تنحيتك الدمع عن خديك بإصبعك
Your wiping away tears from your cheeks with your finger.
فلولا ما تذكر منهم ... من الحلف، لم ينكف لعينيك مدمع
Were it not for what you remember of them... from the oath, tears would not have ceased from your eyes.
ونكفت الدمع أنكفه نكفا إذا نحيته عن خدك بإصبعك
And I wiped away tears, wiping them away, if you removed them from your cheek with your finger.
جعل يضرب بالمعول حتى عرق جبينه وانتكف العرق عن جبينه أي مسحه ونحاه
He began to strike with the pickaxe until his forehead sweated, and the sweat was wiped from his forehead, meaning he wiped it and removed it.
قد جاء جيش لا يكت ولا ينكف أي لا يحصى ولا يبلغ آخره
An army has come that cannot be counted nor its end reached, meaning it cannot be counted nor its end attained.
فبانوا فلولا ما تذكر منهم ... من الحلف، لم ينكف لعينيك مدمع
So they departed, and were it not for what you remember of them... from the oath, tears would not have ceased from your eyes.
ونكفت الدمع أنكفه نكفا إذا نحيته عن خدك بإصبعك
And I wiped away tears, wiping them away, if you removed them from your cheek with your finger.
جعل يضرب بالمعول حتى عرق جبينه وانتكف العرق عن جبينه أي مسحه ونحاه

As if it were from the wiping away of tears.
والنكف: مصدر نكفت الغيث أنكفه نكفا أي أقطعته وذلك إذا انقطع عنك
And al-nakf: the masdar of nakaftu al-ghayth, ankufuhu nakfan, meaning I cut it off, and that is when it ceases from you.
قول الجوهري أي أقطعته قال كذا في إصلاح المنطق
Jawhari's statement means I cut it off, as stated in Islah al-Mantiq.
ويقال: هذا غيث لا ينكف، وهذا غيث ما نكفناه أي ما قطعناه
And it is said: this is rain that does not cease, and this is rain that we did not cut off, meaning we did not stop it.
وكذلك حكاه ثعلب قطعناه بغير ألف، وقد نكفناه نكفا
And thus Tha'lab narrated it, 'we cut it off' without alif, and we have cut it off, nakfan.
وغيث لا ينكف: لا ينقطع
And rain that does not cease: it does not stop.
وقليب لا ينكف: لا ينزح
And a well that does not run dry: it is not emptied.
وهذا غيث لا ينكفه أحد أي لا يعلم أحد أين أقصاه
And this is rain that no one knows its limit, meaning no one knows where its furthest point is.
ورأينا غيثا ما نكفه أحد سار يوما ولا يومين أي ما أقطعه
And we saw rain that no one knew its extent; it rained for a day or two, meaning we did not measure its duration.
وفلان بحر لا ينكف أي لا ينزح
And so-and-so is a sea that does not run out, meaning it is inexhaustible.
ومعنى ن يستنكف أي لن يأنف، وأصله من نكفت الدمع إذا نحيته بإصبعك عن خدك
And the meaning of 'yastankifu' is 'he will not disdain', and its origin is from nakaftu al-dam' if you removed it with your finger from your cheek.
فتأويل ن يستنكف لن ينقبض ولن يمتنع من عبودة الله
So the interpretation of 'yastankifu' is that he will not shrink back nor will he refrain from servitude to God.
ويقال: نكفت من ذلك الأمر أنكف نكفا إذا استنكفت منه
And it is said: I felt aversion to that matter, I felt aversion, nakfan, if you felt aversion to it.
ونكفت، بالفتح، لغة
And nakaftu, with fatha, is a pronunciation.
ونكفت عن الشيء أي عدلت مثل كنفت
And I turned aside from the thing, meaning I deviated like I turned aside.
ويقال: ضرب هذا فانتكف فضرب هذا
And it is said: this one struck and was struck, and this one struck.
والانتكاف: مثل الانتكاث
And al-intikaaf: is like al-intikaath.
ما بال قلب راجع انتكافا، ... بعد التعزي، اللهو والإيجافا؟
What is wrong with a returning heart that deviates... after consolation, amusement, and haste?
ونكف نكفا وانتكف: تبرأ وهو نحو الأول
And he declared himself free, nakafan, and declared himself free: he disassociated, which is similar to the first meaning.
وسئل النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، عن قولهم سبحان الله، فقال: هو الانتكاف
And the Prophet, peace be upon him, was asked about their saying 'Subhan Allah', and he said: it is al-intikaaf.
ثم فسره ثعلب فقال: هو التبرؤ من الأولاد والصواحب
Then Tha'lab explained it, saying: it is disassociation from children and companions.
وفي النهاية: فقال إنكاف الله من كل سوء أي تنزيهه وتقديسه
And in Al-Nihayah: he said 'Inkaf Allah min kulli soo' meaning His transcendence and sanctification from all evil.
يقال: نكفت من الشيء واستنكفت منه أي أنفت منه، وأنكفته أي نزهته عما يستنكف
It is said: I felt aversion to the thing and felt aversion to it, meaning I felt disdain for it, and I made it free from what is disdained.
النَّكَف ذربة تحت اللغدين مثل الغدد
Al-nakaf: a swelling under the jawbones like glands.
والنكفة: الداغصة
And al-nakfah: the boil.
والنكفة والنكفة: ما بين اللحيين والعنق من جانبي الحلقوم من قدم من ظاهر وباطن
And al-nakfah and al-nakfah: what is between the jawbones and the neck on the sides of the pharynx, from the front and the back.
غددة في أصل اللحي بين الرأد وشحمة الأذن
A gland at the base of the jawbone between the earlobe and the mastoid process.
وقيل: هو حد اللحي
And it is said: it is the edge of the jawbone.
وقيل: النكفتان غدتان تكتنفان الحلقوم في أصل اللحي
And it is said: the nakfatan are two glands that surround the pharynx at the base of the jawbone.
وقيل: لحمتان مكتنفتا عكدة اللسان من باطن الفم في أصول الأذنين داخلتان بين اللحيين
And it is said: two fleshy parts surrounding the root of the tongue from the inside of the mouth, at the base of the ears, entering between the jawbones.
وقيل: هما عقدتان ربما سقطتا من وجع الحلق فظهر لهما حجم
And it is said: they are two nodes that may fall from a sore throat, and their size becomes apparent.
ونكف الرجل نكفا: أصابه ذلك
And the man was afflicted, nakafan: that befell him.
وقيل: النكفتان العظمان الناتئان عند شحمة الأذنين يكون في الناس وفي الإبل
And it is said: the nakfatan are the two prominent bones near the earlobes, found in humans and camels.
وقيل: هما عن يمين العنفقة وشمالها، وهو الموضع الذي لا ينبت عليه شعر
And it is said: they are to the right and left of the philtrum, which is the place where hair does not grow.
وقيل: النكفتان من الإنسان غدتان في الحلق بينهما الحلقوم
And it is said: the nakfatan in humans are two glands in the throat, with the pharynx between them.
وهما من الفرس طرفا اللحيين الداخلان في أصول الأذنين
And for a horse, they are the ends of the jawbones that go into the roots of the ears.
والجمع من ذلك كله: نكف، بالتحريك
And the plural of all of that is: nakaf, with harakah.
النَّكَف اللغدان اللذان في الحلق وهما جانبا الحلقوم
Al-nakaf: the two lumps that are in the throat, and they are the sides of the pharynx.
فطوحت ببضعة والبطن خف، ... فقذفتها، فأبت لا تنقذف، فخرفتها فتلقاها النكف
So I threw a piece, and my stomach was light... so I threw it, and it refused to be thrown, so I made it fall, and the nakaf received it.
والمنكوف الذي يشتكي نكفته، وهو أصل اللهزمة
And the munkuf is one who complains of his nakfah, which is the base of the jaw-angle.
ونكفت الإبل، فهي منكفة إذا ظهرت نكفاتها
And the camels were afflicted, so they are munkifah if their nakfah appeared.
والنكفتان: اللهزمتان
And the nakfatan: the jaw-angles.
والنكفة: وجع يأخذ في الأذن
And al-nakfah: a pain that affects the ear.
النفكة لغة في النكفة
Al-nafkah is a pronunciation for al-nakfah.
والنكاف والنكاث، على البدل: الغددة
And al-nakaaf and al-nakaath, by substitution: the gland.
وقيل: هو داء يأخذ في النكفتين وهو أحد الأدواء التي اشتقت من العضو
And it is said: it is a disease that affects the two nakfah glands, and it is one of the diseases derived from the organ.
وهو مذكور في حرف القاف
And it is mentioned in the letter Qaf.
وإبل منكفة: أصابها ذلك
And camels munkifah: that ailment has befallen them.
والنكاف: ورم يأخذ نكفتي البعير
And al-nukaaf: a swelling that affects the nakfah of a camel.
قال: وهو داء يأخذها في حلوقها فيقتلها قتلا ذريعا
He said: and it is a disease that affects them in their throats and kills them swiftly.
والبعير منكوف والناقة منكوفة
And the camel is munkuf and the she-camel is munkufah.
والنكف: وجع يأخذ في اليد، وقد نكف نكفا
And al-nakf: a pain that affects the hand, and he had pain, nakafan.
ونكف أثره ينكفه نكفا، وانتكفه: اعترضه في مكان سهل
And he intercepted his track, intercepting it, and he intercepted it: he crossed it in an easy place.
وذلك إذا علا ظلفا من الأرض غليظا لا يؤدي الأثر فاعترضه في مكان سهل
And that is when he stepped on a thick part of the ground where the track was not clear, so he intercepted it in an easy place.
ثم استحث ذرعه استحثاثا، ... نكفت حيث مثمث المثماثا
Then he urged his pace with urgency... I intercepted where the ground was soft and yielding.
والانتكاف: الميل
And al-intikaaf: inclination.
وانتكفت له فضربته انتكافا أي ملت عليه
And I inclined towards him and struck him, intikaafan, meaning I leaned over him.
لما انتكفت له فولى مدبرا، ... كرنفته بهراوة عجراء
When I inclined towards him, he turned and fled... I struck him with a crooked staff.
وينكف: اسم ملك من ملوك حمير
And Yunkuf: the name of a king from the kings of Himyar.
وينكف: موضع
And Yunkuf: a place.
وذات نكيف: موضع
And Dhat Nukayf: a place.
ويوم نكيف: وقعة كانت بين قريش وبين بني كنانة
And Yawm Nukayf: a battle that took place between Quraysh and Banu Kinanah.
