والحولاء والحولاء من الناقة: كالمشيمة للمرأة، وهي جلدة ماؤها أخضر تخرج مع الولد وفيها أغراس وعروق وخطوط خضر وحمر
And the hawla' and hawla' from a she-camel is like the placenta for a woman, and it is a membrane whose fluid is green, emerging with the offspring, containing green and red growths, veins, and lines.
وقيل: الحولاء الماء الذي في السلى.
And it was said: Al-hawla' is the fluid that is in the amnion.
سميت حولاء لأنها مشتملة على الولد
It was named hawla' because it envelops the child.
على حولاء يطفو السخد فيها، ... فراها الشيذمان عن الجنين
Upon a hawla' the afterbirth floats within it, ... and the Shaidhaman saw it from the fetus.
وهي أعقاؤه، الواحد عقي، وهو شيء يخرج من دبره وهو في بطن أمه بعضه أسود وبعضه أصفر وبعضه أخضر.
And they are its afterbirths; the singular is 'aqiyy, which is something that emerges from its anus while it is in its mother's womb, some of it black, some yellow, and some green.
وقد عقى الحوار يعقي إذا نتجته أمه فما خرج من دبره عقي حتى يأكل الشجر.
And a camel calf has produced its afterbirth ('aqqa) when its mother gives birth, and what emerges from its anus is 'aqiyy until it eats trees.
ونزلوا في مثل حولاء الناقة وفي مثل حولاء السلى: يريدون بذلك الخصب والماء لأن الحولاء ملأى ماء ريا.
And they settled in a place like the hawla' of a she-camel and like the hawla' of the amnion: they mean by that fertility and water, because the hawla' is full of abundant water.
ورأيت أرضا مثل الحولاء إذا اخضرت وأظلمت خضرة، وذلك حين يتفقأ بعضها وبعض لم يتفقأ؛
And I saw land like the hawla' when it turned green and darkened with verdure, and that is when some of it splits open and some has not yet split open.
بأغن كالحولاء زان جنابه ... نور الدكادك، سوقه تتخضد
With a camel whose flank is adorned like the hawla' ... with the light of the plains, its branches are becoming green.
واحوالت الأرض إذا اخضرت واستوى نباتها.
And the land became green (iḥawwalat) when it turned green and its vegetation matured.
إن إخواننا من أهل الكوفة نزلوا في مثل حولاء الناقة من ثمار متهدلة وأنهار متفجرة أي نزلوا في الخصب
Our brothers from the people of Kufa have settled in a place like the hawla' of a she-camel, with hanging fruits and gushing rivers, meaning they settled in abundance.
الحول: الأخدود الذي تغرس فيه النخل على صف.
Al-hawl: The furrow in which palm trees are planted in a row.
وأحال عليه: استضعفه.
And he considered him weak (aḥāla 'alayhi): he deemed him weak.
وأحال عليه بالسوط يضربه أي أقبل.
And he turned towards him with the whip, striking him, meaning he approached.
وأحلت عليه بالكلام: أقبلت عليه.
And she addressed him with words (aḥallat 'alayhi bil-kalām): she approached him.
وأحال الذئب على الدم: أقبل عليه؛
And the wolf turned towards the blood (aḥāla 'alā al-dam): it approached it.
مما أحال على الوادي أي ما أقبل عليه
Of what approached the valley (aḥāla 'alā al-wādī), meaning what turned towards it.
فجعلوا يضحكون ويحيل بعضهم على بعض أي يقبل عليه ويميل إليه.
And they began to laugh, and some turned towards others (yuḥīlu ba'ḍuhum 'alā ba'ḍ), meaning they approached and inclined towards each other.
وأحلت الماء في الجدول: صببته؛
And I poured water into the stream (aḥaltu al-mā' fī al-jadwal): I poured it.
يحيلون السجال على السجال
They pour the buckets onto the buckets.
وأحال عليه الماء: أفرغه؛
And he poured water onto it (aḥāla 'alayhi al-mā'): he emptied it.
يحيل في جدول تحبو ضفادعه، ... حبو الجواري، ترى في مائه نطقا
It flows into a stream where its frogs crawl, ... crawling like maidens, you see speech in its water.
يقال للقوم إذا أمحلوا فقل لبنهم: حال صبوحهم على غبوقهم أي صار صبوحهم وغبوقهم واحدا.
It is said of people when they are in drought and their milk is scarce: their morning drink has become their evening drink (ḥāla ṣabūḥuhum 'alā ghubūqihim), meaning their morning and evening rations became one.
وحال: بمعنى انصب.
And it flowed (ḥāla): meaning it poured.
وحال الماء على الأرض يحول عليها حولا وأحلته أنا عليها أحيله إحالة أي صببته.
And water flowed on the ground (ḥāla al-mā' 'alā al-arḍ) flowing upon it (ḥawlan), and I caused it to flow upon it (aḥaltuhu 'alayhā uḥīlu iḥālah), meaning I poured it.
وأحال الماء من الدلو أي صبه وقلبها؛
And he poured water from the bucket (aḥāla al-mā' min al-dalw), meaning he poured it and tilted it.
وأنشد ابن بري لزهير: يحيل في جدول تحبو ضفادعه
And Ibn Burri recited for Zuhayr: It flows into a stream where its frogs crawl.
وأحال الليل: انصب على الأرض وأقبل؛
And the night descended (aḥāla al-layl): it poured onto the land and approached.
لا ترهب الذئب على أطلائها، ... وإن أحال الليل من ورائها
Do not fear the wolf over its young shoots, ... even if the night descends from behind them.
الحال: موضع اللبد من ظهر الفرس، وقيل: هي طريقة المتن؛
Al-ḥāl: The place of the saddle pad on the back of a horse; and it was said: it is the line of the back.
كأن غلامي، إذ علا حال متنه ... على ظهر باز في السماء، محلق
As if my young man, when he ascended the line of his back, ... on the back of a falcon soaring in the sky.
كميت يزل اللبد عن حال متنه
A dark bay horse whose saddle pad slips from the line of its back.
الحال لحم المتنين، والحمأة والكارة التي يحملها الحمال، واللواء الذي يعقد للأمراء، وفيه ثلاث لغات: الخال، بالخاء المعجمة، وهو أعرقها، والحال والجال.
Al-ḥāl is the flesh of the loins, and the load and the burden that a porter carries, and the banner that is tied for princes, and it has three pronunciations: Al-khāl, with the unpointed khā', which is the most archaic, and al-ḥāl, and al-jāl.
الحال: لحم باطن فخذ حمار الوحش.
Al-ḥāl: The inner thigh meat of a wild ass.
الحال: حال الإنسان.
Al-ḥāl: A person's condition.
الحال: الثقل.
Al-ḥāl: The burden.
الحال: مرأة الرجل.
Al-ḥāl: A man's wife.
الحال: العجلة التي يعلم عليها الصبي المشي؛
Al-ḥāl: The walker on which a child is taught to walk.
يا ليت شعري هل أكسى شعار تقى، ... والشعر يبيض حالا بعد ما حال
Oh, I wish I knew if I would be clothed in the garment of piety, ... and the hair turns white gradually after time has passed.
فكلما ابيض شعري، فالسواد إلى ... نفسي تميل، فنفسي بالهوى حالي
And whenever my hair turns white, the blackness ... tends towards my soul, so my soul is transformed by love.
