غنينا زمانا بالتصعلك والغنى،
We lived for a time in destitution and in wealth,
فكلا سقاناه، بكأسيهما، الدهر فما زادنا بغيا على ذي قرابة غنانا، ولا أزرى بأحسابنا الفقر «1».
Both of which time gave us to drink from their cups, our wealth did not increase our insolence towards relatives, nor did poverty degrade our lineage.
أي عشنا زمانا.
Meaning, we lived for a time.
وتصعلكت الإبل: خرجت أوبارها وانجردت وطرحتها.
And the camels became bare: their wool came off and they became stripped and shed it.
ورجل مصعلك الرأس: مدوره.
And a man with a rounded head: meaning it is round.
ورجل مصعلك الرأس: صغيره؛
And a man with a small head: meaning it is small;
يخيل في المرعى لهن بشخصه، مصعلك أعلى قلة الرأس نقنق
It seems in the pasture to them by his person, a small rounded thing on the top of the head, making a sound
المصعلك، من الأسنمة، الذي كأنما حدرجت أعلاه حدرجة، كأنما صعلكت أسفله بيدك ثم مطلته صعدا أي رفعته على تلك الدملكة وتلك الاستدارة؛
The 'mis'alak', from the humps, is as if its top was rolled, as if its bottom was rounded by your hand then stretched upwards, meaning raised upon that swelling and that roundness;
قد تصعلكن في الربيع، وقد قررع جلد الفرائض الأقدام
They became thin in the spring, and the skin of their joints and feet was scraped bare
تصعلكن دققن وطار عفاؤها عنها، والفريضة موضع قدم الفارس.
They became thin, meaning they became slender and their hair flew off them, and Al-Faridah is the place of the rider's foot.
تصعلكت الإبل إذا دقت قوائمها من السمن.
The camels became thin when their legs became slender from fatness.
وصعلكها البقل وصعلك الثريدة: جعل لها رأسا، وقيل: رفع رأسها.

وكان عروة بن الورد يسمى: عروة الصعاليك لأنه كان يجمع الفقراء في حظيرة فيرزقهم مما يغنمه.
And Urwah ibn Al-Ward was called: Urwah of the Destitute because he used to gather the poor in a pen and provide for them from what he plundered.
