ثم سمي الغراب غاقا فيقال: سمعت صوت الغاق
Then the crow was named ghāq, so it is said: 'I heard the sound of the ghāq'.
وربما سمي الغراب به لصوته
And sometimes the crow is named by it (the sound) because of its cry.
ولو ترى، إذ جبتي من طاق، ... ولمتي مثل جناح غاق
And if you saw, when my tunic was from a basket, ... my hair like the wing of a crow.
إذا قلت حكاية صوت الغراب غاق غاق فكأنك قلت بعدا بعدا وفراقا فراقا
If you say the imitation of the crow's sound 'ghaq ghāq', it is as if you said 'far away, far away' and 'separation, separation'.
وإذا قلت غاق غاق فكأنك قلت البعد البعد
And if you say 'ghāq ghāq', it is as if you said 'the distance, the distance'.
فصار التنوين علم التنكير وتركه علم التعريف
So the nunation became a sign of indefiniteness, and leaving it off became a sign of definiteness.
والوغيق: صوت قنب الدابة وهو وعاء جردانه؛ عن اللحياني
And al-waghīq: the sound of the animal's sheath, which is the container of its testicles; from Al-Lihyānī.
كأنه مقلوب عن الغويق أو لغة فيه
As if it were an inversion of al-ghawīq or a dialectal variant of it.
