وقيل: سمي عرفة لأن جبريل، عليه السلام، طاف بإبراهيم، عليه السلام، فكان يريه المشاهد فيقول له: أعرفت أعرفت؟ فيقول إبراهيم: عرفت عرفت

And it is said: it was named 'Arafah because Gabriel, peace be upon him, circumambulated with Abraham, peace be upon him, showing him the sights and saying to him: Have you recognized? Have you recognized? And Abraham would say: I have recognized, I have recognized.

والتعريف: الوقوف بعرفات

And al-ta'rif: the standing at Arafat.

ومنهم قول ابن دريد: ثم أتى التعريف يقرو مخبتا تقديره ثم أتى موضع التعريف فحذف المضاف وأقام المضاف إليه مقامه

And among them is the saying of Ibn Duraid: Then he came to the 'ta'rif' to visit a humble person, meaning then he came to the place of 'ta'rif', and the possessive noun was omitted and the possessed noun took its place.

وعرف القوم: وقفوا بعرفة

And the people 'arafū': they stood at Arafah.

وهو المعرف للموقف بعرفات

And it is the 'mu'arraf' for the standing place at Arafat.

وفي حديث ابن عباس، رضي الله عنهما: ثم محلها إلى البيت العتيق وذلك بعد المعرف ، يريد بعد الوقوف بعرفة

And in the hadith of Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them: Then its destination is to the Ancient House, and that is after the 'mu'arraf', meaning after standing at Arafah.

And 'Arafāt is a place in Mina, and it is a noun in the form of a plural, so it is not pluralized. Al-Farra' said: it has no valid singular.

وقول الناس: نزلنا بعرفة شبيه بمولد، وليس بعربي محض، وهي معرفة وإن كان جمعا لأن الأماكن لا تزول فصار كالشيء الواحد

And people's saying: We descended at 'Arafah' is similar to a 'mawlid', and it is not purely Arabic, and it is definite even though it is plural because places do not move, so it became like a single entity.

وخالف الزيدين، تقول: هؤلاء عرفات حسنة، تنصب النعت لأنه نكرة وهي مصروفة

And it differs from the two Zayds; you say: These are good 'arafāt', you make the adjective accusative because it is indefinite and it is declined.

قال الله تعالى: فإذا أفضتم من عرفات

Allah the Almighty said: So when you pour forth from Arafat.

والعرف: مواضع منها عرفة ساق وعرفة الأملح وعرفة صارة

And al-'urf: places, including 'Arafat Saq, 'Arafat al-Amalhah, and 'Arafat Sarrah.
