أمن أجل حبل، لا أباك، ضربته بمنسأة؟
Was it because of a rope, may your father be killed, that you struck him with a staff?
قد جر حبلك أحبلا
Your rope has dragged along ropes
هلم إلى حكم ابن صخرة، إنه سيحكم فيما بيننا، ثم يعدل
Come to the judgment of Ibn Sakhr, he will judge between us, then be just
والحبل: الرسن، وجمعه حبول وحبال.
And the rope: the rein, and its plural is hubool and hibaal.
وحبل الشيء حبلا: شده بالحبل؛
And to tie a thing with a rope: to bind it with the rope;
في الرأس منها حبه محبول
In its head is its tied knot
يا حابل اذكر حلا أي يا من يشد الحبل اذكر وقت حله.
O trapper, remember the time of untying, meaning O you who ties the rope, remember the time of its untying.
كل جلال يملأ المحبلا
Every saddlebag fills the rope
يغدو الناس بحبالهم فلا يوزع رجل عن جمل يخطمه ؛ يريد الحبال التي تشد فيها الإبل أي يأخذ كل إنسان جملا يخطمه بحبله ويتملكه؛
People go out with their ropes, and no man is prevented from a camel he leads; meaning the ropes with which camels are tied, i.e., each person takes a camel, leads it with his rope, and possesses it;
والحبل: العهد والذمة والأمان وهو مثل الجوار؛
And the rope: the covenant, the protection, and the security, and it is like neighborhood;
ما زلت معتصما بحبل منكم، من حل ساحتكم بأسباب نجا
I have continued to hold fast to a rope from you, from those who reside in your vicinity, by means of salvation
واعتصموا بحبل الله جميعا ؛
And hold fast to the rope of Allah all together;
يا ذا الحبل الشديد ؛
O possessor of the strong rope;
انقطعت بي الحبال في سفري أي انقطعت بي الأسباب، من الحبل السبب.
My means have been cut off on my journey, meaning my causes have been cut off, from the rope meaning the cause.
اللهم إن فلان بن فلان في ذمتك وحبل جوارك ؛
O Allah, so-and-so, son of so-and-so, is in Your protection and the bond of Your neighborhood;
وإذا تجوزها حبال قبيلة، ... أخذت من الأخرى إليك حبالها
And when the bonds of a tribe passed it, ... it took its bonds to you from the other
بيننا وبين القوم حبال أي عهود ومواثيق.
Between us and the people are ropes, meaning covenants and agreements.
أتوك على قلص نواج متصلة بحبائل الإسلام أي عهوده وأسبابه، على أنها جمع الجمع.
They came to you on swift young camels connected by the bonds of Islam, meaning its covenants and its means, considering it a plural of a plural.
إني بحبلك واصل حبلي، وبريش نبلك رائش نبلي
I am connecting my rope with your rope, and I am equipping my arrows with the fletching of your arrows
والقرط في حرة الذفرى معلقه، تباعد الحبل منها، فهو يضطرب
And the earring is hanging on the upper part of the neck, the rope is far from it, so it swings
فضربته على حبل عاتقه ، قال: هو موضع الرداء من العنق، وقيل: هو عرق أو عصب هناك.
So I struck him on the rope of his shoulder, he said: it is the place of the cloak on the neck, and it is said: it is a vein or a nerve there.
ونحن أقرب إليه من حبل الوريد ؛
And We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein;
قال: الحبل هو الوريد فأضيف إلى نفسه لاختلاف لفظ الاسمين، قال: والوريد عرق بين الحلقوم والعلباوين؛
He said: the rope is the vein, so it is attributed to itself due to the difference in the wording of the two names, he said: and the vein is a vessel between the throat and the two jugulars;
وهو على حبل ذراعك أي في القرب منك.
It is within the reach of your forearm, meaning close to you.
خطامها حبل الذراع أجمع
Its halter is the entire rope of the forearm
وهذا على حبل ذراعك أي ممكن لك لا يحال بينكما، وهو على المثل،
And this is within the reach of your forearm, meaning possible for you, with nothing preventing between you, and it is according to the proverb,
وحبال الفرس عروق قوائمه؛
And the ropes of the horse are the veins of its legs;
كأن نجوما علقت في مصامه، بأمراس كتان إلى صم جندل
As if stars were hung in its stable, with linen ropes to hard rocks
حبائله مبثوثة بسبيله، ويفنى إذا ما أخطأته الحبائل
Its snares are spread on his path, and he perishes if the snares miss him
النساء حبائل الشيطان أي مصايده، واحدتها حبالة، بالكسر، وهي ما يصاد بها من أي شيء كان.
Women are the snares of Satan, meaning their traps, the singular of which is hubalah, with a kasra, and it is whatever is used for hunting from anything.
وينصبون له الحبائل.
And they set snares for him.
حبل الصيد حبلا واحتبله: أخذه وصاده بالحبالة أو نصبها له.
To trap game with a snare: to take it and hunt it with a snare or to set it up for it.
وبَاتَ بِثَدْيَيْهَا الرَّضِيعُ كَأَنَّهُ قَذًى، حَبَلَتْهُ عَيْنُهَا، لَا يُنِيمُهَا
And the infant lay between her breasts as if it were a speck of dust, his eye having ensnared him, not letting him sleep
ومنه قول الأعشى: ومحبول ومحتبل
And from it is the saying of Al-A'sha: and a trapped one and a trapper
الأزهري: الحبل مصدر حبلت الصيد واحتبلته إذا نصبت له حبالة فنشب فيها وأخذته.
Al-Azharī: Al-ḥabl is the masdar of ḥabiltu al-ṣayd and iḥtabaltuhu if you set a snare for it and it got caught in it and you took it.
فقلت: إن ناسا من قومي يتحبلونها فيأكلونها ، أي يصطادونها بالحبالة.
So I said: Indeed, some people from my tribe hunt them with snares and eat them, meaning they hunt them with snares.
ولقد أغدو، وما يعدمني صاحب غير طويل المحتبل
And I would go out, and I would not lack a companion who did not have short pasterns
والمحتبل من الدابة: رسغها لأنه موضع الحبل الذي يشد فيه.
And the fetlock of an animal: its pastern because it is the place of the rope to which it is tied.
وقد احتبلهم الموت.
And death has ensnared them.
إنه محبل الشعر أي كأن كل قرن من قرون رأسه حبل لأنه جعله تقاصيب لجعودة شعره وطوله، ويروى بالكاف محبك الشعر.
He has rope-like hair, meaning as if each lock of his head was a rope because he made it into strands for the curliness and length of his hair, and it is narrated with a kaf as 'muḥabbik al-sha'r'.
وأن الفتى يمسي بحبليه عانيا؟
And that the young man spends his days and nights in distress?
ضربت عليهم الذلة أين ما ثقفوا إلا بحبل من الله وحبل من الناس ؛
Disgrace has been put upon them wherever they are found, except for a bond with Allah and a bond with the people;
رأتني بحبليها فصدت مخافة، وفي الحبل روعاء الفؤاد فروق
She saw me with her two ropes and turned away in fear, and in the rope was a frightened heart, fearful
أوصيكم بكتاب الله وعترتي أحدهما أعظم من الآخر وهو كتاب الله حبل ممدود من السماء إلى الأرض أي نور ممدود؛
I recommend to you the Book of Allah and my progeny, one of them is greater than the other, and it is the Book of Allah, a rope extended from the sky to the earth, meaning an extended light;
حتى يتبين لكم الخيط الأبيض من الخيط الأسود من الفجر؛ يعني نور الصبح من ظلمة الليل، فالخيط الأبيض هو نور الصبح إذا تبين للأبصار وانفلق، والخيط الأسود دونه في الإنارة لغلبة سواد الليل عليه، ولذلك نعت بالأسود ونعت الآخر بالأبيض، والخيط والحبل قريبان من السواء.
Until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of night; meaning the light of morning from the darkness of night, so the white thread is the light of morning when it becomes apparent to the eyes and breaks through, and the black thread is inferior to it in illumination due to the dominance of the darkness of night over it, and therefore it is described as black and the other is described as white, and the thread and the rope are close in meaning.
وهو حبل الله المتين أي نور هداه، وقيل عهده وأمانه الذي يؤمن من العذاب.
And it is the strong rope of Allah, meaning the light of His guidance, and it is said His covenant and His security which protects from punishment.
أتيتك من جبلي طيء ما تركت من حبل إلا وقفت عليه ؛
I came to you from the mountains of Tayy, I did not leave a sand dune except that I stopped at it;
صعدنا على حبل أي قطعة من الرمل ضخمة ممتدة.
We ascended a dune, meaning a large, extended piece of sand.
وجعل حبل المشاة بين يديه أي طريقهم الذي يسلكونه في الرمل، وقيل: أراد صفهم ومجتمعهم في مشيهم تشبيها بحبل الرمل.
And he made the path of the pedestrians before him, meaning their road which they take in the sand, and it is said: he meant their formation and their gathering in their walking, likening it to a sand dune.
فإذا فيها حبائل اللؤلؤ ؛
And behold, in it are ropes of pearl;
فلان حبيل براح أي شجاع، ومنه قيل للأسد حبيل براح، يقال ذلك للواقف مكانه كالأسد لا يفر.
So-and-so is brave and steadfast, meaning courageous, and from this the lion is called brave and steadfast, this is said of one who stands his ground like a lion and does not flee.
