A company came, and they were excessively praising their companion, saying: 'Messenger of God, we have never seen anyone like so-and-so; we did not travel except he was in prayer, nor did we alight except he was in prayer.'
يَهْرِفُونَ بِهِ أَيْ يَمْدَحُونَهُ وَيُطْنِبُونَ فِي الثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْهِ.
They praise him, meaning they commend him and elaborate in their praise of him.
لَا تَهْرِفْ بِمَا لَا تَعْرِفُ.
Do not praise what you do not know.
أَيْ لَا تَمْدَحْ قَبْلَ التَّجْرِبَةِ، وَهُوَ أَنْ تَذْكُرَهُ فِي أَوَّلِ كَلَامِكَ وَلَا يَكُونُ ذَلِكَ إِلَّا فِي حَمْدٍ وَثَنَاءٍ.

الهِرْفُ: مَدْحُ الرَّجُلِ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَعْرِفَةٍ.
Al-hirf is praising a man without knowledge.
الهِرْفُ: ابْتِدَاءُ النَّبَاتِ.
Al-hirf is the beginning of plant growth.
هَرَفَ السَّبُعُ يَهْرِفُ هَرْفًا: تَابَعَ صَوْتَهُ.
