دَلَكْتُ الشَّيْءَ بِيَدِي أَدْلُكُهُ دَلْكًا
I rubbed the thing with my hand, rubbing it a rubbing.
دَلَكَ الشَّيْءَ يَدْلُكُهُ دَلْكًا مَرَسَهُ وَعَرَكَهُ
To rub something, to rub it a rubbing, is to knead and work it.
أَبِيتُ أَسْرِي، وَتَبَيَّتِي تَدْلُكِي ... وَجْهَكِ بِالْعَنْبَرِ وَالْمِسْكِ الذَّكِيِّ
I spend the night traveling, and your night is spent rubbing your face with ambergris and fragrant musk.
وَدَلَكْتُ السُّنْبُلَ حَتَّى انْفَرَكَ قِشْرُهُ عَنْ حَبِّهِ
And I rubbed the ear of corn until its husk separated from its grain.
وَالْمَدْلُوكُ: الْمَصْقُولُ
And the 'madlūk' is the polished one.
وَدَلَكْتُ الثَّوْبَ إِذَا مَصَصْتَهُ لِتَغْسِلَهُ
And you rub a garment if you suck it to wash it.
وَدَلَكَهُ الدَّهْرُ: حَنَّكَهُ وَعَلَّمَهُ
And time 'dalakahu': it seasoned him and taught him.
ابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ: الدَّلْكُ عُقَلَاءُ الرِّجَالِ، وَهُمُ الْحَنَكُ
Ibn al-A'rabi: 'al-dalk' refers to the wise men, they are the experienced ones.
وَرَجُلٌ دَلِيكٌ حَنِيكٌ: قَدْ مَارَسَ الْأُمُورَ وَعَرَفَهَا
And a man is 'dalīk' and 'ḥanīk': he has practiced affairs and knows them.
وَبَعِيرٌ مَدْلُوكٌ إِذَا عَاوَدَ الْأَسْفَارَ وَمَرَنَ عَلَيْهَا
And a camel is 'madlūk' if it has repeatedly undertaken journeys and become accustomed to them.
وَتَدَلَّكَ بِالشَّيْءِ: تَخَلَّقَ بِهِ
And he 'tadallaka' with a thing: he became imbued with it.
وَتَدَلَّكَ الرَّجُلُ أَيْ دَلَكَ جَسَدَهُ عِنْدَ الِاغْتِسَالِ
And the man 'tadallaka', meaning he rubbed his body when bathing.
وَإِنِّي أَظُنُّكُمْ، آلَ مُغِيرَةَ، ذَرْوَ النَّارِ؛ الدُّلُوكُ، بِالْفَتْحِ: اسْمُ الدَّوَاءِ أَوْ الشَّيْءِ الَّذِي يَتَدَلَّكُ بِهِ مِنْ الْغَسُولَاتِ كَالْعَدَسِ وَالْأَشْنَانِ وَالْأَشْيَاءِ الْمُطَيَّبَةِ
And I think you, O family of Mughira, are the spark of the fire; 'ad-dulūk', with the fatḥa: is the name of the medicine or the thing used for rubbing oneself with from washes like lentils, soapwort, and perfumed items.
وَالدَّلَاكَةُ: مَا حُلِبَ قَبْلَ الْفَيْقَةِ الْأُولَى وَقَبْلَ أَنْ تَجْتَمِعَ الْفَيْقَةُ الثَّانِيَةُ
And 'dalāka' is what is milked before the first milking and before the second milking is ready.
فَرَسٌ مَدْلُوكُ الْحَجَبَةِ: لَيْسَ لِحَجَبَتِهِ إِشْرَافٌ فَهِيَ مَلْسَاءُ مُسْتَوِيَةٌ
A horse with a 'madlūk' forelock: its forelock does not protrude, so it is smooth and even.
وَالدَّلِيكُ: طَعَامٌ يُتَّخَذُ مِنَ الزُّبْدِ وَاللَّبَنِ شِبْهُ الثَّرِيدِ
And 'dalīk' is a food made from butter and milk, resembling thareed.
وَالدَّلِيكُ: التُّرَابُ الَّذِي تُسَفِّيهِ الرِّيَاحُ
And 'dalīk' is the dust that the winds blow away.
وَدَلَكَتِ الشَّمْسُ تَدْلُكُ دُلُوكًا: غَرَبَتْ، وَقِيلَ اصْفَرَّتْ وَمَالَتْ لِلْغُرُوبِ
And the sun 'dalakat', 'tadluk' a 'dulūk': it set, and it was said it turned yellow and inclined towards setting.
أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ
Establish prayer from the declining of the sun until the darkness of the night.
وَقَدْ دَلَكَتْ: زَالَتْ عَنْ كَبِدِ السَّمَاءِ
And it has declined: it has moved from the zenith of the sky.
مَا تَدْلُكُ الشَّمْسُ إِلَّا حِذْوَ مَنْكِبِهِ ... فِي حَوْمَةٍ، دُونَهَا الْهَامَاتُ وَالْقَصَرُ
The sun does not decline except level with its shoulder... in an expanse, beyond which are heads and towers.
وَقَدْ دَلَكَتْ بِرَاحٍ وَبَرَاحٍ أَيْ قَدْ مَالَتْ لِلزَّوَالِ
And it has declined 'birāḥin wa-barāḥin', meaning it has inclined towards setting.
وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ الْعَرَبَ يَذْهَبُونَ بِالدُّلُوكِ إِلَى غَيَابِ الشَّمْسِ
And I have seen the Arabs take 'ad-dulūk' to mean the setting of the sun.
وَالدَّلِيكُ: ثَمَرُ الْوَرْدِ يُحْمَرُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ كَالْبُسْرِ وَيَنْضَجُ فَيَحْلُو فَيُؤْكَلُ
And 'dalīk' is the fruit of the rose, which reddens until it is like unripe dates and ripens, becoming sweet and edible.
وَلِلْوَرْدِ عِنْدَنَا دَلِيكٌ عَجِيبٌ كَأَنَّهُ الْبُسْرُ كِبَرًا وَحُمْرَةً حُلْوٌ لَذِيذٌ كَأَنَّهُ رُطْبٌ يَتَهَادَى
And the rose has with us a wondrous 'dalīk', like unripe dates in size and redness, sweet and delicious, like ripe dates being offered.
وَالدَّلِيكُ: نَبَاتٌ، وَاحِدَتُهُ دَلِيكَةٌ
And 'dalīk' is a plant, its singular is 'dalīka'.
وَدَلَكْتُ الْأَرْضَ: أَكَلْتُ
And I 'dalaktu' the land: I ate.
وَرَجُلٌ مَدْلُوكٌ: أُلِحَّ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ
And a man is 'madlūk': he is pressed hard in asking.
وَدَلَكَ الرَّجُلُ حَقَّهُ: مَاطَلَهُ
And the man 'dalaka' his right: he delayed paying it.
وَدَلَكَ الرَّجُلُ غَرِيمَهُ أَيْ مَاطَلَهُ
And the man 'dalaka' his debtor, meaning he delayed him.
أَيُدَالِكُ الرَّجُلُ امْرَأَتَهُ؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ إِذَا كَانَ مُلْفِجًا
Does a man 'yudālik' his wife? He said: Yes, if he is delaying (her dower).
وَكُلُّ مُمَاطِلٍ، فَهُوَ مُدَالِكٌ
And every procrastinator is a 'mudālik'.
فَلَا تَعْجَلْ عَلَيَّ وَلَا تُبْصِنِي، ... وَدَالِكْنِي، فَإِنِّي ذُو دَلَالٍ
So do not rush me, nor scrutinize me, ... and deal with me patiently, for I am one who is indulged.
وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمُ: الْمُدَالِكَةُ الْإِلْحَاحُ فِي التَّقَاضِي، وَكَذَلِكَ الْمُعَارَكَةُ
And some said: 'al-mudālaka' is insistence in demanding payment, and likewise 'al-mu'āraka'.
