وأصل الطيف الجنون ثم استعمل في الغضب ومس الشيطان
And the origin of 'tayf' is madness, then it was used for anger and the touch of Satan.
يقال: طاف يطيف ويطوف طيفا وطوفا، فهو طائف، ثم سمي بالمصدر
It is said: 'tafa' and 'yataf' and 'yatuf' with 'tayfan' and 'tufan', so he is a 'ta'if', then he is named by the masdar.
ومن طيف الخيال الذي يراه النائم
And from the 'tayf al-khayal' which the sleeper sees.
فطاف بي رجل وأنا نائم
Then a man appeared to me while I was sleeping.
والطياف: سواد الليل
And 'al-tayyaf' is the darkness of the night.
عقبان دجن بادرت طيافا
Eagles of the rain, I hastened to the darkness of the night.
