A man's 'hal': his wife, which here refers to his soul.
ركبت للذنب طرفا ما له طرف، ... فيا لراكب طرف سيء الحال
I embarked on sin with an extreme, which has no end, so woe to the rider of an extreme of bad condition.
حال الفرس: طرائق ظهره، وقيل متنه.
The 'hal' of a horse: the patterns of its back, or its spine.
يا رب غفرا يهد الذنب أجمعه، ... حتى يخر من الآراب كالحال الحال هنا: ورق الشجر يسقط.
O Lord, forgive all my sins, until they fall from the limbs like falling leaves.
يقال ما أحسن حال متن الفرس وهو موضع اللبد، والحال: لحمة المتن.
It is said, 'How excellent is the condition of the horse's back, which is the place of the saddle pad, and 'al-hal' is the flesh of the back.'
حلت في متن الفرس أحول حؤولا إذا ركبته، وفي الصحاح: حال في متن فرسه حؤولا إذا وثب وركب.
I moved with difficulty on the horse's back, moving back and forth, when I rode it, and in Al-Sihah: he moved with difficulty on his horse's back, moving back and forth, when he leaped and rode.
وحال عن ظهر دابته يحول حولا وحؤولا أي زال ومال.
And he moved away from his mount, moving back and forth, meaning he deviated and inclined.
ابن سيده وغيره: حال في ظهر دابته حولا وأحال وثب واستوى على ظهرها، وكلام العرب حال على ظهره وأحال في ظهره.
Ibn Sidah and others said: he mounted his animal, moving back and forth, and 'ahala' means to leap and settle on its back, and the speech of the Arabs is 'hala 'ala zahrihi' and 'ahala fi zahrihi'.
ويقال: حال متنه وحاذ متنه وهو الظهر بعينه.
And it is said: his back moved, and his back moved, and it is the back itself.
الجوهري: أحال في متن فرسه مثل حال أي وثب؛ وفي المثل: تجنب روضة وأحال يعدو أي ترك الخصب واختار عليه الشقاء.
Al-Jawhari said: 'Ahala' on his horse's back is like 'hala', meaning he leaped; and in the proverb: 'He avoided a meadow and leaped,' meaning he abandoned prosperity and chose hardship over it.
ويقال: إنه ليحول أي يجيء ويذهب وهو الجولان.
And it is said: he moves back and forth, meaning he comes and goes, which is wandering.
وحولت المجرة: صارت شدة الحر في وسط السماء؛ قال ذو الرمة:
And the galaxy 'hawwalat': the intensity of heat became in the middle of the sky; Dhu al-Rummah said:
وشعث يشجون الفلا في رؤوسه، ... إذا حولت أم النجوم الشوابك
And dusty ones, their heads filled with the desert, when the mother of stars, the Pleiades, has shifted.
وحولت بمعنى تحولت، ومثله ولى بمعنى تولى.
'Hawwalat' means 'tahawwalat' (transformed), and similarly 'walla' means 'tawalla' (turned away).
وأرض محتالة إذا لم يصبها المطر.
And a 'muhtalah' land if rain does not reach it.
وما أحسن حويله، قال الأصمعي: أي ما أحسن مذهبه الذي يريد.
And how excellent is his 'hawiluh' (intention/path), Al-Asma'i said: meaning how excellent is his desired course.
ويقال: ما أضعف حوله وحويله وحيلته والحيال: خيط يشد من بطان البعير إلى حقبه لئلا يقع الحقب على ثيله.
And it is said: how weak is his strength, his intention, and his stratagem. And 'al-hiyal': a strap tied from the camel's girth to its saddle pad so that the pad does not fall on its tail.
وهذا حيال كلمتك أي مقابلة كلمتك؛ عن ابن الأعرابي ينصبه على الظرف، ولو رفعه على المبتدإ والخبر لجاز، ولكن كذا رواه عن العرب؛ حكاه ابن سيده.
And this is 'hiyal' to your word, meaning opposite to your word; from Ibn Al-A'rabi, he makes it accusative as an adverb, and if he raised it as a subject and predicate, it would be permissible, but thus he narrated it from the Arabs; Ibn Sidah recounted it.
وقعد حياله وبحياله أي بإزائه، وأصله الواو.
And he sat 'hiyaluhu' and 'bihialuhu', meaning beside him, and its origin is 'waw'.
والحويل: الشاهد.
And 'al-hawil': the witness.
والحويل: الكفيل، والاسم الحوالة.
And 'al-hawil': the guarantor, and the noun is 'al-hawalah'.
واحتال عليه بالدين: من الحوالة.
And he schemed against him regarding the debt: from 'al-hawalah'.
وحاولت الشيء أي أردته، والاسم الحويل؛ قال الكميت:
And I 'hawaltu' the thing, meaning I desired it, and the noun is 'al-hawil'; Al-Kumait said:
وذات اسمين والألوان شتى ... تحمق، وهي كيسة الحويل
And possessing two names, and various colors... she acts foolishly, and she is the clever one of desire.
حول نفسه، يتعدى ولا يتعدى؛ قال ذو الرمة يصف الحرباء:
'Hawwala' himself, it is transitive and intransitive; Dhu al-Rummah said, describing the chameleon:
يظل بها الحرباء للشمس مائلا ... على الجذل، إلا أنه لا يكبر إذا حول الظل، العشي، رأيته ... حنيفا، وفي قرن الضحى يتنصر
The chameleon remains leaning towards the sun on the log... except that it does not grow larger when the shadow shifts, in the evening, I saw it... turning towards the Qibla, and in the morning it turns towards Christianity.
يقول إذا حول الظل العشي وذلك عند ميل الشمس إلى جهة المغرب صار الحرباء متوجها للقبلة، فهو حنيف، فإذا كان في أول النهار فهو متوجه للشرق لأن الشمس تكون في جهة المشرق فيصير متنصرا، لأن النصارى تتوجه في صلاتها جهة المشرق.
He says: when the shadow shifts in the evening, and that is when the sun leans towards the west, the chameleon turns towards the Qibla, so it is 'hanif' (turning towards the Qibla), and when it is in the early part of the day, it turns towards the east because the sun is in the east, so it becomes 'mutanasir' (turning towards Christianity), because Christians turn towards the east in their prayers.
واحتال المنزل: مرت عليه أحوال؛ قال ذو الرمة:
And the dwelling 'ihtalat': periods have passed over it; Dhu al-Rummah said:
فيا لك من دار تحمل أهلها ... أيادي سبا، بعدي، وطال احتيالها
Oh, what a dwelling whose people have carried away... favors of Saba, after me, and its time has been long.
واحتال أيضا: تغير؛ قال النمر:
And 'ihtala' also means: to change; Al-Nimr said:
ميثاء جاد عليها وابل هطل، ... فأمرعت لاحتيال فرط أعوام
A fertile land, heavy rain poured upon it, and it became verdant due to the change of many years.
وحاولت له بصري إذا حددته نحوه ورميته به؛ عن اللحياني.
And I directed my sight towards him when I focused on him and aimed it at him; from Al-Lihyani.
وحال لونه أي تغير واسود.
And his color 'halat', meaning it changed and became black.
وأحالت الدار وأحولت: أتى عليها حول، وكذلك الطعام وغيره، فهو محيل؛ قال الكميت:
And the dwelling 'ahalat' and 'ahawlat': a year has passed over it, and likewise food and other things, so it is 'muhil'; Al-Kumait said:
ألم تلمم على الطلل المحيل ... بفيد، وما بكاؤك بالطلول؟
Have you not approached the aged ruin... in Fayd, and why is your weeping over the ruins?
والمحيل: الذي أتت عليه أحوال وغيرته، وبخ نفسه على الوقوف والبكاء في دار قد ارتحل عنها أهلها متذكرا أيامهم مع كونه أشيب غير شاب؛ وذلك في البيت بعده وهو:
And 'al-muhil': is that over which periods have passed and changed it, and he blames himself for standing and weeping at a dwelling whose people have departed, remembering their days while he is old, not young; and that is in the verse after it, which is:
أأشيب كالوليد، رسم دار ... تسائل ما أصم عن السؤول؟
Am I, an old man like a child, at the remains of a dwelling... asking what is deaf to the question?
أي أتسأل أشيب أي وأنت أشيب وتسائل ما أصم أي تسائل ما لا يجيب فكأنه أصم؛ وأنشد أبو زيد لأبي النجم:
Meaning: do you ask, O old man, meaning you are old, and ask what is deaf, meaning you ask what does not answer, as if it were deaf; Abu Zayd recited for Abu Al-Najm:
يا صاحبي عرجا قليلا، ... حتى نحيي الطلل المحيلا
O my two companions, halt a little... until we greet the aged ruin.
وأنشد ابن بري لعمر بن لجإ: ألم تلمم على الطلل المحيل، ... بغربي الأبارق من حقيل؟
And Ibn Al-Barri recited for Umar ibn Laja': Have you not approached the aged ruin... west of Al-Abariq from Haqil?
قال ابن بري: وشاهد المحول قول عمر بن أبي ربيعة: قفا نحيي الطلل المحولا، ... والرسم من أسماء والمنزلا،
Ibn Al-Barri said: And the evidence for 'al-muhawwal' is the saying of Umar ibn Abi Rabi'ah: Stop, let us greet the changed ruin... and the trace of names and the dwelling,
قال: تقديره قفا نحيي الطلل المحول بأن يؤهل، من أهله الله؛ وقال الأخوص: ألمم على طلل تقادم محول
He said: The estimation is: Stop, let us greet the changed ruin by it being inhabited, by God making it inhabited; and Al-Akhwas said: Approach a ruin that has passed through time and changed.
وقال امرؤ القيس: من القاصرات الطرف لو دب محول، ... من الذر فوق الإتب منها، لأثرا
And Imru' al-Qais said: Among the modest-eyed, if a changed one, from the ants, crawled upon her garment, she would leave a mark.
أبو زيد: فلان على حول فلان إذا كان مثله في السن أو ولد على أثره.
Abu Zayd said: So-and-so is 'ala hawl' of so-and-so if he is similar in age or was born after him.
وحالت القوس واستحالت، بمعنى، أي انقلبت عن حالها التي غمزت عليها وحصل في قابها اعوجاج.
And the bow 'halat' and 'istahalat', meaning it overturned from the state it was bent to, and a crookedness occurred in its curve.
وحوال: اسم موضع؛ قال خراش بن زهير:
And 'Hawal': is a place name; Kharash ibn Zuhayr said:
فإني دليل، غير معط إتاوة ... على نعم ترعى حوالا وأجربا
For I am a guide, not giving tribute... over camels grazing in Hawal and Ajrab.
الأزهري في الخماسي: الحولولة الكيسة، وهو ثلاثي الأصل ألحق بالخماسي لتكرير بعض حروفها.
Al-Azhari in the Al-Khumasi: 'Al-Hawalulah' is cleverness, and it is of tri-literal origin, attached to the pentiliterals due to the repetition of some of its letters.
وبنو حوالة: بطن.
And Banu Hawalah: a clan.
وبنو محولة: هم بنو عبد الله بن غطفان وكان اسمه عبد العزى فسماه سيدنا رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، عبد الله فسموا بني محولة لذلك.
And Banu Muhawwalah: they are the children of Abdullah ibn Ghaftan, whose name was Abd Al-Uzza, so our master, the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, named him Abdullah, and they were named Banu Muhawwalah for that reason.
وحويل: اسم موضع؛ قال النابغة الجعدي:
And 'Huwail': is a place name; Al-Nabigha Al-Ja'di said:
تحل بأطراف الوحاف ودونها ... حويل، فريطات، فرعم، فأخرب
