قال أبو عبيد: الأسمال الأخلاق، الواحد منه سمل

Abu Ubaid said: Al-asmaal are the worn-out things, the singular of which is سمل (samal).

وثوب أخلاق إذا أخلق، وثوب أسمال كما يقال رمح أقصاد وبرمة أعشار

And a garment is 'akhlaaq' if it becomes worn out, and a garment is 'asmaal', just as one says a 'qasad' spear and a 'a'shaar' pot.

And asmaal from Abu Amr; and he recited: 'He leaves the remnants of the basins dry.'

والسملة، بالضم، مثل السملة

And as-samlah, with dammah, is like as-samlah.

ابن سيده: السملة بقية الماء في الحوض؛ وقيل: هو ما فيه من الحمأة، والجمع سمل وسمال

Ibn Sidah said: As-samlah is the remainder of water in the basin; and it was said: it is what is in it of sediment, and its plural is سمل (samal) and سمّال (simaal).

فأوردها، فيح نجم الفروع ... من صيهد الصيف، برد السمال

So he brought them to water, in the expanse of the branches... from the heat of summer, the coolness of the remaining water.

And as-simaal is pluralized into samaa'il; Ru'bah said: 'With dust clouds that dry up the remaining water.'

And it (as-samlah) is, with harakah, the small amount of water that remains at the bottom of a container.

And at-tasammul: drinking the samlah or taking it, it is said 'I left him drinking a samlah of drink or other things.'

And he سمل (samala) the basin, سملًا (samlan), and أسمله (asmalahu): he cleaned it of the samlah.

وسمل الحوض: لم يخرج منه إلا ماء قليل؛ عن اللحياني؛ وأنشد: أصبح حوضاك لمن يراهما ... مسملين، ماصعا قراهما

And the basin سمل (samala): nothing but a little water came out of it; from Al-Lihyani; and he recited: 'Your two basins have become, for whoever sees them... with little water, their edges are dry.'

وسملت الدلو: خرج ماؤها قليلا

And the bucket سملت (samalat): its water came out little by little.

وسملان الماء والنبيذ: بقاياهما

And samalaan of water and wine: their remnants.

وتسمل النبيذ: ألح في شربه؛ كلاهما عنه أيضا

And tasammul of wine: to insist on drinking it; both are from him also.

والسمال: الدود الذي يكون في الماء الناقع؛ قال تميم بن مقبل: كأن سخالها، بذوي سحار ... إلى الخرماء، أولاد السمال

And as-simaal: the worms that are in stagnant water; Tamim ibn Al-Muqbil said: 'As if their young, in Dhu Suhar... to Al-Kharmaa, were the young of the simaal.'

وسمل بينهم يسمل سملا وأسمل بينهم: أصلح بينهم

And he سمل (samala) between them, سملًا (samlan), and أسمل (asmala) between them: he reformed between them.

وإن يأود الأمر يلقوا له ... ثقافا، وإن يحكموا يعدلوا وتنأى قعودهم في الأمور ... عمن يسم، ومن يسمل

And if the matter becomes difficult, they find for it... a solution, and if they judge, they are just. And their positions in matters are distant... from him who probes, and him who reforms.

ولكني رائب صدعهم، ... رقوء لما بينهم مسمل

But I am observing their rift, ... a healer for what is between them, a reformer.

والسامل: الساعي لإصلاح المعيشة، وفي الصحاح: في إصلاح معاشه

And as-saamil: the one striving for the improvement of livelihood, and in As-Sihaah: for the improvement of his living.

وسمل العين: فقؤها، يقال: سملت عينه تسمل إذا فقئت بحديدة محماة، وفي المحكم: سمل عينه يسملها سملا واستملها فقأها

And samal al-'ayn: plucking out its eye, it is said: 'His eye became blind, yasmalu, if it was plucked out with a heated iron', and in Al-Muhkam: 'He سمل (samala) his eye, yasmaluha, samlan, and astamalaha: he plucked it out.'

وفي حديث العرنيين الذين ارتدوا عن الإسلام: أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أمر بسمل أعينهم

And in the narration of the 'Araniyyin who apostatized from Islam: 'The Prophet, peace be upon him, ordered the blinding of their eyes.'

قال أبو عبيد: السمل أن تفقأ العين بحديدة محماة أو بغير ذلك، قال: وقد يكون السمل فقأها بالشوك، وهو بمعنى السمر، وإنما فعل ذلك بهم لأنهم فعلوا بالرعاة مثله وقتلوهم فجازاهم على صنيعهم بمثله، وقيل: إن هذا كان قبل أن تنزل الحدود فلما نزلت نهى عن المثلة؛ وقال أبو ذؤيب يرثي بنين له ماتوا: فالعين بعدهم كأن حداقها ... سملت بشوك، فهي عور تدمع

Abu Ubaid said: As-samal is to pluck out the eye with a heated iron or otherwise, he said: 'And as-samal can be plucking it out with thorns, which is similar to piercing. He only did that to them because they did the same to the shepherds and killed them, so he retaliated against them for their deed with the like. It was said that this was before the legal punishments were revealed, and when they were revealed, mutilation was forbidden.' Abu Dhu'ayb said, mourning his sons who died: 'And the eye after them, as if its pupils... were blinded with thorns, so it is blind and tearful.'

ولطم رجل من العرب رجلا ففقأ عينه فسمي سمالا؛ حكى الجوهري قال: قال أعرابي فقأ جدنا عين رجل فسمينا بني سمال

And a man from the Arabs struck a man and plucked out his eye, so he was named Sammaala; Al-Jawhari narrated, he said: 'An Arab said, our grandfather plucked out a man's eye, so we named our children Banee Sammaal.'

والسمال: شجر، يمانية

And as-simaal: trees, Yemeni.

والسوملة: فيالجة صغيرة، وفي المحكم: فنجانة صغيرة

And as-sawmalah: a small vial, and in Al-Muhkam: a small flask.

ومكان سمول: سهل التراب، وقيل: هي الأرض الواسعة، وقيل: هو الجوف الواسع من الأرض؛ عن أبي عبيدة؛ قال امرؤ القيس: أثرن غبارا بالكديد السمول

And a place samool: easy soil, and it was said: it is the vast land, and it was said: it is the wide hollow of the earth; from Abu Ubaidah; Imru' al-Qais said: 'They stirred up dust in the soft, yielding ground.'

وسمويل: طائر، وقيل بلدة كثيرة الطير؛ قال الربيع بن زياد: وفي المحكم قال الربيع الكامل أحد أخوال لبيد بن ربيعة يخاطب النعمان: لئن رحلت جمالي لا إلى سعة، ... ما مثلها سعة عرضا ولا طولا بحيث لو وزنت لخم بأجمعها، ... لم يعدلوا ريشة من ريش سمويلا ترعى الروائم أحرار البقول بها، ... لا مثل رعيكم ملحا وغسويلا

And Summayl: a bird, and it was said a town rich in birds; Ar-Rabi' ibn Ziyad said: And in Al-Muhkam, Ar-Rabi' al-Kamil, one of the maternal uncles of Labid ibn Rabi'ah, said addressing An-Nu'man: 'If my camels travel, not to a wide place, ... there is nothing like it in width or length. So that if all of Lakhum were weighed, ... they would not equal a feather from the feather of Summayl. The grazing animals feed on the choice herbs there, ... not like your grazing on salt and ghusweel.'

والغسويل: نبت ينبت في السباخ، وأبو السمال العدوي: رجل من الأعراب

And al-ghusweel: a plant that grows in saline soil, and Abu As-Simmaal Al-'Adawi: a man from the Bedouins.

وأبو سمال: كنية رجل من بني أسد

And Abu Sammaal: a kunyah of a man from Banu Asad.

أبو زيد: السملة جوع يأخذ الإنسان فيأخذه لذلك وجع في عينيه فتهراق عيناه دمعا فيدعى ذلك السملة، كأنه يفقأ العين

Abu Zayd said: As-samlah is hunger that overcomes a person, causing pain in his eyes, so his eyes water, and that is called as-samlah, as if it were plucking out the eye.

والسوملة: الطرجهارة، والحوجلة القارورة الكبيرة. قال: ويقال حوجلة ودوخلة

And as-sawmalah: the large flask, and al-haujalah the large bottle. He said: And it is also called haujalah and dawkhalah.
