وأنشد طلحة قصيدة فما زال شانقا راحلته حتى كتبت له
And Talha recited a poem, and he kept pulling his mount's reins until I wrote for him.
إن أشنق لها خرم أي إن بالع في إشناقها خرم أنفها

فكان رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أول طالع فأشرع ناقته فشربت وشنق لها

And their being bound to their necks.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: الإشناق أن ترفع يده بالغل إلى عنقه
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-ishnaq is to raise his hand with the chain to his neck.
أشنقت الشيء وشنقته إذا علقته
I hung the thing and he hung it, if you suspended it.
شنقت بها معابل مرهفات، مسالات الأغرة كالقراط
He attached sharp arrows to it, piercing the prey like a torch.
شنقت جعلت الوتر في النبل
He attached the string to the arrow.

بأشناق الديات إلى الكمول
With the ashnaq of the blood-wits until completion.
والشناق ما بين الفريضتين
And the shinaq is what is between the two fixed quotas.
أشناق الديات: اختلاف أجناسها نحو بنات المخاض وبنات اللبون والحقاق والجذاع، كل جنس منها شنق
Ashnaq of the blood-wits: their different types, such as bint makhad, bint labun, huqqah, and jadh'ah, each type is a shanq.
والشنق ما لم تجب فيه الفريضة؛ يريد ما بين خمس إلى خمس وعشرين
And the shanq is what the fixed quota has not become obligatory for; meaning what is between five and twenty-five.
