Al-nusuk and al-nusk: worship and obedience, and everything by which one draws near to God Almighty.

وقيل لثعلب: هل يسمى الصوم نسكا؟ فقال: كل حق لله عز وجل يسمى نسكا.

And Tha'lab was asked: 'Is fasting called nusuk?' He replied: 'Every right due to God, the Mighty and Majestic, is called nusuk.'

He worshipped God Almighty, he worshipped (yansk, nask, nask, nusk - the latter with dammah according to Al-Lihyani), and he performed worship (tanassaka).

And a man is nasik: a worshipper.

وقد نسك وتنسك أي تعبد.

And he performed worship (nasaka) and he performed worship (tanassaka), meaning he worshipped.

ونسك، بالضم، نساكة أي صار ناسكا، والجمع نساك.

And he became (nusk, with dammah) nasakah, meaning he became a nasik, and the plural is nussak.

And al-nusk and al-nasikah: the sacrifice; and it was said: al-nusk is the blood, and al-nasikah is the sacrifice.

تقول: من فعل كذا وكذا فعليه نسك أي دم يهريقه بمكة، شرفها الله تعالى، واسم تلك الذبيحة النسيكة، والجمع نسك ونسائك.

You say: 'Whoever does such and such, it is incumbent upon him to offer nusuk, meaning blood to shed in Mecca, may God ennoble it. And the name of that sacrifice is al-nasikah, and the plural is nusk and nasa'ik.'

والنسك: ما أمرت به الشريعة، والورع: ما نهت عنه.

And al-nusk: what the Sharia commands, and al-wara' (piety/scrupulousness): what it forbids.

والمنسك والمنسك: شرعة النسك.

And al-mansak and al-mansik: the rite of worship.

وفي التنزيل: وأرنا مناسكنا ؛ أي متعبداتنا، وقيل: المنسك النسك نفسه.

And in the Qur'an: 'And show us our manasikana; meaning our places of worship. And it was said: al-mansak is the worship itself.

And Al-Farra' said: 'Al-mansak and al-mansik in the speech of the Arabs means the habitual place that one frequents.'

ويقال: إن لفلان منسكا يعتاده في خير كان أو غيره، وبه سميت المناسك.

And it is said: 'So-and-so has a mansak that he frequents, whether in good or otherwise, and by this, the manasik were named.'

قال: والنسك في هذا الموضع يدل على معنى النحر كأنه قال: جعلنا لكل أمة أن تتقرب بأن تذبح الذبائح لله، فمن قال منسك فمعناه مكان نسك مثل مجلس مكان جلوس، ومن قال منسك فمعناه المصدر نحو النسك والنسوك.

He said: 'And al-nusk in this context indicates the meaning of slaughtering, as if he said: We made it for every nation to draw near by slaughtering sacrifices to God. So whoever says mansak, its meaning is a place of sacrifice like majlis is a place of sitting. And whoever says mansik, its meaning is the masdar (verbal noun) like al-nusk and al-nusook.'

غيره: والمنسك والمنسك الموضع الذي تذبح فيه النسك، وقرئ بهما قوله تعالى: جعلنا منسكا هم ناسكوه .

Others said: 'And al-mansak and al-mansik is the place where the nusuk (sacrifices) are slaughtered.' And the verse 'Jalana mansakan hum yansukoonah' was recited with both.

ابن الأثير: قد تكرر ذكر المناسك والنسك والنسيكة في الحديث، - فالمناسك جمع منسك ومنسك، بفتح السين وكسرها، وهو المتعبد ويقع على المصدر والزمان والمكان، ثم سميت أمور الحج كلها مناسك.

Ibn Al-Athir said: 'The mention of al-manasik, al-nusk, and al-nasikah has been repeated in the Hadith. Al-manasik is the plural of mansak and mansik, with fath and kasr of the sin. It is the place of worship and can refer to the masdar, time, or place. Then all the affairs of Hajj were named manasik.'

والمنسك والمنسك: المذبح.

And al-mansak and al-mansik: the slaughterhouse/altar.

وقد نسك ينسك نسكا إذا ذبح.

And he slaughtered (nasaka) he slaughters (yansk) a slaughtering (nask) if he slaughtered.

ونسك الثوب: غسله بالماء وطهره، فهو منسوك؛ قال: ولا ينبت المرعى سباخ عراعر، ... ولو نسكت بالماء ستة أشهر

And he washed (nassaka) the garment: he washed it with water and purified it, so it is mansook. He said: 'And the pasture does not grow on salty, barren lands, ... even if I washed it with water for six months.'

وأرض ناسكة: خضراء حديثة المطر، فاعلة بمعنى مفعولة.

والنسيك: الذهب، والنسيك: الفضة؛ عن ثعلب.

ابن الأعرابي: النسك سبائك الفضة كل سبيكة منها نسيكة، وقيل للمتعبد ناسك لأنه خلص نفسه وصفاها لله تعالى من دنس الآثام كالسبيكة المخلصة من الخبث.

Ibn Al-A'rabi said: 'Al-nusk are bars of silver, each bar is a nasikah. And the worshipper is called nasik because he purified himself and refined himself for God Almighty from the filth of sins, like a bar refined from dross.'

وسئل ثعلب عن الناسك ما هو فقال: هو مأخوذ من النسيكة وهو سبيكة الفضة المصفاة كأنه خلص نفسه وصفاها لله عز وجل.

And Tha'lab was asked about al-nasik, what is it? He said: 'It is derived from al-nasikah, which is a refined bar of silver, as if he purified himself and refined himself for God, the Mighty and Majestic.'

والنسك، بضم النون وفتح السين: طائر؛ عن كراع.

And al-nusk, with dammah on the noon and fath on the sin: a bird; according to Kura'.
