The people turned towards such and such a place when they deviated to it; Jarir said: They marched, and though I was affected by them, ... I do not know for what reason they turned.

ورجل عاتك: لجوج لا ينتهي ولا ينثني عن أمر؛ وأنشد الأزهري هنا: نتبعهم خيلا لنا عواتكا

And a stubborn man: persistent, who does not stop and does not turn back from a matter; and Al-Azhari recited here: We follow them with our charging steeds.

عتكت القوس تعتك عتكا وعتوكا، وهي عاتك: احمرت من القدم وطول العهد.

The bow became old, it becomes old, 'atkan and 'utukan, and it is 'atik: it became red from age and long duration.

والعاتكة: القوس إذا قدمت واحمرت.

And a fragrant woman ('atikah): reddened by perfume, and it was said: she has a good scent, and the woman was named 'Atikah for her purity and redness.

وفي الحديث: قال، صلى الله عليه وسلم، يوم حنين: أنا ابن العواتك من سليم ؛ العواتك: جمع عاتكة، وأصل العاتكة المتضمخة بالطيب.

And in the Hadith: He said, peace be upon him, on the day of Hunayn: I am the son of the 'Awātik from Sulaym; Al-'Awātik: plural of 'Atikah, and the origin of 'Atikah is one smeared with perfume.

ونخلة عاتكة: لا تأتبر أي لا تقبل الإبار وهي الصلود تحمل الشيص.

And an unproductive palm tree ('atikah): does not accept pollination, meaning it does not accept fertilization, and it is barren, bearing only small, hard dates.

وأحمر عاتك: شديد الحمرة.
