And know that it is from the strike with which I struck you last year.
غفقته بالسوط أغفقه ومتنته بالسوط أمتنه وهو أشد من الغفق
I struck him with the whip, I struck him; and I strengthened him with the whip, I strengthened him, and it is more severe than al-ghafq.
والغفق: الهجوم على الشيء والأوب من الغيبة فجأة
And al-ghafq: attacking something and returning from absence suddenly.

والغفق: كثرة الشرب، غفق يغفق غفقا

والغفق من صفة الورد؛ قال رؤبة: صاحب غارات من الورد الغفق
And al-ghafq is a description of watering; Ru'ba said: A possessor of raids from the frequent watering.
وقيل: الغفق أن ترد الإبل كل ساعة
And it was said: Al-ghafq is for the camels to drink every hour.
والتغفيق: النوم وأنت تسمع حديث القوم
And al-taghfiqu: sleeping while you hear the people's talk.
ويقال: غفقوا السليم تغفيقا إذا عالجوه وسهدوه
And it is said: They treated the snake (suleem) with taghfiqun when they treated it and kept it awake.
وجملة التغفيق نوم في أرق
And the essence of al-taghfiqu is sleep amidst restlessness.
أبو عمرو: الغيفقة الإهراق، وكذلك الدغرقة
Abu Amr: Al-ghayfaqah is spilling, and so is al-dagharqah.
أبو عمرو: غفق وعفق إذا خرجت منه ريح
Abu Amr: Ghafqa and 'afaqah if wind comes out of it.
والمنغفق: المنصرف، وقال الأصعمي: المنعطف
And al-munghafiqu: the departing one, and Al-Asma'i said: the turning one.
