الشهيق: أقبح الأصوات
The gasping sound: the ugliest of sounds.
شهق وشهق يشهق ويشهق شهيقا وشهاقا، وبعضهم يقول شهوقا: ردد البكاء في صدره.
He gasped and gasped, he gasps and gasps, a gasping and a gasping, and some of them say 'shahouqan': repeating the crying in his chest.
الجوهري: شهق يشهق ارتفع.
Al-Jawhari said: 'shahq' (to rise) ascends.
وشهيق الحمار: آخر صوته، وزفيره أوله، وقيل: شهيق الحمار نهيقه.
And the donkey's bray: the last of its sound, and its exhalation is the first, and it is said: the donkey's bray is its braying.
ويقال: الشهيق رد النفس والزفير إخراجه.
And it is said: 'ash-shahīq' is the intake of breath and 'az-zafīr' is its expulsion.
الليث: الشهيق ضد الزفير، والزفير إخراج النفس؛
Al-Layth said: 'ash-shahīq' is the opposite of 'az-zafīr', and 'az-zafīr' is the expulsion of breath;
قال الله عز وجل في صفة أهل النار: لهم فيها زفير وشهيق ؛
Allah the Almighty said in description of the people of Hellfire: They shall have therein groaning and gasping;
قال الزجاج: الزفير والشهيق من أصوات المكروبين، قال: والزفير من شديد الأنين وقبيحه، والشهيق الأنين الشديد المرتفع جدا، قال: وزعم بعض أهل اللغة من البصريين والكوفيين أن الزفير بمنزلة ابتداء صوت الحمار من النهيق، والشهيق بمنزلة آخر صوته في الشهيق، وروي عن الربيع في قوله لهم فيها زفير وشهيق ، قال: الزفير في الحلق والشهيق في الصدر.
Al-Zajjaj said: 'Az-zafīr' and 'ash-shahīq' are among the sounds of the distressed, he said: 'Az-zafīr' is from intense and ugly groaning, and 'ash-shahīq' is the intense, very high-pitched groaning, he said: And some linguists from Basra and Kufa claimed that 'az-zafīr' is like the beginning of a donkey's sound from braying, and 'ash-shahīq' is like the end of its sound in gasping, and it was narrated from Ar-Rabi' regarding His saying 'They shall have therein groaning and gasping', he said: 'Az-zafīr' is in the throat and 'ash-shahīq' is in the chest.
ورجل ذو شاهق: شديد الغضب.
And a man with 'shahīq': intensely angry.
ويقال للرجل إذا اشتد غضبه: إنه لذو شاهق وأنه لذو صاهل.
And it is said of a man when his anger intensifies: he is indeed 'dhū shahīq' and he is indeed 'dhū ṣāhil'.
وفحل ذو شاهق وذو صاهل إذا هاج وصال فسمعت له صوتا يخرج من جوفه.
And a stallion with 'shahīq' and 'ṣāhil' when it becomes aroused and agitated, and you hear a sound coming from its core.
الأصمعي: يقال شهقت وشهقت عين الناظر عليه إذا أصابه بعين؛
Al-Asma'i said: It is said 'shahqtu' and 'shahqat 'ayn an-nāẓir 'alayhi' if he afflicted him with the evil eye;
وقال مزاحم العقيلي: إذا شهقت عين عليه، عزوته ... لغير أبيه، أو تسنيت راقيا
And Muzahim Al-'Uqayli said: If an eye gasps upon him, I attribute him... to someone other than his father, or I ascend as a charmer.
أخبر أنه إذا فتح إنسان عينه عليه فخشيت أن يصيبه بعينه، قلت: هو هجين لأرد عين الناظر عنه وإعجابه به.
He informed that if a person opens his eye upon him and you fear he will be afflicted by the evil eye, you say: He is a mixed breed, to turn away the gazer's eye from him and his admiration for him.
والشهقة: كالصيحة، يقال: شهق فلان وشهق شهقة فمات.
And 'ash-shahqah': is like a cry, it is said: So-and-so gasped, and gasped a gasp and died.
والتشهاق: الشهيق؛
And 'at-tashhaq': is the gasping;
وقال حنظلة بن شرقي وكنيته أبو الطمحان: بضرب يزيل الهام عن سكناته، ... وطعن كتشهاق العفا [العفا] هم بالنهق
And Hanzalah bin Sharqi, whose kunya is Abu Al-Tumhan, said: With strikes that remove heads from their resting places, ... and stabs like the gasping of the afflicted who are intent on braying.
ويقال: ضحك تشهاق؛
And it is said: a 'tashhaq' laughter;
قال ابن ميادة: تقول خود ذات طرف براق، ... مزاحة تقطع هم المشتاق، ذات أقاويل وضحك تشهاق، ... هلا اشتريت حنطة بالرستاق، سمراء مما درس ابن مخراق؟
Ibn Mayyadah said: A maiden with sparkling eyes says, ... joking, cutting off the worries of the longing one, possessing sayings and 'tashhaq' laughter, ... why don't you buy wheat from Ar-Rustaq, a dark-skinned one from what Ibn Makhrāq has studied?
والشاهق: الجبل المرتفع.
And 'ash-shāhiq': the elevated mountain.
وجبل شاهق: طويل عال، وقد شهق شهوقا.
And a tall mountain: long and high, and it has ascended a great ascent.
وكل ما رفع من بناء أو غيره وطال فهو شاهق، وقد شهق؛
And everything that is raised from a building or otherwise and is tall is 'shāhiq', and it has ascended;
ومنه يقال: شهق يشهق إذا تنفس تنفسا، ومنه الجبل الشاهق.
And from this it is said: 'shahq' (to breathe) he breathes, meaning to inhale, and from this is the tall mountain.
وجبل شاهق: ممتنع طولا، والجمع شواهق.
And a tall mountain: impregnable in height, and the plural is 'shawāhiq'.
وفي حديث بدء الوحي: ليتردى من رؤوس الجبال أي شواهق الجبال أي عواليها.
And in the hadith of the beginning of revelation: to throw himself from the tops of the mountains, meaning the high places of the mountains, meaning their lofty peaks.
