And al-Simakan: two fiery stars, one of them is al-Simak al-A'zal and the other is al-Simak al-Ramih, and it is said they are the two legs of Leo. The one that is from the moon's mansions is al-A'zal, by which the moon descends, and it is to the north. It is named A'zal because there is nothing before it among the stars like one who is unarmed, and it is said: it is named A'zal because when it rises, there is no wind or cold in its days, and it is free from them, and al-Ramih is not among the mansions.
وفي حديث ابن عمر: أنه نظر فإذا بالسماك فقال: قد دنا طلوع الفجر فأوتر بركعة ؛ السماك: نجم معروف، وهما سماكان: رامح وأعزل، والرامح لا نؤء له وهو إلى جهة الشمال، والأعزل من كواكب الأنواء وهو إلى جهة الجنوب، وهما في برج الميزان، وطلوع السماك الأعزل مع الفجر يكون في تشرين الأول.
And in the hadith of Ibn Umar: he looked and saw al-Simak, so he said: dawn is approaching, so pray Witr with one rak'ah; al-Simak: a known star, and they are two Simaks: Ramih and A'zal. Al-Ramih has no significant effect and is towards the north, and al-A'zal is from the stars of the seasons and is towards the south. They are in the sign of Libra, and the rising of al-Simak al-A'zal with dawn occurs in October.
وسمك البيت: سقفه.
And the samak of the house: its ceiling.
والسمك: السقف، وقيل: هو من أعلى البيت إلى أسفله.
And al-samak: the ceiling, and it was said: it is from the top of the house to its bottom.
والسمك: القامة من كل شيء بعيد طويل السمك؛
And al-samak: the stature of anything distant and tall.
نجائب من نتاج بني عزير، ... طوال السمك مفرعة نبالا
Swift she-camels from the offspring of Bani 'Uzzayr, ... tall of stature, reaching high like arrows.
اللهم رب المسمكات السبع ورب المدحيات السبع ؛ وهي المسموكات والمدحوات في قول العامة، وقول علي، رضي الله عنه، صواب.
O Allah, Lord of the seven raised things and Lord of the seven extended things; and they are al-masmukat and al-madhuwat in the common saying, and the saying of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, is correct.
والسماء مسموكة أي مرفوعة كالسمك.
And the sky is masmuka, meaning raised like the samak.
فالمسموكات السموات السبع، والمدحوات الأرضون.
So al-masmukat are the seven heavens, and al-madhuwat are the earths.
وروي عن علي، رضي الله عنه، أنه كان يقول: وسمك الله السماء سمكا رفعها.
And it was narrated from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, that he used to say: And Allah raised the sky with a raising.
وسمك الشيء سموكا: ارتفع.
And a thing ascended samukan: it became high.
والسامك: العالي المرتفع؛
And al-samik: the high, the elevated.

وسنام سامك وتامك: تار مرتفع عال.
And a samik and tamik hump: tall, raised, high.
ويقال: اسمك في الريم أي اصعد في الدرجة.
And it is said: ismakka fi al-raym, meaning ascend in rank.
والسميكاء: الحساس، والحساس هي الأرضة.
And al-samika': al-hassas, and al-hassas is the termite.
والمسماك: عمود من أعمدة الخباء، وفي المحكم: يكون في الخباء يسمك به البيت؛
And al-mismak: a pole from the poles of a tent, and in al-Muhkam: it is in the tent by which the structure is supported;
كأن رجليه مسماكان من عشر سقبان، لم يتقشر عنهما النجب
As if its legs were two mismakan from ten strong young camels, from which the skin had not peeled.
عنى بالرجلين الساقين، وفي الصحاح صقبان، بالصاد، وصقبان بدل من مسماكين.
He meant by the legs the shins, and in Al-Sihah it is sqban, with a sad, and sqban is a substitute for mismakayn.
