And it was said: Al-hayf is a cold wind that comes from the direction of the south wind. He said: And this does not agree with the derivation; Al-Azhari said: What Al-Layth said, that al-hayf is a cold wind, no one said it, and al-hayf is only hot.

وقيل الهيف كل ريح ذات سموم تعطش المال وتيبس الرطب؛

And it was said: Al-hayf is every poisonous wind that makes livestock thirsty and dries up fresh produce;

وصوح البقل نأآج تجيء به ... هيف يمانية، في مرها نكب وفي المثل:

And the herbs dried up, withered, brought by... a southern Yemeni wind, in its passage it is nukba, and in the proverb:

ذهبت هيف لأديانها أي لعاداتها لأنها تجفف كل شيء وتيبسه وتهيف الرجل من الهيف كما يقال تشتى من الشتاء.

It went its way like hayf for its habits, meaning for its customs, because it dries everything and makes it wither, and it makes a man thirsty from al-hayf just as one says 'it is winter' from winter.

تلفه هوف، إنما بنته على فعل لما قبله من قولها: ليس بعلفوف، وما بعده من قولها: حشي من صوف
