As for the rahala, it is larger than the sarj, covered with hides, and is for horses and swift camels.
فتروا النجائب عند ذلك ... بالرحال وبالرحائل
So they tethered the swift camels at that time... with the rahals and the rahail.
إذ لا أزال على رحالة سابح ... نهد مراكله، نبيل المحزم
as if I am always on the saddle of a swift-swimming (horse)... its saddle-straps strong, its girth noble.
والرحل في غير هذا: منزل الرجل ومسكنه وبيته
And the rahl, in other contexts: is a man's stopping place, his dwelling, and his home.
دخلت على الرجل رحله أي منزله
I entered upon the man's rahl, meaning his dwelling.
إنكم ترون ما أرى من أصفر «4» وأحمر وفي الرحال ما فيها فاتقوا الله ولا تخزوا الحور العين
You see what I see of yellow and red, and among the dwellings are what they are; so fear Allah and do not shame the dark-eyed maidens.
وانتهينا إلى رحالنا أي منازلنا
And we arrived at our rihal, meaning our dwellings.
وفي الحديث : إذا ابتلت النعال فالصلاة في الرحال أي صلوا ركبانا
And in the Hadith: If the sandals become wet, then pray in the rihal, meaning pray riding.
وضعا رحالهما، يعني رحلي الراحلتين
they placed their rahalehuma, meaning the rahaleys of the two riding camels.
والرحالة في أشعار العرب السرج
And the rahala in the poetry of the Arabs is the saddle.
وشعث على أكتافهن الرحائل
and disheveled ones on whose shoulders are the rahail.
والرحالة سرج من جلود ليس فيه خشب كانوا يتخذونه للركض الشديد
And the rahala is a saddle made of hides without wood, which they used for intense running.
تعدو به خوصاء يفصم جريها ... حلق الرحالة، وهي رخو [رخو] تمزع
A lean she-camel runs with it, its running tearing... the strap-rings of the rahala, which are loose and tear.
والرحل رحل البعير، وهو أصغر من القتب
And the rahl is the camel's riding gear, and it is smaller than the qatab.
والعرب تكني عن القذف للرجل بقولهم: يا ابن ملقى أرحل الركبان
And the Arabs use a euphemism for accusation against a man by saying: O son of one who drops the riders' gear.

Sumayya prepared her camels for travel one morning.
إذا ما قمت أرحلها بليل، ... تأوه آهة الرجل الحزين
When I stand to prepare its riding gear at night, ... it moans with the moan of a sad man.
إن ابني ارتحلني فكرهت أن أعجله
My son rode on me, and I disliked hurrying him.
وإنه لحسن الرحلة أي الرحل للإبل أعني شده لرحالها
And he is good at preparing the camel, meaning tightening its riding gear.
إنما هو رحل أو سرج، فرحل إلى بيت الله، وسرج في سبيل الله
It is either a rahl or a sarj; so prepare for the House of Allah, and ride for the sake of Allah.
رحلت البعير أرحله رحلا إذا علوته
I prepared the camel for travel, I loaded it with rahl, when I mounted it.

You ride a camel if you mount it with a saddle or a pack-saddle.

Meaning he rides the matter, he takes it upon himself.
ولو أن رجلا صرع آخر وقعد على ظهره لقلت رأيته مرتحله
And if a man knocked another down and sat on his back, I would say I saw him riding him.
لأرحلنك بسيفي أي لأعلونك
I will ride you with my sword, meaning I will mount you.
تخرج نار من قعر عدن ترحل الناس
A fire will emerge from the bottom of Aden, it will move people.
ومعنى ترحل أي ترحل معهم إذا رحلوا، وتنزل معهم إذا نزلوا
And the meaning of 'turahhil' is that it travels with them when they travel, and it descends with them when they descend.
وقيل معنى ترحلهم أي تنزلهم المراحل، وقيل: تحملهم على الرحيل
And it was said the meaning of 'turahhiluhum' is that it makes them descend at the stages, and it was said: it makes them undertake the journey.
والترحيل والإرحال بمعنى الإشخاص والإزعاج
And 'tarhil' and 'irhal' mean dispatching and unsettling.
ورجل رحول وقوم رحل أي يرتحلون كثيرا
And a man who is 'rahul' and a people who are 'rahl' means they travel a lot.
وإبل مرحلة: عليها رحالها، وهي أيضا التي وضعت عنها رحالها
And 'murahhalah' camels: they have their riding gear on them, and they are also those from which the riding gear has been removed.
سو ى ترحيل راحلة وعين، ... أكالئها مخافة أن تناما
Except for the preparation of a riding camel and an eye, ... guarding them for fear they might sleep.
والرحول والرحولة من الإبل: التي تصلح أن ترحل
And the 'rahul' and 'rahula' from the camels: are those fit to be ridden.
أرحل الرجل البعير، وهو رجل مرحل، وذلك إذا أخذ بعيرا صعبا فجعله راحلة
The man made the camel rideable, and he is a 'murahhal' man, and that is when he takes a difficult camel and makes it a riding camel.

والراحلة من الإبل: «1» البعير القوي على الأسفار والأحمال
And the 'rahila' from the camels: is the strong camel for journeys and loads.
يقول: فالناس متساوون ليس لأحد منهم على أحد فضل في النسب، ولكنهم أشباه كإبل مائة ليست فيها راحلة تتبين فيها وتتميز منها بالتمام وحسن المنظر
He says: So people are equal, none of them has precedence over another in lineage, but they are alike, like a hundred camels among which there is no distinguished riding camel that stands out and is distinguished by its perfection and good appearance.
تجدون الناس بعدي كإبل مائة ليس فيها راحلة
You will find people after me like a hundred camels, among which there is no distinguished riding camel.
قيل: سميت راحلة لأنها ترحل كما قال الله عز وجل: في عيشة راضية*، أي مرضية
It was said: it is named 'rahila' because it is ridden, as Allah Almighty said: in a pleasing life*, meaning satisfied.
ومصاب غادية، كأن تجارها ... نشرت عليه برودها ورحالها
And a morning's encounter, as if its merchants... spread upon it their robes and their rihal.
والمرحل: ضرب من برود اليمن، سمي مرحلا لأن عليه تصاوير رحل
And the 'murahhal': is a type of Yemeni cloth, named 'murahhal' because it has pictures of rahals on it.
مرط مرحل: إزار خز فيه علم
A 'murahhal' cloak: a silk garment with a pattern.
عليهن راحولات كل قطيفة، ... من الخز، أو من قيصران علامها
Upon them are 'rahulat' of every cloak, ... of silk, or of patterned qaysaran.
أن رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، خرج ذات يوم وعليه مرط مرحل
That the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, went out one day wearing a 'murahhal' cloak.
فقامت كل واحدة إلى مرطها المرحل
So each one stood up to her 'murahhal' cloak.
