This is a hundred and a 'nayf', with a doubled 'ya', meaning an increase, and this is the speech of the Arabs, and common people shorten it saying: 'wa nayf', which is an error for the eloquent.
الذي حصلناه من أقاويل حذاق البصريين والكوفيين أن النيف من واحدة إلى ثلاث، والبضع من أربع إلى تسع.
What we have gathered from the sayings of the masters of Basra and Kufa is that 'al-nayf' is from one to three, and 'al-bidh'' is from four to nine.
ويقال: نيف فلان على الستين ونحوها إذا زاد عليها؛ وكل ما زاد على العقد، فهو نيف، بالتشديد، وقد يخفف حتى يبلغ العقد الثاني.
And it is said: So-and-so exceeded sixty and the like if he increased beyond it; and everything that exceeds a round number is 'nayf', with emphasis, and it may be lightened until it reaches the second round number.

The 'nayf' is the surplus; according to Al-Lihyani.
ضع النيف في موضعه أي الفضل؛ وقد نيف العدد على ما تقول.
Put the 'nayf' in its place, meaning the surplus; and the number has exceeded what you say.
والنيف والنيف، كميت وميت، الزيادة.
And the 'nayf' and 'nayf', like 'mayt' and 'mayt', is the increase.
والنيف والنيفة: ما بين العقدين لأنها زيادة، يقال: له عشرة ونيف، وكذلك سائر العقود.

And its origin is 'waw'; Ibn Barrī said: the evidence for it is the saying of Ibn al-Raqqā': She gave birth to her head... on every mound, 'nayf'.
وامرأة منيفة ونياف: تامة الطول والحسن.
And a woman who is 'munifa' and 'niyaf': complete in height and beauty.
وجمل نياف وناقة نياف: طويلا السنام؛
A tall-humped camel and a tall-humped she-camel: long of hump.
والرحل فوق ذات نوف خامس
And the saddle is above the one with the high hump, the fifth.
ياء كل ذلك منقلبة عن واو لأنه من النوف الذي هو العلو والارتفاع، قلبت فيه الواو تخفيفا لا وجوبا، ألا ترى إلى صحة صوان وخوان وصوار؟
The 'ya' of all of that is an inversion from 'waw' because it is from 'al-nawf' which is height and elevation, the 'waw' was inverted in it for lightness, not obligation, do you not see the correctness of 'suwān', 'khuwwān', and 'suwār'?
على أنه قد حكى صيان وصيار، وذلك عن تخفيف لا عن صنعة ووجوب، وقد يجوز أن يكون نياف مصدرا جاريا على فعل معتل مقدر، فيجرى حينئذ مجرى قيام وصيام، ووصف به كما يوصف بالمصادر، وقصر نياف.
However, 'ṣiyān' and 'ṣiyār' have been narrated, and that is from lightening, not from deliberate construction and obligation, and it is also possible that 'niyāf' is a masdar following a hypothetical defective verb, and it would then be treated like 'qiyām' and 'ṣiyām', and it is used as a description as masdars are used, and 'niyāf' is shortened.
ناقة نياف وجمل نياف أي طويل في ارتفاع؛
A tall she-camel and a tall camel, meaning tall in height.
أفرغ لأمثال معى ألاف، ... يتبعن وخي عيهل نياف
He poured out for the likes of us, thousands... following the swift, tall-humped she-camel.
والوخي: حسن صوت مشيها.
And 'al-wakhi': the pleasant sound of its gait.
وحق النياف أن يذكر في فصل نوف.
And the 'niyāf' should rightly be mentioned in the section of 'nawf'.
يقال: ناف ينوف أي طال، وإنما قلبت الواو ياء على جهة التخفيف، ومنه قولهم: صوان وصيان وطوال وطيال؛
It is said: 'nāfa' 'yanūfu' meaning it became tall, and the 'waw' was inverted to 'ya' for lightness, and from this is their saying: 'ṣuwān' and 'ṣiyān', and 'ṭiwāl' and 'ṭiyāl'.
رآها الفؤاد، فاستضل ضلاله، ... نيافا من البيض الحسان العطابل
The heart saw her, and lost its way... tall among the beautiful, well-formed white ones.
والخيل تنحط بالكماة، وقد رأى ... لمع الربيثة بالنياف العيطل
And the horses descend with the warriors, and he saw... the gleam of the Rubaythah in the tall, shapely mountain.
كل كناز لحمه نياف، ... كالعلم الموفي على الأعراف
Every one whose flesh is abundant and tall, ... like a banner overlooking the heights.
يأوي إلى طائقه الشنعاف، ... بين حوامي رتب نياف
He seeks refuge in the steep cliff, ... between the protective ledges of the high ground.
والرتب: العتب؛ وأنشد أبو عمرو لأبي الربيع: والرحل فوق جسرة نياف ... كبداء جسر، غير ما ازدهاف
And 'al-ratab': the steps; and Abu Amr recited for Abu al-Rabi': And the saddle is above a tall, broad bridge... a broad bridge, not easily crossed.
نيافا تزل الطير عن قذفاته، ... يظل الضباب فوقه قد تعصرا
Tall, from whose precipices birds slip, ... fog lingers above it, having condensed.
وجمل نياف، على فيعال، إذا ارتفع في سيره؛
And a 'niyāf' camel, on the pattern of 'fi'āl', if it rises in its gait.
يتبعن نياف الضحى عزاهلا
They follow the tall one of the morning, fully formed.
يتبعن زياف الضحى
They follow the swift one of the morning.
والعزاهل التام الخلق.
And 'al-'azāhil': the perfectly formed.
وفلاة نياف: طويلة عريضة؛
And a 'niyāf' desert: long and wide.
إذا اعتلى عرض نياف فل، ... أذرى أساهيك عتيق أل، بعطف ضبعي مرح شمل
When he ascended the width of the tall desert, ... your old, noble 'asāhīk' scattered, with the flank of a playful, encompassing hyena.
والنوف: أسفل الذيل لزيادته وطوله؛ عن كراع.
And the 'nawf': the lower part of the tail due to its increase and length; according to Kra'a.
والنوف: السنام العالي، والجمع أنواف، وخص بعضهم به سنام البعير، وبه سمي نوف البكالي.
And the 'nawf': the high hump, and its plural is 'anwaf', and some have specified it for the hump of a camel, and Nawf al-Bakkālī was named after it.
والنوف: البظر، وكل ذلك في معنى الزيادة والارتفاع.

And do not leave me like a worthless thing, indeed I... am patient, when the cowardly like you hesitates.

Al-Mu'arrij said: The 'nawf' is the suckling from the breast, and the 'nawf' is the sound.
يقال: نافت الضبعة تنوف نوفا.
