And in the hadith of Qatadah: the 'anaq al-ard is among the predators.
ويقال في المثل: لقي عناق الأرض، وأذني عناق أي داهية
And it is said in the proverb: 'He met the 'anaq al-ard,' and 'the ears of an 'anaq,' meaning a calamity.
والعناق: الداهية والخيبة
And 'al-'anaq: the calamity and the failure.
أمن ترجيع قارية تركتم ... سباياكم، وأبتم بالعناق؟
Did you leave your captives because of the cry of a qariyah, and return with failure?
قال علي بن حمزة: العناق في البيت المنكر أي وأبتم بأمر منكر.
Ali ibn Hamzah said: 'al-'anaq in the verse means 'and you returned with a reprehensible matter.'
وجاء بأذني عناق الأرض أي بالكذب الفاحش أو بالخيبة
And he came with the ears of the 'anaq al-ard, meaning with gross falsehood or with failure.
إذا تمطين على القياقي، ... لاقين منه أذني عناق
When you stretch out on the plains, you will meet from him the ears of an 'anaq (meaning hardship).
ويقال: رجع فلان بالعناق إذا رجع خائبا، يوضع العناق موضع الخيبة.
And it is said: 'So-and-so returned with 'al-'anaq' if he returned defeated; 'al-'anaq' is used in place of failure.

والعنقاء: الداهية
And 'al-'anqa': the calamity.
يحملن عنقاء وعنقفيرا، ... وأم خشاف وخنشفيرا، والدلو والديلم والزفيرا وكلهن دواه
They carry 'anqa' and 'unqafira, and Umm Khushaf and Khunshafira, and the Dipper, and al-Daylam, and al-Zafir, and all of them are calamities.
والعنقاء: طائر ضخم ليس بالعقاب
And 'al-'anqa': a huge bird, not an eagle.
يقال: إنها طائر عظيم لا ترى إلا في الدهور ثم كثر ذلك حتى سموا الداهية عنقاء مغربا ومغربة
It is said: it is a great bird seen only in ages, then it became common to call a calamity 'anqa' mughriban and mughribatan.
ولولا سليمان الخليفة، حلقت ... به، من يد الحجاج، عنقاء مغرب
And were it not for Sulayman the Caliph, an 'anqa' mughrib would have carried him off from the hand of al-Hajjaj.
وقيل: سميت عنقاء لأنه كان في عنقها بياض كالطوق
And it is said: it was named 'anqa' because it had a white mark on its neck like a collar.
وقال كراع: العنقاء فيما يزعمون طائر يكون عند مغرب الشمس
And Kura' said: 'al-'anqa', according to their claims, is a bird found near the sunset.
وقيل في قوله تعالى؛ طيرا أبابيل؛ هي عنقاء مغربة.
And it is said regarding the Almighty's saying: 'birds in flocks' - they are 'anqa' mughrabah.
طارت بهم العنقاء المغرب
The 'anqa' al-maghrib carried them off.
فسميت عنقاء مغربا، لأنها تغرب بكل ما أخذته
So it was named 'anqa' mughriban, because it disappeared with everything it took.
ويقال: ألوت به العنقاء المغرب، وطارت به العنقاء.
And it is said: 'The 'anqa' al-maghrib exhausted him,' and 'the 'anqa' carried him off.'
والعنقاء: العقاب
And 'al-'anqa': the eagle.
والعنقاء: لقب رجل من العرب، واسمه ثعلبة بن عمرو.
And 'al-'anqa': a nickname for a man from the Arabs, whose name is Tha'labah ibn 'Amr.
والتعانيق: موضع
And 'al-Ta'aniq: a place.
وأقفر، من سلمى، التعانيق فالثقل
And 'al-Ta'aniq became desolate, from Salma, and then al-Thaqal.

And 'a'naqat al-Thurayya when it sets.
كأني، حين أعنقت الثريا، ... سقيت الراح أو سما مدوفا
It is as if I, when the Pleiades set, was given wine or mixed poison.
وأعنقت النجوم إذا تقدمت للمغيب.
And the stars 'a'naqat when they advance towards setting.
والمعنق: السابق، يقال: جاء الفرس معنقا، ودابة معناق وقد أعنق
And 'al-Mu'niq: the leader; it is said: the horse came leading, and a beast 'ma'naq' and it has 'a'naqa.
في رأس خلقاء من عنقاء مشرفة، ... لا يبتغى دونها سهل ولا جبل
On the head of a barren peak, high from the 'anqa', no plain or mountain is sought below it.
وقد عانقه إذا جعل يديه على عنقه وضمه إلى نفسه وتعانقا واعتنقا، فهو عنيقه
And he embraced him when he put his hands around his neck and drew him close to himself, and they embraced and clung to each other, so he is his 'aniq.
وبات خيال طيفك لي عنيقا، ... إلى أن حيعل الداعي الفلاحا
