وجراد مشعل: كثير متفرق إذا انتشر وجرى في كل وجه
And musha'il locusts: numerous and scattered when they spread out and move in every direction.
وأما قولهم جاء جيش كالجراد المشعل، وهو الذي يخرج في كل وجه، وأما قولهم جاء فلان كالحريق المشعل، فمفتوحة العين، لأنه من أشعل النار في الحطب أي أضرمها
As for their saying 'an army came like musha'il locusts,' it is one that moves in every direction. As for their saying 'so-and-so came like a musha'al fire,' the 'ayn is fathah, because it is from ash'ala al-nar fi al-hatab, meaning he ignited it.
وأشعلت جمعه إذا فرقته
And he ash'ala his gathering if he dispersed it.
والشعلول: الفرقة من الناس وغيرهم
And al-sha'lul: a division or group of people and others.
وذهبوا شعاليل مثل شعارير إذا تفرقوا
And they went off sha'alil like sha'arir if they dispersed.
