Ibn al-Athīr said: The 'Amaliqah are the giants who were in the Levant from the remnants of the people of 'Ad. He said: And one who deceives and tricks people is called 'imlāq.
قال: والعملقة التعميق في الكلام، فشبه القصاص بهم لما في بعضهم من الكبر والاستطالة على الناس، أو بالذين يخدعونهم بكلامهم وهو أشبه.
He said: And al-'amlaqah is the elaboration in speech, so the storytellers were likened to them because of the arrogance and overbearing nature some of them have towards people, or to those who deceive them with their words, which is more fitting.
الجوهري: العماليق والعمالقة قوم من ولد عمليق بن لاوذ بن إرم بن سام بن نوح، وهم أمم تفرقوا في البلاد.
Al-Jawharī said: Al-'amālīq and al-'amāliqah are a people from the offspring of 'Imlaq son of Lāwudh son of Iram son of Shem son of Noah, and they are nations who dispersed in the lands.
