Tha'lab said: They used to say there is no torment and no hereafter, so the torment they disbelieved in befell them.

وأحاقه الله به: أنزله

And Allah caused it to befall him: He made it descend upon him.

وقيل: حاق بهم العذاب أي أحاط بهم ونزل كأنه وجب عليهم

And it was said: The torment befell them, meaning it surrounded them and descended as if it was incumbent upon them.

أي أحاط بهم العذاب الذي هو جزاء ما كانوا يستهزئون كما تقول أحاط بفلان عمله وأهلكه كسبه أي أهلكه جزاء كسبه

Meaning the torment, which is the recompense for what they used to mock, surrounded them, just as you say his deed surrounded a person and his earnings destroyed him, meaning destroyed him as recompense for his earnings.

قال الأزهري: جعل أبو إسحق حاق بمعنى أحاط، قال: وأراه أخذه من الحوق وهو ما استدار بالكمرة

Al-Azhari said: Abu Ishaq made 'haqa' mean 'to surround', he said: And I think he took it from 'al-hawq', which is what encircles the moon.

ويجوز أن يكون الحوق فعلا من حاق يحيق، كان في الأصل حيق فقلبت الياء واوا لانضمام الحاء

And it is possible that 'al-hawq' is a verbal noun from 'haqa yahiqu', it was originally 'hayq' and the ya was changed to a waw due to the damma on the ha.

وقال الفراء في قوله عز وجل: وحاق بهم: في كلام العرب عاد عليهم ما استهزؤوا به

And Al-Farra' said regarding the Almighty's saying: 'Wa haqa bihim': In the speech of the Arabs, it means what they mocked returned upon them.

وجاء في التفسير: أحاط بهم نزل بهم

And it came in the exegesis: 'Ahata bihim' means it surrounded them, it descended upon them.

قال: ومنه قوله عز وجل: ولا يحيق المكر السيئ إلا بأهله ، أي لا يرجع عاقبة مكروهه إلا عليهم

He said: And of it is the Almighty's saying: 'And the evil plot attacks not, except its plotters' own people', meaning its evil consequence returns only upon them.

أخرجني ما أجد من حاق الجوع ؛ هو من حاق يحيق حيقا وحاقا أي لزمه ووجب عليه
