And it was said: he was named thus due to the length of his tongue, and it was said: it is from khatl in speech; because he said to Ka'b ibn Ju'ayl: By your life, I, and my son Ju'ayl... and their mother, are of noble lineage. So Ka'b said to him: You are indeed akhṭal from khatl in speech, which is obscenity, so he was named Al-Akhtal.
والخطل: التلوي والتبختر، وقد خطل في مشيته.
