He said to 'Utbah ibn 'Abd: What is your name? He said: 'Atalah. He said: Rather, you are 'Utbah. It was said in its interpretation that he disliked 'Atalah because of its roughness and harshness, and it is an iron pillar used to demolish walls, and it was said: a large iron tool used to uproot trees and stones.
وفي حديث هدم الكعبة: فأخذ ابن مطيع العتلة ؛ ومنه اشتق العتل، وهو الشديد الجافي والفظ الغليظ من الناس.
And in the hadith about demolishing the Ka'bah: Ibn Mutī' took the 'atlah; from this is derived 'al-'atl, which is the strong, coarse, and rough person.
والعتل: الشديد، وقيل: الأكول المنوع، وقيل: هو الجافي الغليظ، وقيل: هو الجافي الخلق اللئيم الضريبة، وقيل: هو الشديد من الرجال والدواب.
And 'al-'atl: the strong, and it was said: the gluttonous and varied eater, and it was said: he is the coarse and rough one, and it was said: he is the coarse-natured, ignoble one, and it was said: he is the strong one among men and beasts.

And 'al-'atlah: the singular of 'al-'utal', which are the Persian bows; Umayyah said: They shoot from 'utal' as if they were swift... with a whizzing sound, hastening the projectile.
فانعتل: جره جرا عنيفا وجذبه فحمله.
So he was dragged: he dragged him with a violent dragging and pulled him, carrying him.

And in the Revelation: Take him and drag him to the midst of Hellfire; 'Āṣim, Ḥamzah, Al-Kisā'ī, and Abū 'Amr recited 'fa'tloohu' (with kasrah on the tā'), and Ibn Kathīr, Nāfi', Ibn 'Āmir, and Ya'qūb recited 'fa'taloohu' (with ḍammah on the tā'); Al-Azhari said: They are two eloquent languages, and their meaning is: Take him and break him as firewood is broken.

And a strong man, with kasrah: capable of that; Abū Al-Najm said, describing a horse: Dust flew from the colt as it was born... from broad shoulders, a free horse that was strong, we make it strong and we do not make it weak.
وإنما لعتل إلى الشر أي سريع.
And indeed he is swift to evil, meaning quick.
وعتل إلى الشر عتلا، فهو عتل: سرع؛ قال: وعتل داويته من العتل
And he hastened to evil with hastening, so he is swift; he said: And he hastened to treat him from the hastening.
