And in the hadith of his letter to Khosrow: 'When he tore it, he prayed against them that they be torn to every tornness.' Tearing means ripping and cutting, and by their tearing he meant their dispersion, the demise of their kingdom, and the cutting off of their lineage.

والمزقة: القطعة من الثوب.

And Al-Mazqah: the piece from the garment.

وثوب مزيق ومزق الأخيرة على النسب.

And a torn garment, and 'maziq' and 'maziq' (last one) are by attribution.

وحكى اللحياني: ثوب أمزاق ومزق.

And Al-Lihyani narrated: 'A garment of torn pieces and torn.'

ويقال: ثوب مزيق ممزوق متمزق وممزق، وسحاب مزق على التشبيه كما قالوا كسف.

And it is said: a torn garment, ripped, being torn, and torn, and torn clouds by analogy, as they said 'kasaf' (clumps).

والمزق: القطع من الثوب الممزوق، والقطعة منها مزقة.

And Al-Mazaq: the pieces from the torn garment, and the piece from it is a mazqah.

الليث: يقال صار الثوب مزقا أي قطعا، قال: ولا يكادون يقولون مزقة للقطعة الواحدة، وكذلك مزق السحاب قطعه.

Al-Layth said: It is said the garment became mazqa, meaning pieces, he said: 'And they hardly say mazqah for a single piece, and likewise the tearing of clouds means its pieces.'

ومزق العرض: شتمه.

And to tear honor: to insult him.

ومزق عرضه يمزقه مزقا: كهرده.

And to tear his honor, he tears it, mazqa: to humiliate him.

وناقة مزاق، بكسر الميم، ونزاق؛ عن يعقوب: سريعة جدا يكاد يتمزق عنها جلدها من نجائها، وزاد في التهذيب: ناقة شوشاة مزاق سريعة: قال الليث: سميت مزاقا لأن جلدها يكاد يتمزق عنها من سرعتها؛ وأنشد:

And a mazzaq she-camel, with a kasra on the mim, and nazzaq; from Ya'qub: very fast, her skin almost tears off from her speed, and in Al-Tahdhib it was added: a swift, fast mazzaq she-camel: Al-Layth said: she is named mazzaq because her skin almost tears off from her speed; and he recited:

فجاء بشوشاة مزاق، ترى بها ... ندوبا من الأنساع: فذا وتوأما

So he came with a swift, fast one, you see on her ... scars from the girths: this one and a twin.

وقال غيره: فرس مزاق سريعة خفيفة؛ قال ذو الرمة:

And others said: a swift, light mazzaq horse; Dhu al-Rummah said:

أفاؤوا كل شاذبة مزاق ... براها القود، واكتست اقورارا

They brought back every lean, swift one ... the leading has worn her out, and she has become plump.

وفي النوادر: مازقت فلانا ونازقته منازقة أي سابقته في العدو.

And in Al-Nawadir: I raced so-and-so and competed with him in a race, meaning I outran him in the run.

ومزيقياء: لقب عمرو بن عامر بن مالك ملك من ملوك اليمن جد الأنصار، قيل: إنه كان يمزق كل يوم حلة فيخلعها على أصحابه، وقيل: إنه كان يلبس كل يوم حلتين فيمزقهما بالعشي ويكره أن يعود فيهما ويأنف أن يلبسهما أحد غيره؛ وقيل، سمي بذلك لأنه كان يلبس كل يوم ثوبا، فإذا أمسى مزقه ووهبه؛ وقال:

And Maziqiya: the title of Amr bin Amir bin Malik, a king of Yemen, the ancestor of the Ansar. It was said: he used to tear a garment every day and give it to his companions, and it was said: he used to wear two garments every day and tear them in the evening, disliking to wear them again and disdaining that anyone else wear them; and it was said, he was named thus because he used to wear a garment every day, and when evening came, he would tear it and give it away; and he said:

أنا ابن مزيقيا عمرو، وجدي ... أبوه عامر، ماء السماء

I am the son of Maziqiya Amr, and my grandfather ... his father was Amir, the water of the sky.

وفي حديث ابن عمر: أن طائرا مزق عليه أي ذرق ورمى بسلحه عليه؛ مزق الطائر بسلحه يمزق ويمزق مزقا: رمى بذرقه.

And in the hadith of Ibn Umar: that a bird defecated on him, meaning it excreted and threw its dung on him; the bird defecated its dung, it defecates and defecates, mazqa: it threw its droppings.

والمزقة: طائر، وليس بثبت.

And Al-Mazqah: a bird, but it is not confirmed.

والممزق: لقب شاعر من عبد القيس، بكسر الزاي وكان الفراء يفتحها: وإنما لقب بذلك لقوله:

And Al-Mamzaq: a nickname of a poet from Abd al-Qays, with a kasra on the zay, and Al-Farra used to open it: he was only nicknamed thus for his saying:

فإن كنت مأكولا، فكن خير آكل، ... وإلا فأدركني، ولما أمزق

If you are to be eaten, then be the best eater, ... otherwise, save me, and when I am torn apart.

قال ابن بري: وحكي المفضل الضبي عن أحمد اللغوي أن الممزق العبدي سمي بذلك لقوله:

Ibn al-Bari said: And Al-Mufaddal al-Dabbi narrated from Ahmad al-Lughawi that Al-Mamzaq al-Abdi was named thus for his saying:

فمن مبلغ النعمان أن ابن أخته، ... على العين، يعتاد الصفا ويمزق

So who will inform Al-Nu'man that his sister's son, ... on the eye, is accustomed to joy and tears.

ومعنى يمزق يغني.

And the meaning of 'yamzuqu' is 'yughanni' (sings).

قال: وهذا يقوي قول الجوهري في كسر الزاي في الممزق، إلا أن المعروف في هذا البيت يمرق، بالراء.

He said: And this strengthens Al-Jawhari's opinion of the kasra on the zay in Al-Mamzaq, except that what is known in this verse is 'yamruqu', with an ra.

والتمريق، بالراء: الغناء فلا حجة فيه على هذا لأن الزاي فيه تصحيف، وقال الآمدي: الممزق، بالفتح، هو شأس بن نهار العبدي، سمي بذلك لقوله:

And Al-Tamriq, with an ra: singing, so there is no argument for this because the zay in it is a misspelling, and Al-Amidi said: Al-Mamzaq, with a fatha, is Shas bin Nahar al-Abdi, he was named thus for his saying:

فإن كنت مأكولا، فكن خيرا آكل

If you are to be eaten, then be the best eater.

وأما الممزق، بكسر الزاي، فهو الممزق الحضرمي، وهو متأخر؛ وكان ولده يقال له المخزق لقوله:

As for Al-Mamzaq, with a kasra on the zay, it is Al-Mamzaq al-Hadrami, and he is later; and his son was called Al-Makhzaq for his saying:

أنا المخزق أعراض اللئام، كما ... كان الممزق أعراض اللئام أبي

I am the one who tears apart the honor of the base, just as ... my father Al-Mamzaq tore apart the honor of the base.

وهجا الممزق أبو الشمقمق فقال:

And Abu Al-Shamqamaq satirized Al-Mamzaq, so he said:

كنت الممزق مرة، ... فاليوم قد صرت الممزق لما جريت مع الضلال، ... غرقت في بحر الشمقمق

I was Al-Mamzaq once, ... but today I have become Al-Mamzaq when you ran with the misguided, ... you drowned in the sea of Al-Shamqamaq.

والممزق أيضا: مصدر كالتمزيق، ومنه قوله تعالى: ومزقناهم كل ممزق.

And Al-Mamzaq is also: a masdar like Al-Tamziq, and from it is His saying, the Almighty: 'And We tore them to pieces.'
