Al-Farra' said: 'The plural is munjaniqat', and Sibawayh said: 'It is fa'alil with the mim from the word itself being original, because they say for the plural majaniq, and for the diminutive mujayniq'.

ولأنها لو كانت زائدة والنون زائدة لاجتمعت زائدتان في أول الاسم، وهذا لا يكون في الأسماء ولا الصفات التي ليست على الأفعال المزيدة

And because if the mim were extra and the nun were extra, two extra letters would meet at the beginning of the noun, and this does not occur in nouns nor in adjectives that are not derived from augmented verbs.

ولو جعلت النون من نفس الحرف صار الاسم رباعيا والزيادات لا تلحق ببنات الأربعة أولا إلا الأسماء الجارية على أفعالها نحو مدحرج

And if the nun were made part of the root, the noun would become quadriliteral, and augmentations do not attach to quadriliteral roots initially except for nouns that follow the pattern of their verbs, like mudahraj.

And in the narration of Al-Hajjaj: 'He set up a mangonel over the Kaaba and assigned two operators to it, and one of the operators said when launching: 'It is swift like a noble camel... I prepared it for the ancient mosque'.
