وكانت العرب إذا حجت وحضرت عرفة لا تدفع منها حتى يدفع بها صوفة
And when the Arabs performed Hajj and were at Arafat, they would not depart from it until Sufah departed.
وكذلك لا ينفرون من منى حتى تنفر صوفة، فإذا أبطأت بهم قالوا: أجيزي صوفة
And likewise, they would not leave Mina until Sufah left. So if they were delayed, they would say: Expedite Sufah.
صاف عني شره يصوف صوفا: عدل
His evil deviated from me, he deviated 'ṣūfā': he turned aside.
صاف السهم عن الهدف يصوف ويصيف: عدل عنه
The arrow deviated from the target, it deviated 'ṣūf' and 'ṣayf': it turned aside from it.
صاف عني شر فلان
Turn away from me the evil of so-and-so.
وأصاف الله عني شره
And may God avert his evil from me.
