illah: the co-wife.

وبنو العلات: بنو رجل واحد من أمهات شتى

And Banu al-'allāt: children of one father from different mothers.

وإنما سميت علة لأنها تعل بعد صاحبتها، من العلل

It is only called 'illah because she comes after her co-wife, from al-'alall (successive).

عليها ابن علات، إذا اجتش منزلا

Upon her is the son of co-wives, when he travels through a settlement.

الأنبياء أولاد علات ؛ معناه أنهم لأمهات مختلفة ودينهم واحد

The Prophets are 'children of 'allāt'; meaning they are from different mothers and their religion is one.

يتوارث بنو الأعيان من الإخوة دون بني العلات

The children of the same father and mother inherit from each other, while the children of co-wives do not inherit from each other.

والناس أبناء علات، فمن علموا أن قد أقل، فمجفو ومحقور

And people are children of co-wives; whoever they know has become poor is shunned and despised.

أفي الولائم أولادا لواحدة، ... وفي المآتم أولادا لعلات؟

Are they children of one mother at feasts, ... and children of co-wives at funerals?

وقد اعتل العليل علة صعبة

And the sick person became severely ill.

والعلة المرض

And al-'illah is illness.

عل يعل واعتل أي مرض، فهو عليل

'Alla, ya'illu, and i'tall means to be sick, so he is 'alīl.

ولا أعلك الله أي لا أصابك بعلة

And may God not afflict you, meaning may God not strike you with an illness.

واعتل عليه بعلة واعتله إذا اعتاقه عن أمر

And he made an excuse to him with a pretext, and he hindered him if he prevented him from a matter.

والعلة: الحدث يشغل صاحبه عن حاجته

And al-'illah: an event that occupies its owner from his need.

ما علتي وأنا جلد نابل؟

What is my excuse, when I am strong and have weapons?

لا تعدم خرقاء علة

A clumsy woman will not lack an excuse.

المع لل: دافع جابي الخراج بالعلل

Al-mu'allil: one who deflects the tax collector with excuses.

وهذا علة لهذا أي سبب

And this is an 'illah for that, meaning a cause.

فكان عبد الرحمن يضرب رجلي بعلة الراحلة

So Abd al-Rahman would strike my leg because of the camel.

وإن ضربت على العلات، أجت ... أجيج الهقل من خيط النعام

And if you strike under all circumstances, it will produce the roaring of the camel from the camel's rope.

الجواد، على علاته، هرم

The generous person, under all circumstances, is old.

فكان عبد الرحمن يضرب رجلي بعلة الراحلة

So Abd al-Rahman would strike my leg because of the camel.

ولا تبعديني من جناك المعلل

And do not keep me away from your perfumed presence.

المعلل المعين بالبر بعد البر

Al-mu'allal: one who is helped with kindness after kindness.
