الأجل: غاية الوقت في الموت وحلول الدين ونحوه.
The appointed time: the limit of time for death, the arrival of a debt, and the like.
والأجل: مدة الشيء.
And the appointed time: the duration of a thing.
ولا تعزموا عقدة النكاح حتى يبلغ الكتاب أجله ؛ أي حتى تقضي عدتها.
And do not resolve on the contract of marriage until the appointed time has come; meaning until she completes her waiting period.
ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك لكان لزاما وأجل مسمى ؛ أي لكان القتل الذي نالهم لازما لهم أبدا وكان العذاب دائما بهم، ويعنى بالأجل المسمى القيامة لأن الله تعالى وعدهم بالعذاب ليوم القيامة، وذلك قوله تعالى: بل الساعة موعدهم، والجمع آجال.
And were it not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it would have been a necessity and a specified term; meaning the killing that befell them would have been a permanent necessity for them and the punishment would have been perpetual upon them. The specified term is meant to be the Day of Resurrection because Allah Almighty promised them punishment for the Day of Resurrection, and that is His saying: 'Nay, the Hour is their appointed time', and the plural is 'ajal'.
والتأجيل: تحديد الأجل.
And setting the appointed time: determining the appointed time.
كتابا مؤجلا .
as a decree for a stated term.
وأجل الشيء يأجل، فهو آجل وأجيل: تأخر، وهو نقيض العاجل.
And a thing is delayed (yajil), so it is delayed (ajil) and (ajil): it is late, and it is the opposite of the immediate.
والآجلة: الآخرة، والعاجلة: الدنيا، والآجل والآجلة: ضد العاجل والعاجلة.
And the hereafter (al-ajilah): the afterlife, and the present (al-'ajilah): this world, and the delayed (al-ajil) and the delayed (al-ajilah): are the opposite of the immediate (al-'ajil) and the immediate (al-'ajilah).
يتعجلونه ولا يتأجلونه.
they hasten it and do not postpone it.
يتعجله ولا يتأجله ؛ التأجل تفعل من الأجل، وهو الوقت المضروب المحدود في المستقبل أي أنهم يتعجلون العمل بالقرآن ولا يؤخرونه.
he hastens it and does not postpone it; 'ta'ajjul' is a verb form from 'ajal', which is the set and limited time in the future, meaning they hasten to act upon the Quran and do not delay it.
فتأجل متأجل منا أي استأذن في الرجوع إلى أهله وطلب أن يضرب له في ذلك أجل، واستأجلته فأجلني إلى مدة.
So one of us sought a delay, meaning he asked permission to return to his family and requested that a term be set for him for that, and I asked him for a delay, and he granted me a delay until a certain period.
والإجل، بالكسر: القطيع من بقر الوحش، والجمع آجال.
And 'ijl', with a kasra: a herd of wild cattle, and its plural is 'ajal'.
في يوم مطير ترمض فيه الآجال ؛ هي جمع إجل، بكسر الهمزة وسكون الجيم، وهو القطيع من بقر الوحش والظباء، وتأجلت البهائم أي صارت آجالا؛
on a rainy day when the herds are scattered; it is the plural of 'ijl', with a hamza kasra and a jim sukun, which is the herd of wild cattle and gazelles, and the animals became herds;
والعين ساكنة، على أطلائها، ... عوذا، تأجل بالفضاء بهامها
And the eye is still, upon its young, ... seeking refuge, grazing in the open with their calves
وتأجل الصوار [الصوار]: صار إجلا.
And the herd of young camels became a herd (ijl).
والإجل: لغة في الإيل وهو الذكر من الأوعال، ويقال: هو الذي يسمى بالفارسية كوزن، والجيم بدل من الياء كقولهم في برني برنج؛
And 'ijl': a dialectal form for 'ayyal', which is the male of wild goats, and it is said: it is what is called in Persian 'kuzan', and the jim is a substitute for the ya, as they say 'birni' for 'biranj';
كأن في أذنابهن الشول، ... من عبس الصيف، قرون الإجل
As if in their tails are the young, ... from the summer heat, the horns of the wild goat
وتأجلوا على الشيء: تجمعوا.
And they gathered upon the thing: they assembled.
والإجل: وجع في العنق، وقد أجله منه يأجله؛ عن الفارسي، وأجله وآجله عن غيره، كل ذلك: داواه فأجله، كحمأ البئر نزع حمأتها، وأجله كقذى العين نزع قذاها، وآجله كعاجله، وقد أجل الرجل، بالكسر، أي نام على عنقه فاشتكاها.
And 'ijl': a pain in the neck, and he treated him for it (ajalahu minhu) from him, according to Al-Farisi, and he treated him (ajjalahu) and he treated him (ajjaluhu) from others, all of that means: he treated him and healed him, like removing the sediment from a well, and removing the irritant from the eye, and treating him like his ailment, and a man may have 'ijl', with a kasra, meaning he slept on his neck and complained of it.
والتأجيل: المداواة، منه.
And 'ta'jil': the treatment, from this.
بي إجل فأجلوني أي داووني منه كما يقال طنيته من الطنى ومرضته.
I have a neck ailment, so treat me from it, meaning treat me from it, just as it is said 'I afflicted him with 'tana' and I made him sick'.
هو الإجل والإدل وهو وجع العنق من تعادي الوساد؛
It is 'ijl' and 'idl', which is a neck pain from the unevenness of the pillow;
أجل أن يحزنه أي من أجله ولأجله، والكل لغات وتفتح همزتها وتكسر؛
for him to grieve him, meaning for his sake and because of him, and all are dialects, and their hamza is opened and broken;
أن تقتل ولدك أجل أن يأكل معك.
that you kill your child for the sake of him eating with you.
وأجلوا مالهم: حبسوه عن المرعى.
And they withheld their property: they kept it from grazing.
وأجل، بفتحتين: بمعنى نعم، وقولهم أجل إنما هو جواب مثل نعم؛
And 'ajal', with two fathas: means 'yes', and their saying 'ajal' is just an answer like 'na'am';
فإذا قال أنت سوف تذهب قلت أجل، وكان أحسن من نعم، وإذا قال أتذهب قلت نعم، وكان أحسن من أجل.
So if he says 'You will go', you say 'ajal', and it is better than 'na'am', and if he says 'Are you going?', you say 'na'am', and it is better than 'ajal'.
وأجل: تصديق لخبر يخبرك به صاحبك فيقول فعل ذلك فتصدقه بقولك له أجل، وأما نعم فهو جواب المستفهم بكلام لا جحد فيه، تقول له: هل صليت؟ فيقول: نعم، فهو جواب المستفهم.
And 'ajal': is confirmation of news that your friend tells you, so he says 'he did that', and you confirm it by saying 'ajal' to him. As for 'na'am', it is the answer to an inquirer with words that contain no denial. You say to him: 'Did you pray?', and he says: 'Na'am', so it is the answer to the inquirer.
والمأجل، بفتح الجيم: مستنقع الماء، والجمع المآجل.
And 'al-ma'jil', with a fatha on the jim: a pool of water, and its plural is 'al-ma'ajil'.
والمأجل شبه حوض واسع يؤجل أي يجمع فيه الماء إذا كان قليلا ثم يفجر إلى المشارات والمزرعة والآبار، وهو بالفارسية طرحه.
And 'al-ma'jil' is like a wide basin where water is collected (yu'ajjalu), meaning water is gathered in it when it is scarce, then it is channeled to the pastures, the fields, and the wells, and in Persian it is 'tarhah'.
وأجله فيه: جمعه، وتأجل فيه: تجمع.
And he collected it in it (ajallahu fihi): he gathered it, and it gathered in it (ta'ajjala fihi): it assembled.
والأجيل: الشربة وهو الطين يجمع حول النخلة؛ أزدية، وقيل: المآجل الجبأة التي تجتمع فيها مياه الأمطار من الدور؛
And 'al-ajil': a drink, which is the mud that gathers around the palm tree; from Azd, and it is said: 'al-ma'ajil' are the puddles where rainwater collects from the houses;
وقد تأجل الماء، فهو متأجل: يعني استنقع في موضع.
And the water has collected (ta'ajjala), so it is collected (muta'ajjil): meaning it has pooled in a place.
وفعلت ذلك من أجلك وإجلك، بفتح الهمزة وكسرها، وفي التنزيل العزيز: من أجل ذلك كتبنا على بني إسرائيل ، الألف مقطوعة، أي من جرا ذلك؛
And I did that for your sake and because of you (min ajlika wa ijlika), with a fatha and a kasra on the hamza, and in the Noble Quran: 'For that reason We decreed upon the Children of Israel', the alif is cut, meaning because of that;
وقد قرئ من إجل ذلك ، وقراءة العامة من أجل ذلك، وكذلك فعلته من أجلاك وإجلاك أي من جراك، ويعدى بغير من؛
And it has been read 'min ijl dhalik', and the common reading is 'min ajli dhalik', and likewise I did it for your sake and because of you (min ajlak wa ijlāk) meaning because of you, and it is transitive without 'min';
أجل أن الله قد فضلكم، ... فوق من أحكأ صلبا بإزار
Indeed, Allah has favored you, ... above one who has a strong backbone with a loincloth
وقد روي هذا البيت: إجل أن الله قد فضلكم.
And this verse has been narrated: 'Ijl that Allah has favored you'.
والأصل في قولهم فعلته من أجلك أجل عليهم أجلا أي جنى عليهم وجر.
And the origin of their saying 'I did it for your sake' is 'ajala 'alayhim ajalan', meaning it caused them harm and brought about [trouble].
والتأجل: الإقبال والإدبار،
And 'ta'ajjul': is approaching and retreating,
عهدي به قد كسي ثمت لم يزل، ... بدار يزيد، طاعما يتأجل «2»
My acquaintance with him was that he was clothed, then he did not cease, ... in the house of Yazid, eating and moving back and forth.
وأجل عليهم شرا يأجله ويأجله أجلا: جناه وهيجه؛
And he brought evil upon them (ajala 'alayhim sharra) he caused it and brought it about (yajluhu wa yajluhu ajalan): he incurred it and incited it;
وأهل خباء صالح كنت بينهم، ... قد احتربوا في عاجل أنا آجله «3»
And the people of a good tent, I was among them, ... they fought over something immediate that I am bringing about.
أي أنا جانيه.
Meaning I am its perpetrator.
فإن تك أم ابني زميلة أثكلت، ... فيا رب أخرى قد أجلت لها ثكلا
If the mother of my two sons, Zamila, has been bereaved, ... then O Lord, another one I have brought her a bereavement.
أي جلبت لها تكلا وهيجته؛
Meaning I brought her a bereaved child and incited it;
وأهل خباء آمنين فجعتهم ... بشيء عزير عاجل، أنا آجله
And the people of a secure tent, I afflicted them ... with something difficult and immediate, that I am bringing about.
وأقبلت أسعى أسأل القوم ما لهم، ... سؤالك بالشيء الذي أنت جاهله
And I came running, asking the people what was wrong with them, ... like your asking about something you are ignorant of.
وهم تعناني، وأنت أجلته، ... فعنى الندامى والغريرية الصهبا
And they are troubling me, and you caused it, ... so the companions and the naive ones were troubled by the red wine.
أجلت عليهم آجل وآجل أجلا أي جررت جريرة.
I brought upon them a consequence and another consequence, a consequence (ajaltu 'alayhim ajilan wa ajilan ajalan), meaning I incurred a penalty.
وجلبت عليهم وجررت وأجلت بمعنى واحد أي جنيت.
And I brought upon them, and I dragged, and I caused (ajaltu) all mean one thing: I incurred.
وأجل لأهله يأجل ويأجل: كسب وجمع واحتال؛
And he earned for his family (ajala li-ahlihi) he earned and gathered and contrived;
حلت سليمى ساحة القليب ... بأجلى، محلة الغريب «1».
Salima settled in the courtyard of the well ... in Ajla, the dwelling of the stranger.
