Amr said: And you, by God, had approached me, and I would not be pleased to have someone like you instead of my escape from you.
قوله أهدفت لي، الإهداف الدنو منك والاستقبال لك والانتصاب
His saying 'ahdafta li' (you approached me): al-ihdaf is drawing near to you, facing you, and standing erect.
يقال: أهدف لي الشيء، فهو مهدف
It is said: the thing approached you, and it is muhdaf (approached).
وأنشد: ومن بني ضبة كهف مكهف، ... إن سال يوما جمعهم وأهدفوا
And he recited: And from Banu Dhabbah, a protective shelter, ... if their gathering ever disperses and they approach.
أهدف القوم أي قربوا
The people ahdafu, meaning they approached.
يقال لما أهدفت لي الكوفة نزلت، ولما أهدفت لهم تقربوا
It is said: when it approached me, Kufa was descended upon, and when it approached them, they drew near.
وكل شيء رأيته قد استقبلك استقبالا، فهو مهدف ومستهدف
And everything you see facing you directly is muhdaf and mustahdaf.
وقد استهدف أي انتصب
And it has istahdafa, meaning it stood erect.
ومن ذلك أخذ الهدف لانتصابه لمن يرميه
And from this is derived al-hadaf, for its standing erect for the one who shoots at it.
ترجو اجتبار عظمها، إذ أزحفت ... فأمرعت، لما إليك أهدفت
Hoping to mend its bones, when it moved... and became fertile, when it approached you.
قال له ابنه عبد الرحمن: لقد أهدفت لي يوم بدر فضفت عنك
His son Abd al-Rahman said to him: You had approached me on the day of Badr, and I turned away from you.
عظيم رماد البيت يحتل بيته، ... إلى هدف لم يحتجبه غيوب
Great is the ash of the house, his home is inhabited, ... towards a hadaf (prominent place) that is not hidden by depressions.
والهدف: المشرف من الأرض وإليه يلجأ
And al-hadaf: the elevated part of the land, to which one seeks refuge.
يقال لكل شيء دنا منك وانتصب لك واستقبلك: قد أهدف لك الشيء واستهدف
It is said of everything that drew near to you, stood erect for you, and faced you: the thing has ahdafa to you and istahdafa.
ويقال: هل هدف إليكم هادف أو هبش هابش؟ يستخبره هل حدث ببلده أحد سوى من كان به
And it is said: Has a hadif (stranger) come to you, or someone who has gathered? He asks him if anyone new has arrived in his town besides those who were already there.
والهدف: الغرض المنتضل فيه بالسهام
And al-hadaf: the target at which arrows are shot.
والهدف: كل شيء عظيم مرتفع

أن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، كان إذا مر بهدف مائل أو صدف مائل أسرع المشي
That the Prophet, peace be upon him, when he passed by a leaning hadaf (elevated structure) or a leaning cliff, he would quicken his pace.
الهدف ما رفع وبني من الأرض للنضال، والقرطاس ما وضع في الهدف ليرمى، والغرض ما ينصب شبه غربال أو حلقة
Al-hadaf is what is raised and built from the ground for archery, and al-qirtas is what is placed in the hadaf to be shot at, and al-gharad is what is set up resembling a sieve or a ring.
ويسمى القرطاس هدفا وغرضا، على الاستعارة
And al-qirtas is called hadaf and gharad, metaphorically.
يقال: أهدف لك الصيد فارمه، وأكثب وأغرض مثله
It is said: the game has been presented to you as a target, so shoot it; akthaba and aghraza are similar.
والهدف: حيد مرتفع من الرمل، وقيل هو كل شيء مرتفع كحيود الرمل المشرفة
And al-hadaf: an elevated dune of sand, and it is said to be anything elevated like the prominent sand dunes.
الهدف كل شيء مرتفع من بناء أو كثيب رمل أو جبل؛ ومنه سمي الغرض هدفا وبه شبه الرجل العظيم
Al-hadaf is everything elevated, whether a building, a sand dune, or a mountain; from this, the target is named hadaf, and by it, a great man is likened.
والهدف من الرجال الجسيم الطويل العنق العريض الألواح، على التشبيه بذلك
And al-hadaf among men is the stout, long-necked, broad-shouldered one, by way of simile.
وأهدف على التل أي أشرف
And ahdafa on the hill, meaning he looked out.
وامرأة مهدفة أي لحيمة
And a muhaddifah woman, meaning fleshy.
وركب مستهدف أي عريض مرتفع
And a mustahdif mount, meaning broad and elevated.
وإذا طعنت طعنت في مستهدف، ... رابي المجسة بالعبير مقرمد
And when you stab, you stab into something mustahdif (elevated and wide), ... the height of the measurement with perfume, smoothed.

And a muhaddifah woman: well-equipped.
وأهدف لك الشيء واستهدف: انتصب
And the thing ahdafa to you and istahdafa: it stood erect.
وحتى سمعنا خشف بيضاء جعدة، ... على قدمي مستهدف متقاصر
Until we heard the froth of a white, curly [she-camel], ... falling on the feet of a mustahdif (approaching) one that was shortening [itself].
والهدفة: الجماعة من الناس والبيوت
And al-hadafah: a group of people and houses.
رأيت هدفة من الناس أي فرقة
I saw a hadafah of people, meaning a group.
