Rather, the correct narration is from Qabath bin Ashyam, who was asked: Are you older or the Messenger of God? He said: He is older than me, and I am older than him in birth, and I saw the elephant's excrement, green and well-formed.
And it is possible that what Al-Harawi and Al-Zamakhshari narrated is also correct, and that when Mu'awiyah was asked about it, he said: I remember its excrement, and he meant by that to evoke past wrongs and what befell people from him and what calamities befell him, just as people speak of the errors of those who came before and the slips of those who passed: these are Zayd's mistakes and these are 'Amr's stumbles, and they might say in their expressions: We are still dealing with the mistakes of so-and-so, or this is from the mistakes of so-and-so, even if there is no actual excrement, and God knows best.
