And al-rafl: the tail.

ورفل إزاره إذا أسبله وتبختر فيه؛ ومنه حديث أبي جهل: يرفل في الناس ، ويروى يزول ، بالزاي والواو، أي كثر الحركة ولا يستقر

And he raflt his loincloth when he let it down and swaggered in it; and from this is the hadith of Abu Jahl: he raflt among the people, and it is narrated yazuul, with zay and waw, meaning he moved much and did not settle.

وإنما سمي مرفلا لأنه وسع فصار بمنزلة الثوب الذي يرفل فيه

وشعر رفال: طويل؛ قال الشاعر بفاحم منسدل رفال

And rafal hair: long; the poet said with black, flowing, long hair.

قال: وأما قول الشاعر: ترفل المرافلا فمعناه تمشي كل ضرب من الرفل

He said: As for the poet's saying: tarfal al-marafila, it means walking with every kind of swagger.

وفرس رفل: طويل الذنب، وكذلك البعير والوعل؛ قال الجعدي: فعرفنا هزة تأخذه، ... فقرناه برضراض رفل

And a rafil horse: long-tailed, and so is the camel and the ibex; Al-Ja'di said: So we knew a tremor that took him, ... and we matched him with a rough, long-tailed rock.

And rafn is a dialectal variant, and it is said its nun is a substitute for the lam of rafl; Ibn Miyadah said: They follow the weaving of a curly-haired, rafl descendant, ... as if where the place meets him, from its sides, are 'alani and ibexes.

وقال: الرفل والرفن من الخيل جميعا الكثير اللحم

And he said: Al-rafl and al-rafn among horses both mean having much flesh.

وبعير رفل: واسع الجلد، وقد يكون الطويل الذنب يوصف به على الوجهين؛ وأنشد لرؤبة: جعد الدرانيك، رفل الأجلاد، ... كأنه مختضب في أجساد

And a rafil camel: wide-skinned, and the long-tailed one can be described in both ways; and Ru'bah recited: curly-maned, wide-skinned, ... as if it were dyed on its bodies.

ورفلت الرجل إذا عظمته وملكته؛ قال ذو الرمة: إذا نحن رفلنا امرأ ساد قومه، ... وإن لم يكن، من قبل ذلك، يذكر

And I raflt the man if I made him great and ruled him; Dhu Al-Rummah said: When we made a man great, he led his people, ... even if he was not, before that, mentioned.

وفي حديث وائل بن حجر: يسعى ويترفل على الأقوال أي يتسود ويترأس استعارة من ترفيل الثوب وهو إسباغه وإسباله؛ قال شمر: الترفل التسود، والترفيل التسويد

And in the hadith of Wa'il ibn Hujr: he strives and swaggered over the sayings, meaning he became a leader and a chief, a metaphor from tarfil of the garment, which is its lengthening and trailing; Shammir said: Al-tarfal is becoming a leader, and al-tarfil is making a leader.

ورفل فلان إذا سود على قومه، وقيل: رفلت الرجل ذللته وملكته

And so-and-so raflt if he became a leader over his people, and it was said: I raflt the man, I made him submissive and ruled him.
