ما جاءك عن أصحاب محمد فخذه ودع ما يقول هؤلاء الصعافقة ؛ أراد أن هؤلاء ليس عندهم فقه ولا علم بمنزلة أولئك التجار الذين ليس لهم رؤوس أموال؛
Whatever comes to you from the Companions of Muhammad, take it, and leave what these Al-Sa'afiqah say; he meant that these people lack jurisprudence and knowledge, unlike those merchants who have no capital.
أنه سئل عن رجل أفطر يوما من رمضان فقال: ما تقول فيه الصعافقة؟
He was asked about a man who broke his fast for a day in Ramadan, and he said: What do Al-Sa'afiqah say about it?
وقال أعرابي ما هؤلاء الصعافقة حولك؟
And a Bedouin said: What are these Al-Sa'afiqah around you?
والصعفوق: اللئيم من الرجال، والصعافقة: رذالة الناس.
And Al-Sa'fūq: is the ignoble among men, and Al-Sa'afiqah: is the baseness of people.
والصعافقة: قوم كان آباؤهم عبيدا فاستعربوا، وقيل: هم قوم باليمامة من بقايا الأمم الخالية ضلت أنسابهم، واحدهم صعفقي، وقيل: هم خول هناك، ويقال لهم بنو صعفوق وآل صعفوق؛
And Al-Sa'afiqah: are people whose fathers were slaves and then Arabized. It was said: they are a people in Al-Yamamah from the remnants of past nations whose lineage has been lost, one of them is Sa'faqiyy. It was said: they are Khawl there, and they are called Banu Sa'fūq and Al Sa'fūq;
من آل صعفوق وأتباع أخر، ... من طامعين لا ينالون الغمر
From Al Sa'fūq and other followers, ... from those who covet but do not attain the bounty
كل ما جاء على فعلول فهو مضموم الأول مثل زنبور وبهلول وعمروس وما أشبه ذلك، إلا حرفا جاء نادرا وهو بنو صعفوق لخول باليمامة، وبعضهم يقول صعفوق، بالضم؛
Everything that comes on the pattern 'fa'alūl' has the first letter dhamma-ed, like zunbūr, bahlūl, 'amrūs, and the like, except for a rare word which is Banu Sa'fūq for Khawl in Al-Yamamah, and some of them say Sa'fūq, with dhamma;
جاء على فعلول صعفوق وصعقول لضرب من الكمأة وبعكوكة الوادي لجانبه؛

A day we measured, and the Mighty One measured, ... and the horses returned and fulfilled their desire from the weaklings (Al-Sa'afīq), and we reached the goal. He meant by Al-Sa'afīq that they are weak, lacking courage, weapons, or strength to fight us.
