الحلب بالكف كلها وذلك لضخم الضرع
Milking with the whole hand, and that is due to the largeness of the udder.
بضف القوادم ذات الفضول
With the abundance of the forelegs, possessing fullness.
وهي قليلة اللبن
And she is little in milk.
هو أن يقبض بأصابعه كلها على الضرع
It is to grasp the udder with all of his fingers.
ناقة ضفوف، وشاة ضفوف: كثيرتا اللبن بينتا الضفاف
A camel that is abundant in milk, and a sheep that is abundant in milk: both are abundant in milk and clearly so.
وعين ضفوف: كثيرة الماء
And a spring that is abundant in water: having much water.
ضببت الناقة أضبها ضبا إذا حلبتها بالكف
I milked the camel, I milk it, with a milking, if I milked it with the hand.
فأما الضب فأن تجعل إبهامك على الخلف ثم ترد أصابعك على الإبهام والخلف جميعا
As for the 'ḍabb', it is to place your thumb on the hind part and then bring your fingers over the thumb and the hind part together.
ضف الناقة لغة في ضبها إذا حلبها بالكف كلها
To milk the camel is a dialectal variant of 'ḍabba'ha' if one milks it with the entire hand.
شاة ضفة الشخب أي واسعة الشخب
A sheep that is 'ḍiffat al-shakhb', meaning wide in its milk flow.
وضفة البحر: ساحله
And the 'ḍiffah' of the sea: its shore.
والضفة، بالكسر: جانب النهر الذي تقع عليه النبائت
And the 'ḍiffah', with kasra: the side of the river on which plants grow.
والجمع ضفاف؛ قال: يقذف بالخشب على الضفاف
And the plural is 'ḍifāf'; he said: It throws wood onto the shores.
وضفة الوادي وضيفه: جانبه
And the 'ḍiffah' of the valley and its 'ḍayf': its side.
فقدموه على ضفة النهر فضربوا عنقه
They brought him to the bank of the river and struck off his head.
فيقف ضفتي جفونه أي جانبيها
So the two sides of his eyelids stand, meaning their sides.
وضفتا الحيزوم: جانباه
And the two sides of the diaphragm: its sides.
وضفة الماء: دفعته الأولى
And the 'ḍiffah' of the water: its first surge.
وضفة الناس: جماعتهم
And the 'ḍiffah' of the people: their group.
دخلت في ضفة القوم أي في جماعتهم
I entered into the group of the people, meaning into their gathering.
يقال فلان من لفيفنا وضفيفنا أي ممن نلفه بنا ونضفه إلينا إذا حزبتنا الأمور
It is said, 'So-and-so is from our gathering and our 'ḍafīf', meaning from those whom we gather to us and draw to us when matters trouble us.'
قوم متضافون خفيفة أموالهم
People who are 'mutadāffūn', their possessions are light.
يضفها ضفا على اندرائها
He gathers them together, 'ḍaffan', on their journey.
حتى اشفتر الناس بعد الضف أي تفرقوا بعد اجتماع
Until the people dispersed after the gathering, meaning they scattered after coming together.
والضفف: ازدحام الناس على الماء
And 'al-ḍafaf': the crowding of people at the water.
وتضافوا على الماء إذا كثروا عليه
And they crowded around the water when they became numerous upon it.
إنهم لمتضافون على الماء أي مجتمعون مزدحمون عليه
Indeed, they are 'mutadāffūn' around the water, meaning gathered and crowded upon it.
ماء مضفوف: كثير عليه الناس مثل مشفوه
Water that is 'maḍfūf': crowded with people, like 'mashfūh'.
ماؤنا اليوم مضفوف كثير الغاشية من الناس والماشية
Our water today is 'maḍfūf', with a large crowd of people and livestock.
لا يستقي في النزح المضفوف إلا مدارة الغروب الجوف
One does not draw water from the 'maḍfūf' well except by managing the deep buckets.
وفلان مضفوف مثل مثمود إذا نفد ما عنده
And so-and-so is 'maḍfūf' like 'mathmūd' if what he has is depleted.
وردت ماء مظفوفا أي مشغولاً
I came to a 'maẓfūf' (or 'maḍfūf') water source, meaning occupied.
وفلان مضفوف عليه كذلك
And so-and-so is 'maḍfūf' upon it likewise.
رجل مضفوف، بغير على
A man who is 'maḍfūf', without 'alayhi'.
الضفف ما دون ملء المكيال ودون كل مملوء، وهو الأكل دون الشبع
'Al-ḍafaf' is less than filling a measure and less than completely full, and it is eating without being satiated.
الضفف قلة المأكول وكثرة الأكلة
'Al-ḍafaf' is scarcity of food and abundance of eaters.
أن تكون العيال أكثر من الزاد، والحفف أن تكون بمقداره
That the dependents are more than the provisions, and 'al-ḥafaf' is that they are equal in amount.
الضفف الغاشية والعيال، وقيل الحشم؛ كلاهما عن اللحياني
'Al-ḍafaf' is the crowd and the dependents, and it is said 'al-ḥasham'; both are from Al-Layth.
الضفف: كثرة العيال
'Al-ḍafaf': abundance of dependents.
لا ضفف يشغله ولا ثقل
No dependents occupy him, nor any burden.
وأصابهم من العيش ضفف أي شدة
And hardship befell them in their living, meaning severity.
تناولا مع الناس
He ate with the people.
الضفف كثرة الأيدي على الطعام
'Al-ḍafaf' is the abundance of hands on the food.
الضفف الضيق والشدة
'Al-ḍafaf' is constriction and hardship.
وبه فسر بعضهم الحديث، وقيل: يعني اجتماع الناس أي لم يأكل خبزا ولحما وحده ولكن مع الناس
And some interpreted the hadith with this, and it was said: It means the gathering of people, meaning he did not eat bread and meat alone but with people.
لم يشبع إلا بضيق وشدة
He did not eat his fill except with difficulty and hardship.
أن يكون المال قليلا ومن يأكله كثيرا
That the money is little and those who eat it are many.
الضفف أن تكون الأكلة أكثر من مقدار المال، والحفف أن تكون الأكلة بمقدار المال
'Al-ḍafaf' is that the meal is more than the amount of money, and 'al-ḥafaf' is that the meal is equal to the amount of money.
الضفف القلة، والحفف الحاجة
'Al-ḍafaf' is scarcity, and 'al-ḥafaf' is need.
ولد للإنسان على حفف أي على حاجة إليه
A person is born to a person in need, meaning in need of him.
الضفف والحفف واحد
'Al-ḍafaf' and 'al-ḥafaf' are the same.
أصابهم من العيش ضفف وحفف وشظف كل هذا من شدة العيش
Hardship, need, and difficulty befell them in their living; all of this is from the severity of life.
ما رؤي عليه ضفف ولا حفف أي أثر حاجة
No hardship or need was seen upon him, meaning no trace of need.
ما رؤي عليهم حفوف ولا ضيق
No need or hardship was seen upon them.
الضفف الحاجة
'Al-ḍafaf' is need.
رجل ضفف الحال وقوم ضففو الحال
A man in difficult circumstances and people in difficult circumstances.
الضفف: العجلة في الأمر
'Al-ḍafaf': haste in the matter.
وليس في رأيه وهن ولا ضفف
And there is no weakness nor haste in his opinion.
ولقيته على ضفف أي على عجل من الأمر
And I met him in haste, meaning in a hurry with the matter.
وهنية تشبه القراد إذا لسعت شري الجلد بعد لسعتها، وهي رمداء في لونها غبراء
And a small thing resembling a tick, which, if it bites, it irritates the skin after its bite, and it is reddish in color, dusty.
