تعازل القوم: انعزل بعضهم عن بعض.
The people separated from each other: some of them became separated from the others.
والعزلة: الانعزال نفسه، يقال: العزلة عبادة.
And 'al-'uzlah' is the separation itself; it is said: seclusion is worship.
وكنت بمعزل عن كذا وكذا أي كنت بموضع عزلة منه.
And I was far from such and such, meaning I was in a place of isolation from it.
واعتزلت القوم أي فارقتهم وتنحيت عنهم؛
And I separated myself from the people, meaning I left them and moved away from them;
ولست بجلب جلب ريح وقرة، ... ولا بصفا صلد عن الخير معزل
And I am not a bringer of wind and cold, ... nor am I a hard rock, separated from good.
وقوم من القدرية يلقبون المعتزلة؛ زعموا أنهم اعتزلوا فئتي الضلالة عندهم، يعنون أهل السنة والجماعة والخوارج الذين يستعرضون الناس قتلا.
And a group of the Qadariyya are nicknamed the Mu'tazila; they claimed that they separated themselves from the two deviant factions in their view, meaning the People of the Sunnah and the Community, and the Khawarij who kill people indiscriminately.
برئت من الخوارج لست منهم ... من العزال منهم وابن باب
I am free from the Khawarij, I am not among them... from the isolated ones among them and Ibn Bab.
وعزل عن المرأة واعتزلها: لم يرد ولدها.
And he separated from the woman and withdrew from her: he did not desire her offspring.
سأله رجل من الأنصار عن العزل يعني عزل الماء عن النساء حذر الحمل؛
A man from the Ansar asked him about 'al-'azl', meaning withdrawing the semen from the woman for fear of pregnancy;
العزل عزل الرجل الماء عن جاريته إذا جامعها لئلا تحمل.
'Al-'azl' is a man withdrawing his semen from his slave woman when he has intercourse with her, so that she does not become pregnant.
فإنها ما من نسمة كتب الله أن تخرج إلا وهي خارجة ؛
For there is no soul that Allah has decreed to come forth except that it will come forth;
من رواه لا عليكم أن لا تفعلوا فمعناه عند النحويين لا بأس عليكم أن لا تفعلوا، حذف منه بأس لمعرفة المخاطب به،
Whoever narrates it as 'You have no blame if you do not do it' means, according to the grammarians, 'There is no harm for you if you do not do it', with 'harm' omitted due to the familiarity of the addressee,
ومن رواه ما عليكم أن لا تفعلوا فمعناه أي شيء عليكم أن لا تفعلوا كأنه كره لهم العزل ولم يحرمه،
And whoever narrates it as 'What is upon you if you do not do it?' means, 'What is incumbent upon you if you do not do it?' as if it were disliked for them to practice 'al-'azl' but not forbidden,
أنه كان يكره عشر خلال منها عزل الماء لغير محله أي يعزله عن إقراره في فرج المرأة وهو محله،
That he disliked ten things, including withdrawing the semen from its proper place, meaning withdrawing it from its deposition in the woman's vagina, which is its proper place,
وفي قوله لغير محله تعريض بإتيان الدبر.
And in his saying 'from its proper place' is an allusion to anal intercourse.
اعزل عنك ما يشينك أي نحه عنك.
Remove from yourself what disgraces you, meaning push it away from you.
والمعزال: الذي ينزل ناحية من السفر ينزل وحده، وهو ذم عند العرب بهذا المعنى.
And 'al-mi'zal': one who descends to a side of a journey, descending alone; and this is a criticism among the Arabs in this sense.
وتلوي بلبون المعزابة المعزال
And it twists the udder of the solitary, isolated she-camel.
ويكون المعزال الذي يستبد برأيه في رعي أنف الكلإ ويتتبع مساقط الغيث ويعزب فيها، فيقال له معزابة ومعزال؛
And 'al-mi'zal' is one who makes independent decisions regarding grazing the best of the pasture, following the places of rain and staying there, so he is called 'mi'zabah' and 'mi'zal';
إذا الهدف المعزال صوب رأسه، ... وأعجبه ضفو من الثلة الخطل
When the heavy, solitary one lowers its head, ... and it likes the abundance from the scattered flock.
والهدف: الثقيل الوخم، والضفو: كثرة المال واتساعه، والجمع المعازيل؛
And 'al-hadaf': the heavy, sluggish one; and 'al-dafwa': abundance of wealth and its expansion; and the plural is 'al-ma'azil';
إذ أشرف الديك يدعو بعض أسرته، ... إلى الصباح، وهم قوم معازيل
When the rooster crows, calling some of his family... to the morning, and they are a group of the unarmed.
المعازيل هنا الذين لا سلاح معهم، وأراد بقوله وهم قوم الدجاج.
'Al-ma'azil' here means those who have no weapons with them, and by 'they are the people of the chickens' he meant the chickens themselves.
والأعزل: الرمل المنفرد المنقطع المنعزل.
And 'al-a'zal': the solitary, detached, separated sand dune.
والعزل في ذنب الدابة: أن يعزل ذنبه في أحد الجانبين، وذلك عادة لا خلقة وهو عيب.
And 'al-'azl' in an animal's tail: is for its tail to be deviated to one side, and this is by habit, not by nature, and it is a defect.
ودابة أعزل: مائل الذنب عن الدبر عادة لا خلقة، وقيل: هو الذي يعزل ذنبه في شق، وقد عزل عزلا،
And an 'a'zal' animal: is one whose tail deviates from the anus by habit, not by nature; and it is said: it is one whose tail is deviated into a cleft, and it has been deviated, 'azlan',
بضاف فويق الأرض ليس بأعزل
With a soft patch above the ground, not separated.
والكشف أن ترى ذنبه زائلا عن دبره وهو العزل.
And 'al-kashf' is to see its tail deviated from its anus, and that is 'al-'azl'.
اقرع عزل حمارك أي مؤخره.
Beat the rear end of your donkey, meaning its hindquarters.
والعزلة: الحرقفة.
And 'al-'uzlah': the hip bone.
والأعزل: الناقص إحدى الحرقفتين؛
And 'al-a'zal': one lacking one of the hip bones;
قد أعجلت ساقتها قرع العزل
Its herd has been hastened by the striking of the hip bones.
والأعزل: الذي لا سلاح معه فهو يعتزل الحرب؛
And 'al-a'zal': one who has no weapon with him, so he withdraws from war;
وأرى المدينة، حين كنت أميرها، ... أمن البريء بها ونام الأعزل
And I saw the city, when I was its governor, ... the innocent felt secure in it, and the unarmed slept.
سجراء نفسي غير جمع أشابة ... حشدا، ولا هلك المفارش عزل
My soul is safe from a gathering of mixed people... assembled, nor from the destruction of the unarmed.
غير ميل ولا عواوير في الهيجا، ... ولا عزل ولا أكفال
Not wavering nor retreating in battle, ... nor unarmed nor without support.
رآني رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، بالحديبية عزلا أي ليس معي سلاح.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saw me at Hudaybiyyah unarmed, meaning I had no weapon with me.
إذا كان الرجل أعزل فلا بأس أن يأخذ من سلاح الغنيمة.
If a man is unarmed, there is no harm in him taking from the spoils of war.
مساعير غير عزل ، بالتسكين؛

زالوا فما زال أنكاس ولا كشف، ... عند اللقاء، ولا ميل معازيل
They moved away, and they were not cowards nor exposed, ... at the encounter, nor wavering, nor unarmed.

And 'al-ma'azil' also: the people who have no spears with them;
ولكنكم حي معازيل حشوة، ... ولا يمنع الجيران باللوم والعذل
But you are a group of unarmed people, a burden, ... and you do not prevent neighbors from blame and reproach.
فهل هو إلا ثوبه وسلاحه؟ ... فما بكم عري إليه ولا عزل
Is it anything but his garment and his weapon? ... You have no nakedness towards it nor are you unarmed.
وقد جاءت له نظائر، وروي: ولا عزل، أراد ولا أنتم عزل، وقد يكون العزل لغة في العزل، كالشغل والشغل والبخل والبخل.
And examples of this have come for him, and it is narrated: 'wa la 'azal', meaning 'and you are not unarmed', and 'al-'azal' can be a variant pronunciation of 'al-'azl', like 'al-shughl' and 'al-shughl', and 'al-bukhl' and 'al-bukhl'.
فأما الأعزل فهو من منازل القمر به ينزل وهو شآم، وسمي أعزل لأنه لا شيء بين يديه من الكواكب كالأعزل الذي لا سلاح معه كما كان مع الرامح،
As for 'al-a'zal', it is one of the moon's stations where it descends, and it is in the north; it is named 'a'zal' because there is nothing before it among the stars, like one who is unarmed and has no weapon with him, as was the case with 'al-ramih' (the speared one),
ويقال: سمي أعزل لأنه إذا طلع لا يكون في أيامه ريح ولا برد؛
And it is said: it is named 'a'zal' because when it rises, there is no wind or cold during its days;
كأن قرون الشمس عند ارتفاعها، ... وقد صادفت قرنا، من النجم، أعزلا
As if the horns of the sun, when it rises high, ... and it has encountered a star, 'a'zal',
تردد فيه ضوؤها وشعاعها، ... فأحصن وأزين لامرئ إن تسربلا
Its light and rays reflect in it, ... making it more protected and beautiful for a man if he wears it.
محاهن صيب نوء الربيع، ... من الأنجم العزل والرامحه
The rain of the spring stars has erased them, ... from the unarmed and the speared stars.
رأيت الفتية الأعزال، ... مثل الأينق الرعل
I saw the young men, the unarmed, ... like the young female camels.
إنما الأعزال فيه جمع الأعزل؛ هكذا رواه علي بن حمزة، بالعين والزاي، والمعروف الأرعال.
'Al-a'zal' in it is the plural of 'al-a'zal'; this is how Ali bin Hamza narrated it, with 'ayn' and 'zayn', and the known word is 'al-ar'al'.
والعزال: الضعف.
And 'al-'uzal': weakness.
الأعزل من اللحم يكون نصيب الرجل الغائب، والجمع عزل.
'Al-a'zal' from meat is the portion of an absent man, and the plural is 'uzal'.
والعزل: ما يورده بيت المال تقدمة غير موزون ولا منتقد إلى محل النجم.
And 'al-'azl': what is brought to the treasury as an advance, not weighed or appraised, to the place of the star.
والعزلاء: مصب الماء من الراوية والقربة في أسفلها حيث يستفرغ ما فيها من الماء؛
And 'al-'azlaa': the outlet of water from the waterskin and the skin at its bottom, where its water is emptied;
سميت عزلاء لأنها في أحد خصمي المزادة لا في وسطها ولا هي كفمها الذي منه يستقى فيها، والجمع العزالي، بكسر اللام.
It is called 'azlaa' because it is on one side of the waterskin, not in the middle, nor is it like its mouth from which water is drawn into it; and the plural is 'al-'azali', with a kasra on the lam.
وأرسلت السماء عزاليها ، كثر مطرها على المثل،
And the sky sent forth its outlets, its rain was abundant, as the proverb goes,
يقال للسحابة إذا انهمرت بالمطر الجود: قد حلت عزاليها وأرسلت عزاليها؛
It is said of a cloud when it pours down abundant rain: it has opened its outlets and sent forth its outlets;
مرته الجنوب، فلما اكفهر ... حلت عزاليه الشمأل
The south wind passed over it, and when it became overcast... the north wind opened its outlets.
العزائل: أصله العزالي مثل الشائك والشاكي، والعزالي جمع العزلاء، وهو فم المزادة الأسفل، فشبه اتساع المطر واندفاقه بالذي يخرج من فم المزادة.
'Al-'aza'il': its origin is 'al-'azali', like 'al-sha'ik' and 'al-shaki'; and 'al-'azali' is the plural of 'al-'azlaa', which is the lower mouth of the waterskin, so the abundance and flow of rain is compared to what comes out of the waterskin's mouth.
كنا ننبذ لرسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، في سقاء له عزلاء.
We used to make Nabidh for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, in a waterskin that had an outlet.
والأعزل: سحاب لا مطر فيه.
And 'al-a'zal': a cloud without rain.
تروي الأجارع والأعازل كلها ... والنعف، حيث تقابل الأحجار
It waters all the lowlands and the isolated places... and the high ground, where the stones meet.
والأعزلان: واديان لبني كليب وبني العدوية، يقال لأحدهما الريان وللآخر الظمآن.
And 'al-a'zalan': two valleys belonging to Banu Kulayb and Banu al-'Adawiyya; one is called 'al-Rayyan' (the watered) and the other 'al-Zham'an' (the thirsty).
وعزله عن العمل أي نحاه فعزل.
And he dismissed him from work, meaning he removed him, so he was dismissed.
وعزله أي أفرزه.
And 'azalahu' means he separated him.
والمعزال: الضعيف الأحمق.
And 'al-mi'zal': the weak, foolish one.
والمعزال: الذي يعتزل أهل الميسر لؤما؛
And 'al-mi'zal': one who withdraws from the gamblers out of baseness;
عازلة عن كل خير تعزل، ... يابسة بطحاؤها تفلفل
'Azilah, from all good, it is separated, ... its dry plain is scattered.
للجن بين قارتيها أفكل، ... أقبل بالخير عليها مقبل
For the jinn between its two plateaus is a resting place, ... goodness approaches it, approaching.
