عضل عليه في أمره تعضيلا: ضيق من ذلك وحال بينه وبين ما يريد ظلما.

وعضل بهم المكان: ضاق.

وعضلت الأرض بأهلها إذا ضاقت بهم لكثرتهم؛

وعضلت المرأة بولدها تعضيلا إذا نشب الولد فخرج بعضه ولم يخرج بعض فبقي معترضا،
And a woman's labor became difficult with her child if the child got stuck and part of it emerged but not the rest, remaining transverse,
عسر عليها ولاده،
Her childbirth became difficult,
وإذا الأمور أهم غب نتاجها، ... يسرت كل معضل ومطرق
And when matters are difficult after their outcome, ... every difficult and stuck matter is made easy
المعصل، بالتشديد، السهم الذي يلتوي إذا رمي به؛
The twisted one (with emphasis), the arrow that twists when shot;
هو المعضل، بالضاد المعجمة، من عضلت الدجاجة إذا التوت البيضة في جوفها.
It is the difficult one, with the emphatic 'dhad', from a hen whose egg twisted in her belly.
والمعضلة أيضا: التي يعسر عليها ولدها حتى يموت؛

قد عضلها ولدها ،
Her child had caused her difficult childbirth,
أعضل بي الأمر إذا ضاقت عليك فيه الحيل.
The matter became difficult for me if stratagems became scarce for you in it.
وأعضله الأمر: غلبه.
And the matter overcame him: it defeated him.
داء عضال: شديد معي غالب؛
A severe, intractable disease: severe, overwhelming;
شفاها من الداء العضال الذي بها ... غلام، إذا هز القناة سقاها
He healed her from the severe disease she had ... a young man, when he shook the spear, he gave her water
أنزل بي القوم أمرا معضلا لا أقوم به ؛
The people brought upon me a difficult matter that I cannot handle;
وبها الداء العضال ؛
And in it is the severe disease;
هو المرض الذي يعجز الأطباء فلا دواء له.
It is the illness that physicians are unable to treat, for which there is no cure.
وتعضل الداء الأطباء وأعضلهم: غلبهم.
And the disease baffled the physicians and overcame them: it defeated them.
حلفة عضال: شديدة غير ذات مثنوية؛
A severe oath: strong and without retraction;
إني حلفت حلفة عضالا
Indeed, I swore a severe oath
فلان عضلة وعضل: شديد، داهية؛
So-and-so is strong and a formidable person: strong, a shrewd strategist;
فلان عضلة من العضل أي داهية من الدواهي.
So-and-so is a formidable person from the formidable ones, meaning a shrewd strategist among strategists.
والعضلة، بالضم: الداهية.
And 'al-'adalah, with damma, is: the calamity.

Something is difficult and severe: severely ugly;
عضلت الناقة تعضيلا وبددت تبديدا وهو الإعياء من المشي والركوب وكل عمل.
The she-camel became exhausted from walking, riding, and any work.
عضل بي الأمر وأعضل بي وأعضلني: اشتد وغلظ واستغلق.
The matter became difficult for me and severe and intractable.
أمر معضل: لا يهتدى لوجهه.

And 'al-mu'dilat': hardships.
أعضل بي أهل الكوفة، ما يرضون بأمير ولا يرضاهم أمير ؛
The people of Kufa have made things difficult for me, they are not satisfied with a ruler, nor is a ruler satisfied with them;
هو من العضال وهو الأمر الشديد الذي لا يقوم به صاحبه، أي ضاقت علي الحيل في أمرهم وصعبت علي مداراتهم.

قد أعضل الأمر، فهو معضل؛

واعضألت الشجرة: كثرت أغصانها واشتد التفافها؛
And the tree had many branches: its branches became numerous and intensely intertwined;
كأن زمامها أيم شجاع، ... ترأد في غصون معضئله
As if its reins were a brave woman, ... swaying in its intertwined branches
والعضل، بفتح الضاد والعين: الجرذ، والجمع عضلان.
And 'al-'adhal', with fatha on the dhad and 'ayn: the rat, and its plural is 'adhalan'.

العضل: موضع، وقيل: موضع بالبادية كثير الغياض.
Al-'Adhal: a place, and it is said: a place in the desert with many thickets.
عضل حي وبنو عضيلة: بطن.
Adhl is a tribe and Banu Adhilah is a clan.
عضل والديش حيان يقال لهما القارة وهم من كنانة.
Adhl and al-Dayish are two tribes called al-Qarah, and they are from Kinana.
وهو عضل بن الهون بن خزيمة أخو الديش، وهما القارة.
And he is Adhl ibn al-Hawn ibn Khuzaymah, brother of al-Dayish, and they are al-Qarah.
