Cleanse your mouths, for they are the pathways of the Quran, meaning preserve them from idle talk, obscenity, backbiting, slander, lying, and the like, and from eating what is forbidden and filth, and urging their purification from impurities and questioning.
والتنظف: تكلف النظافة.
And 'tanazzuf' (striving for cleanliness): is to seek cleanliness.
استنظفت الشيء أي أخذته نظيفا كله.
I took all of the thing, meaning I took it completely clean.
تكون فتنة تستنظف العرب أي تستوعبهم هلاكا، من استنظفت الشيء إذا أخذته كله؛ ومنه قولهم: استنظفت ما عنده واستغنيت عنه.
There will be a tribulation that exhausts the Arabs, meaning it encompasses them in destruction, from 'istanzafa' the thing when you take it all; and from this is their saying: 'I took all that he had and became independent of it.'
استنظف الوالي ما عليه من الخراج: استوفاه، ولا يستعمل التنظيف في هذا المعنى؛ قال الجوهري: يقال استنظفت الخراج ولا يقال نظفته.
The governor collected all the tax due from him: he collected it fully, and 'tanzeef' is not used in this meaning; Al-Jawhari said: It is said 'istanzafa' the tax, and it is not said 'nazzfahu'.
نظف الفصيل ما في ضرع أمه وانتظفه: شرب جميع ما فيه، وانتظفته أنا كذلك.
The young camel cleaned out what was in its mother's udder and 'intazafahu': it drank all that was in it, and I 'intazafahu' likewise.
والتنظف عند العرب التنطس والتقزز وطلب النظافة من رائحة غمر أو نفي زهومة وما أشبهها، وكذلك غسل الوسخ والدرن والدنس.
And 'tanazzuf' among the Arabs is fastidiousness, being picky, and seeking cleanliness from the smell of grease or the removal of greasiness and the like, as well as washing away dirt, grime, and filth.
ويقال للأشنان وما أشبهه: نظيف، لتنظيفه اليد والثوب من غمر المرق واللحم ووضر الودك وما أشبهه.
And soapwort and the like are called 'nazif' (clean), because of its cleaning the hand and garment from the grease of broth and meat and the fat of tallow and the like.
وفلان نجس السراويل إذا كان غير عفيف الفرج.
And so-and-so is 'najis al-sarawil' (impure of trousers) if he is unchaste in his private parts.
