And al-mawbiq is a derivative of the pattern maf'al from the root, like al-maw'id is from wa'ada ya'idu. And from it is the saying of Allah the Almighty: 'And We made between them a barrier.' And there is another pronunciation: wa baqa yūbiq waqan: and awbaqahu: he destroyed him.
قال الفراء في قوله: وجعلنا بينهم موبقا ؛ يقول جعلنا تواصلهم في الدنيا موبقا أي مهلكا لهم في الآخرة.
Al-Farra' said regarding His saying: 'And We made between them a barrier'; he says, 'We made their connection in this world a barrier, meaning a destroyer for them in the hereafter.'
وقال ابن الأعرابي: موبقا أي حاجزا؛ وكل حاجز بين شيئين فهو موبق؛
And Ibn al-A'rabi said: mawbiqan meaning a barrier; and every barrier between two things is a mawbiq;
وقال أبو عبيد: الموبق الموعد في قوله وجعلنا بينهم موبقا ؛ واحتج بقوله: وحاد شرورى والستار، فلم يدع ... تعارا له والواديين بموبق معناه بموعد.
And Abu Ubaid said: Al-mawbiq is the appointment in His saying, 'And We made between them a barrier'; and he cited the saying: 'And he turned away from Shurayra and the curtain, and left no... meeting for him between the two valleys at a mawbiq, meaning at an appointment.'
وحكى ابن بري عن السيرافي قال: أي جعلنا تواصلهم في الدنيا مهلكا لهم في الآخرة، فبينهم على هذا مفعول أول لجعلنا لا ظرف،
And Ibn al-Bari narrated from Al-Sirafi, he said: 'Meaning, We made their connection in this world a destroyer for them in the hereafter, so 'between them' in this case is the first object of 'We made' and not an adverb of place.'
وقال أبو عبيد: موبقا موعدا، فبينهم على هذا ظرف.
And Abu Ubaid said: mawbiqan meaning an appointment, so 'between them' in this case is an adverb of place.
الفراء: يقال أوبقت فلانا ذنوبه أي أهلكته فوبق يوبق وبقا وموبقا إذا هلك.
Al-Farra': It is said, 'His sins destroyed him,' meaning they destroyed him, so he perished, perishing, perishing, and mawbiqan if he perished.
وفي نوادر الأعراب: وبقت الإبل في الطين إذا وحلت فنشبت فيه.
And in the rare sayings of the Arabs: The camels perished in the mud when they became bogged down and stuck in it.
ووبق في دينه إذا نشب فيه.
And he perished in his debt if he became entangled in it.
وفي حديث الصراط: ومنهم الموبق بذنوبه أي المهلك.
And in the Hadith of the Sirat: 'And among them is the one destroyed by his sins,' meaning the one who is destroyed.
يقال: أوبقه غيره، فهو موبق.
It is said: Another destroyed him, so he is destroyed.
وفي الحديث: ولو فعل الموبقات أي الذنوب المهلكات.
And in the Hadith: 'And if he committed the mawbiqat,' meaning the destroying sins.
وفي حديث علي: فمنهم الغرق الوبق.
And in the saying of Ali: 'So among them is the perishing drowning.'
والموبق: المحبس. وقد أوبقه أي حبسه.
And al-mawbiq: the prison. And he imprisoned him, meaning he confined him.
وقوله تعالى: أو يوبقهن بما كسبوا ، أي يحبسهن، يعني الفلك وركبانها، فيهلكوا فرقا.
And His saying the Almighty: 'Or He destroys them for what they have earned,' meaning He confines them, referring to the ships and their passengers, so they perish in terror.
