الرمل: نوع معروف من التراب، وجمعه الرمال، والقطعة منها رملة
Sand: a well-known type of earth, its plural is 'al-rimal', and a piece of it is 'ramlah'.
وبه سميت المرأة، وهي الرمال والأرمل
And by it, the woman was named; she is 'al-rimal' and 'al-armal'.
ورمل الطعام: جعل فيه الرمل
And 'ramala' al-ta'am: to put sand in it.
أمر أن تكفأ القدور وأن يرمل اللحم بالتراب أي يلت بالتراب لئلا ينتفع به
He ordered that the pots be overturned and the meat be smeared with earth, meaning it be coated with earth so it could not be benefited from.
ورمل الثوب ونحوه: لطخه بالدم
And 'ramala' a garment and the like: to smear it with blood.
ويقال: أرمل السهم إرمالا إذا أصابه الدم فبقي أثره
And it is said: the arrow 'armala' its 'irmalan' if blood hit it and its trace remained.
محمرة الريش على ارتمالها
Red-feathered upon its being smeared with blood.
ويقال: رمل فلان بالدم وضمخ بالدم وضرج بالدم كله إذا لطخ به، وقد ترمل بدمه
And it is said: So-and-so 'ramala' with blood, and 'damakha' with blood, and 'daraja' with blood, all meaning to smear it with it, and he became smeared with his blood ('tarammala').
رمله بالدم فترمل وارتمل أي تلطخ
He smeared him with blood, so he became smeared ('tarammala') and smeared ('irtamala'), meaning he was stained.
إن بني رملوني بالدم
Indeed, my kin smeared me with blood.
ورمل النسج يرمله رملا ورمله وأرمله: رققه
And 'ramala' the weaving, he 'yarmiluhu' 'ramlan', and 'rammaluhu' and 'armaluhu': to make it thin.
ورمل السرير والحصير يرمله رملا: زينه بالجوهر ونحوه
And 'ramala' the bed and the mat, he 'yarmiluhu' 'ramlan': to decorate it with jewels and the like.
فهو مرمول ومرمل إذا نسجته وسففته
So it is 'marmool' and 'murammal' if you weave it and apply it.
أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، كان مضطجعا على رمال سرير قد أثر في جنبه
That the Prophet, peace be upon him, was lying on the woven material of a bed that had left a mark on his side.
وكأن صفحته حصير مرمل
And as if its surface was a decorated mat.
وإذا هو جالس على رمال سرير
And behold, he was sitting on the woven material of a bed.
الرمال: ما رمل أي نسج
Al-rimal: what is woven, meaning 'nusija'.
والمراد أنه كان السرير قد نسج وجهه بالسعف ولم يكن على السرير وطاء سوى الحصير
And what is meant is that the bed's surface was woven with palm fronds, and there was no bedding on the bed other than the mat.
والروامل: نواسج الحصير، الواحدة راملة، وقد أرمله
And 'al-rawamil': the weavers of the mat, the singular is 'ramilah', and she has 'armalathu'.
كأن نسج العنكبوت المرمل
Like the woven material of the decorated spiderweb.
وقد رمل سريره وأرمله إذا رمل شريطا أو غيره فجعله ظهرا له
And he 'ramala' his bed and 'armalathu' it if he wove a strip or something else and made it its back.
ويقال: خبيص مرمل إذا عصد عصدا شديدا حتى صارت فيه طرائق موضونة
And it is said: 'khabeese' is 'murammal' if it is kneaded intensely until layered patterns are formed in it.
وطعام مرمل إذا ألقي فيه الرمل
And food is 'murammal' if sand is thrown into it.
والرمل، بالتحريك: الهرولة
And 'al-raml', with harakah: the light trot.
ورمل يرمل رملا: وهو دون المشي وفوق العدو
And he 'ramala' he 'yarmilu' 'ramlan': which is less than walking and more than running.
ورمل يرمل رملانا ورملا إذا أسرع في مشيته وهز منكبيه، وهو في ذلك لا ينزو
And a man 'yarmilu' he 'yarmilu' 'ramalanaan' and 'ramlan' if he quickens his walk and sways his shoulders, without leaping.
والطائف بالبيت يرمل رملانا اقتداء بالنبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، وبأصحابه، وذلك بأنهم رملوا ليعلم أهل مكة أن بهم قوة
And the one circumambulating the House 'yarmilu' 'ramalanaan' in emulation of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his companions, and that is because they 'ramaloo' to let the people of Mecca know they had strength.
ناقته ترمل في النقال
His she-camel 'tarmilu' in the 'naqal'.
ورملت بين الصفا والمروة رملا ورملانا
And she 'ramalat' between Safa and Marwah 'ramlan' and 'ramalanaan'.
رمل ثلاثا ومشى أربعا
He trotted three times and walked four times.
فيم الرملان والكشف عن المناكب وقد أطأ الله الإسلام؟
What is the meaning of 'al-ramalan' and uncovering the shoulders, now that God has established Islam?
والرمل: ضرب من عروض يجيء على فاعلاتن فاعلاتن
And 'al-ramal': a type of meter that comes on 'fa'ilatun fa'ilatun'.
لا يغلب النازع ما دام الرمل
The drawer will not be overcome as long as the meter is 'al-ramal'.
الرمل من الشعر كل شعر مهزول غير مؤتلف البناء
'Al-ramal' of poetry is any weak poetry whose structure is not coherent.
وأرمل القوم: نفد زادهم
And the people 'armaloo': their provisions ran out.
وأرملوه أنفدوه
And they 'armaloohu': they exhausted it.
إذا أرملوا زادا، عقرت مطية
When they ran out of provisions, I slaughtered a mount.
وكان القوم مرملين مسنتين
And the people were destitute and in a year of drought.
كنا مع رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، في غزاة فأرملنا وأنفضنا
We were with the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, on an expedition, and we ran out of provisions ('armalna') and became scattered ('anfadhna').
أي نفد زادهم
Meaning their provisions ran out.
وهم الأرملة والأرامل والأراملة، كسروه تكسير الأسماء لقلته
And they are 'al-armalah', 'al-aramil', and 'al-aramilah', they broke it like nouns due to its scarcity.
وكل جماعة من رجال ونساء أو رجال دون نساء أو نساء دون رجال أرملة، بعد أن يكونوا محتاجين
And every group of men and women, or men without women, or women without men is 'armalah', after they are needy.
ويقال للفقير الذي لا يقدر على شيء من رجل أو امرأة أرملة، ولا يقال للمرأة التي لا زوج لها وهي موسرة أرملة
And the poor person who cannot afford anything, male or female, is called 'armalah', but a woman who has no husband and is wealthy is not called 'armalah'.
وجاءت أرملة من نساء ورجال محتاجين
And a group of needy women and men came.
ويقال للرجال المحتاجين الضعفاء أرملة، وإن لم يكن فيهم نساء
And needy, weak men are called 'armalah', even if there are no women among them.
فهو للرجال والنساء، لأن الأرامل يقع على الذكور والنساء
So it is for men and women, because 'al-aramil' applies to males and females.
ثمال اليتامى عصمة للأرامل
The helper of orphans, the protection of the needy.
الأرامل المساكين من نساء ورجال
Al-aramil: the needy among women and men.
وهو بالنساء أخص وأكثر استعمالا
And it is more specific to and more commonly used for women.
والأرمل: الذي ماتت زوجته، والأرملة التي مات زوجها، وسواء كانا غنيين أو فقيرين
And 'al-armal': he whose wife has died, and 'al-armalah': she whose husband has died, whether they are rich or poor.
وإنهم لأرملة ما يحملونه إلا ما استفقروا له، يعني العارية
And they are 'armalah' in what they carry except what they borrow, meaning a loan.
يعني أنهم قوم لا يملكون الإبل ولا يقدرون على الارتحال إلا على إبل يستعيرونها
Meaning they are a people who do not own camels and cannot travel except on borrowed camels.
ويقال للذكر أرمل إذا كان لا امرأة له، تقوله العرب، وكذلك رجل أيم وامرأة إيمة
And a male is called 'armal' if he has no wife, the Arabs say this, as well as 'ayyam' for a man and 'ayyimah' for a woman.
أحب أن أصطاد ضبا سحبلا، ... رعى الربيع والشتاء أرملا
I wish to hunt a swift lizard, ... that grazed in spring and winter as a male without a female.
قلما يستعمل الأرمل في المذكر إلا على التشبيه والمغالطة
The term 'al-armal' is rarely used for a male except by analogy or metaphor.
كل الأرامل قد قضيت حاجتها، ... فمن لحاجة هذا الأرمل الذكر؟
All the widows have had their needs met, ... so who will attend to the need of this widowed man?
امرأة أرملة: لا زوج لها
A woman 'armalah': she has no husband.
ليبك على ملحان ضيف مدفع، ... وأرملة تزجي مع الليل أرملا
Let him weep for the two streams of a repelled guest, ... and a widow guiding a 'armalan' through the night.
بذي فخر تأوي إليه الأرامل
In a place of pride to which the needy resort.
أراد ضبا لا أنثى له ليكون سمينا
He meant a lizard that has no female so it would be fat.
وأرملت المرأة إذا مات عنها زوجها، وأرملت: صارت أرملة
And the woman became 'armalat' if her husband died, and she became 'armalat': she became a widow.
رملت المرأة من زوجها وهي أرملة
The woman became widowed ('ramalat') from her husband and she is a widow ('armalah').
الأرملة التي مات عنها زوجها؛ سميت أرملة لذهاب زادها وفقدها كاسبها ومن كان عيشها صالحا به
Al-armalah: she whose husband has died; she is named 'armalah' because her provisions are gone and she has lost her provider by whom her life was made good.
ولا يقال له إذا ماتت امرأته أرمل إلا في شذوذ، لأن الرجل لا يذهب زاده بموت امرأته إذا لم تكن قيمة عليه والرجل قيم عليها وتلزمه عيلولتها ومؤنتها ولا يلزمها شيء من ذلك
And he is not called 'armal' if his wife dies except in rare cases, because a man's provisions do not disappear with his wife's death if she was not his provider, while the man is her provider and is responsible for her upkeep and expenses, and she is not responsible for any of that.
ورد على القتيبي قوله فيمن أوصى بماله للأرامل أنه يعطي منه الرجال الذين مات أزواجهم، لأنه يقال رجل أرمل وامرأة أرملة
And Al-Qutaybi's statement was responded to regarding one who bequeaths his wealth to 'al-aramal' that it should be given to men whose husbands have died, because a man is called 'armal' and a woman is called 'armalah'.
وهذا مثل الوصية للجواري لا يعطى منه الغلمان ووصية الغلمان لا يعطى منه الجواري، وإن كان يقال للجارية غلامة
And this is like a bequest to female slaves, from which male slaves are not given, and a bequest to male slaves is not given to female slaves, even though a female slave may be called 'ghulamah'.
والمرمل: القيد الصغير
And 'al-murammal': the small shackle.
والرمل: المطر الضعيف؛ وفي الصحاح: القليل من المطر
And 'al-raml': the weak rain; and in Al-Sihah: a little rain.
وعام أرمل: قليل المطر والنفع والخير، وسنة رملاء كذلك
And a year 'armal': little rain, benefit, and good, and a year 'ramlaa' is similar.
وأصابهم رمل من مطر أي قليل، والجمع أرمال
And they were struck by 'raml' of rain, meaning a little, and the plural is 'armal'.
وأرامل العرفج: أصوله
And 'aramil' of 'urfuj: its roots.
وأرمولة العرفج: جذموره، وجمعها أراميل
And 'armoolat' of 'urfuj: its rootstock, and its plural is 'aramil'.
قيد في أرامل العرافج، في أرض سوء جذبة هجاهج
A shackle in the roots of the 'urfuj, in a bad, dry, barren land.
والرمل: خطوط في يدي البقرة الوحشية ورجليها يخالف سائر لونها، وقيل: الرملة الخط الأسود
And 'al-raml': lines on the forelegs and hindlegs of the wild cow that differ from the rest of its color, and it is said: 'al-ramlah' is the black line.
يقال لوشي قوائم الثور الوحشي رمل، واحدتها رملة
The markings on the legs of the wild bull are called 'raml', the singular of which is 'ramlah'.
كأنها، بعد ما جد النجاء بها ... بالشيطين، مهاة سرولت رملا
As if she, after the pursuit intensified with the two devils, was a gazelle adorned with markings.
ويقال للضبع أم رمال
And the hyena is called 'Umm Rimal'.
ورملة: مدينة بالشام
And Ramlah: a city in the Levant.
والأرمل: الأبلق
And 'al-armal': the piebald.
الأرمل من الشاء الذي اسودت قوائمه كلها
'Al-armal' from sheep is that whose legs have all turned black.
الرمل، بضم الراء وفتح الميم، خطوط سود تكون على ظهر الغزال وأفخاذه
'Al-raml', with dammah on the raa and fatha on the mim, are black lines that are on the back and thighs of the gazelle.
ونعجة رملاء: سوداء القوائم كلها وسائرها أبيض
And a sheep 'ramlaa': all its legs are black and the rest of it is white.
وغلام أرمولة: كقولك بالفارسية زاذه
And a boy 'armoolah': like you say in Persian 'zadhah'.
