والقرقف: الخمر، وهو اسم لها، قيل: سميت قرقفا لأنها تقرقف شاربها أي ترعده، وأنكر بعضهم أنها تقرقف الناس.
And 'al-qaraqaf': wine, and it is a name for it. It is said: it was named 'qaraqaf' because it makes its drinker shiver, meaning it trembles him, and some denied that it makes people shiver.
قال الليث: القرقف اسم للخمر ويوصف به الماء البارد ذو الصفاء؛
Al-Layth said: 'Al-qaraqaf' is a name for wine and is used to describe clear cold water;
وأبيض من ماء الغمامة قرقف أراد به الماء.
And white like the water of a cloud, 'qaraqaf', meaning water.
وأوهمه بيت الفرزدق، وفي البيت مؤخر أريد به التقديم، وذلك الذي شبه على الليث، والمعنى فضلتان سلافة قرقف وأبيض من ماء الغمامة.
And the verse of Al-Farazdaq misled him, and in the verse there is a postponed element intended to be placed first, and that is what confused Al-Layth, and the meaning is two portions: 'sulafah' (wine) and 'qaraqaf' (wine) and white like the water of a cloud.
والقرقوف: الدرهم، وحكي عن بعض العرب أنه قال: أبيض قرقوف، بلا شعر ولا صوف، في البلاد يطوف؛ يعني الدرهم الأبيض.
And 'al-qaraqoof': the dirham. It is narrated from some Arabs that he said: 'White qaraqoof, without hair or wool, it roams the lands;' meaning the white dirham.
وفي الحديث أن الرجل إذا لم يغر على أهله بعث الله طائرا يقال له القرقفنة فيقع على مشريق بابه، ولو رأى الرجال مع أهله لم يبصرهم ولم يغير أمرهم.
And in the hadith, if a man does not show jealousy over his family, Allah sends a bird called 'al-qaraqafanah' which lands on the lintel of his door. If he had seen men with his family, he would not have seen them nor changed their situation.
الفراء: من نادر كلامهم القرقفنة الكمرة.
Al-Farra': Among their rare expressions is 'al-qaraqafanah' for the clitoris.
غيره: القرقف طير صغار كأنها الصعاء.
