It is said: 'I bought a shumlah (cloak) that covers me.'
وقد تشمل بها تشملا وتشميلا
And one may wrap oneself with it, 'tashammulan' and 'tashmeelan'.
وما كان ذا مشمل ولقد أشمل أي صارت له مشملة
And he who possessed a 'mushmil' (cloak) and indeed he acquired a 'mushmil', meaning he came to possess one.
وأشمله: أعطاه مشملة
'Ashmalahu': He gave him a 'mushmalah' (cloak).
وشمله شملا وشمولا: غطى عليه المشملة
'Shamalahu shamlan wa shumulan': He covered him with the 'mushmalah' (cloak).
وهذه شملة تشملك أي تسعك كما يقال: فراش يفرشك
And this 'shumlah' (cloak) 'tashmuluk' (encompasses you), meaning it suffices you, just as it is said: 'a mattress that suffices you'.
فإذا لفق لفقين فهي مشملة يشتمل بها الرجل إذا نام بالليل
And if two pieces are sewn together, it is a 'mushmalah' (cloak) with which a man wraps himself when he sleeps at night.
إن أبا هذا كان ينسج الشمال بيمينه
The father of this man used to weave 'ash-shimal' (cloaks) with his right hand.
وهو افتعال من الشملة، وهو كساء يتغطى به ويتلفف فيه
And it is an 'ifti'aal' (verbal noun) from 'ash-shumlah', which is a garment one covers oneself with and wraps in.
يقال اشتمل على ناقة فذهب بها أي ركبها وذهب بها
It is said: 'He 'ishtamala' (mounted) a she-camel and went off with it,' meaning he rode it and went off with it.
والرحم تشتمل على الولد إذا تضمنته
And the womb 'tashtamilu' (encompasses) the child when it contains it.
والشمول: الخمر لأنها تشمل بريحها الناس
And 'ash-shumool' (wine): because it 'tashmulu' (encompasses) people with its scent.
والشمال: خليقة الرجل، وجمعها شمائل

And we missed its downpour and heavy rain, meaning a small amount of it reached us.
وذهب القوم شماليل: تفرقوا فرقا
And the people went 'shamaaleel': they dispersed in groups.
والشمال: كل قبضة من الزرع يقبض عليها الحاصد
And 'ash-shamaal': every handful of crops that the harvester grasps.
أشمل الفحل شوله إشمالا: ألقح النصف منها إلى الثلثين
'Ashmala' al-fahl shawlahu 'ishmaalan': he impregnated half to two-thirds of them.
ودخل في شملها وشملها أي غمارها
And he entered into its 'shamliha' and 'shamliha', meaning its midst or depth.
يقال: جمع الله شملك
It is said: 'May Allah gather your 'shaml' (union).'
أسألك رحمة تجمع بها شملي
I ask You for mercy with which You gather my 'shaml' (scattered affairs).
وفرق الله شمله أي ما اجتمع من أمره
And may Allah scatter his 'shaml' (united affairs), meaning what had gathered of his matter.
ونحن في شملكم أي كنفكم
And we are in your 'shamlikum' (protection/care), meaning under your shelter.

And 'inshamala' the thing: it was like 'inshamara' (hastened).

And a she-camel 'shamlah' (with shadda), 'shamaal', 'shamlaal', and 'shamleel': light, fast, and energetic.
وقد شملل شمللة إذا أسرع
And he 'shamllala' a 'shamllalah' if he hastened.
وطأطأ فلان فرسه إذا حثها بساقيه
And so-and-so 'tawta'a' (urged) his horse if he urged it with his legs.
وأبو عمرو: أراد بقوله أطأطئ شملالي يده الشمال، والشمال والشملال واحد
And Abu Amr said: By his saying 'atawti'u shamlaali', he meant his left hand, and 'ash-shamaal' and 'ash-shamlaal' are the same.
وجمل شمل وشملال وشمليل: سريع
And a camel 'shamal', 'shamlaal', and 'shamleel': fast.
وأم شملة: كنية الدنيا، عن ابن الأعرابي
And 'Umm Shamlah': a kunya (nickname) for the world, from Ibn Al-A'rabi.
