And the people lined up, forming a row, and they lined up and gathered: they became a row.
وتصافوا عليه: اجتمعوا صفا.
And they gathered around it: they assembled in a row.
والصافات صفا ؛ قيل: الصافات الملائكة مصطفون في السماء يسبحون الله تعالى.
And the lining up in rows; it was said: The lining up are the angels, standing in rows in the sky, glorifying God Almighty.
وإنا لنحن الصافون ؛ قال: وذلك لأن لهم مراتب يقومون عليها صفوفا كما يصطف المصلون.
And indeed, we are the ones lining up; he said: And that is because they have ranks upon which they stand in rows, just as the worshippers line up.
إذا لقيتم العدو فدغرى ولا صفا أي لا تصفوا صفا.
If you meet the enemy, charge directly and not in a row, meaning do not form a row.
والصف: موقف الصفوف.
And the saff: is the standing place of the rows.
والمصف: الموقف في الحرب، والجمع المصاف، وصافوهم القتال.
And the masaff: is the position in war, and the plural is al-masaff, and they fought them in ranks.
ثم ائتوا صفا؛ مصطفين فهو على هذا حال.
Then come in a row, lining up; so it is a حال (circumstantial accusative) in this case.
قال: ويجوز ثم ائتوا صفا أي مصطفين ليكون أنظم لكم وأشد لهيبتكم.
He said: And it is permissible to say then come in a row, meaning lining up, so that it may be more orderly for you and more imposing for your awe.
والطير الصواف: التي تصف أجنحتها فلا تحركها.
And the birds al-sawaff: are those that spread their wings and do not move them.
عرضوا على ربك صفا ؛ قال ابن عرفة: يجوز أن يكونوا كلهم صفا واحدا ويجوز أن يقال في مثل هذا صفا يراد به الصفوف فيؤدي الواحد عن الجميع.
They were displayed to your Lord in a row; Ibn 'Arafa said: It is permissible that they all be one row, and it is permissible in such a case to say 'a row' meaning rows, so the singular represents the plural.
كأنهما حزقان من طير صواف باسطات أجنحتها في الطيران.
As if they were two flocks of birds, sawaff, spreading their wings in flight.
والصواف: جمع صافة.
And al-sawaff: is the plural of saffa.
وناقة صفوف: تصف يديها عند الحلب.
And a camel, sfoof: it arranges its legs when being milked.
وصفت الناقة تصف، وهي صفوف: جمعت بين محلبين أو ثلاثة في حلبة.
And the camel arranged its legs, arranging, and it is sfoof: it milked between two or three teats in one milking session.
والصف: أن تحلب الناقة في محلبين أو ثلاثة تصف بينها.
And the saff: is when a camel is milked from two or three teats, arranging between them.
ناقة شيخ للإله راهب ... تصف في ثلاثة المحالب.
The camel of an old man, a worshipper of God... arranges itself for three milk pails.
والصفوف الناقة التي تجمع بين محلبين في حلبة واحدة، والشفوع والقرون مثلها.
And al-sfoof: is the camel that milks between two teats in one session, and al-shufuu' and al-qurun are similar.
يقال ناقة صفوف للتي تصف أقداحا من لبنها إذا حلبت، وذلك من كثرة لبنها، كما يقال قرون وشفوع.
It is said a camel is sfoof for one that yields cups of its milk when milked, due to the abundance of its milk, just as it is said qurun and shufuu'.
حلبانة ركبانة صفوف، ... تخلط بين وبر وصوف
A milker, a rider, sfoof, ... mixing hair and wool.
وترفد بعد الصف في فرقان هو جمع فرق.
And it yields after the saff in furqan, which is the plural of farq.
والصف: القدحان لإقرانهما.
And the saff: are the two cups for their pairing.
وصفها: حلبها.
And siffaha: is milking it.
وصفت الطير في السماء تصف: صفت أجنحتها ولم تحركها.
And the birds flew in the sky, tasiff: they spread their wings and did not move them.
والطير صافات ؛ باسطات أجنحتها.
And the birds are saffat; spreading their wings.
والبدن الصواف: المصفوفة للنحر التي تصفف ثم تنحر.
And the sacrificial animals al-sawaff: are those lined up for slaughter, which are arranged in rows and then slaughtered.
فاذكروا اسم الله عليها صواف ؛ منصوبة على الحال أي قد صفت قوائمها فاذكروا الله عليها في حال نحرها صواف.
So mention the name of God over them, sawaff; it is in the accusative case as a circumstantial adverb, meaning their legs have been lined up, so mention God over them in the state of their slaughter, sawaff.
قال: ويحتمل أن يكون معناها أنها مصطفة في منحرها.
He said: And it is possible that its meaning is that they are lined up at their place of slaughter.
عن ابن عباس في قوله تعالى صواف، قال: قياما.
From Ibn 'Abbas regarding the Almighty's saying sawaff, he said: Standing.
عن ابن عمر في قوله صواف قال: تعقل وتقوم على ثلاث.
From Ibn 'Umar regarding his saying sawaff, he said: They are hobbled and stand on three legs.
وقرأها ابن عباس صوافن وقال: معقولة، يقول: بسم الله والله أكبر اللهم منك ولك.
And Ibn 'Abbas recited it as sawafin and said: Hobbled, saying: In the name of God, and God is the greatest, O God, from You and for You.
صفت الإبل قوائمها، فهي صافة وصواف.
The camels arranged their legs, so they are saffa and sawwaf.
وصف اللحم يصفه صفا، فهو صفيف: شرحه عراضا.
And meat is sliced, yusiffuhu suffan, so it is safif: sliced thinly.
وقيل: الصفيف الذي يغلى إغلاءة ثم يرفع، وقيل: الذي يصف على الحصى ثم يشوى.
And it was said: Al-safif is that which is boiled once and then removed, and it was said: that which is laid out on stones and then grilled.
فظل طهاة اللحم من بين منضج ... صفيف شواء، أو قدير معجل
So the meat cooks remained, some preparing... grilled safif, or quickly stewed.
التصفيف نحو التشريح وهو أن تعرض البضعة حتى ترق فتراها تشف شفيفا.
Al-tasfif is like dissection, which is to slice the piece of meat until it becomes thin, so you see it becoming translucent.
الصفيف أن يشرح اللحم غير تشريح القديد، ولكن يوسع مثل الرغفان، فإذا دق الصفيف ليؤكل، فهو قدير، فإذا ترك ولم يدق، فهو صفيف.
Al-safif is to slice the meat, not like drying it, but to widen it like flatbreads; when the safif is pounded to be eaten, it is qadeer, and if it is left without pounding, it is safif.
الصفيف ما صف من اللحم على الجمر لينشوي، تقول منه: صففت اللحم صفا.
Al-safif is what is laid out of meat on the embers to be grilled; you say from it: I laid out the meat, suffan.
كان يتزود صفيف الوحش وهو محرم أي قديدها.
He used to provision himself with dried wild meat while in the state of Ihram, meaning its dried form.
ويقال: صففت اللحم أصفه صفا إذا تركته في الشمس حتى يجف.
And it is said: I dried the meat, asiffuhu suffan, if I left it in the sun until it dried.
وصفة الرحل والسرج: التي تضم العرقوتين والبدادين من أعلاهما وأسفلهما، والجمع صفف على القياس.
And the sifa of the pack saddle and the saddle: is that which encompasses the two straps and the two side pieces from their top and bottom, and the plural is sisfaf by analogy.
وصففت لها صفة أي عملتها لها.
And I made a sifa for it, meaning I made it for it.
وصففت السرج: جعلت له صفة.
And I fitted the saddle: I made a sifa for it.
ونهى عن صفف النمور ؛ هي جمع صفة وهي للسرج بمنزلة الميثرة من الرحل.
And he forbade the sisfaf of tigers; it is the plural of sifa, and it is for the saddle like the mithra is for the pack saddle.

والصفة من البنيان شبه البهو الواسع الطويل السمك.

هم فقراء المهاجرين ومن لم يكن له منهم منزل يسكنه فكانوا يأوون إلى موضع مظلل في مسجد المدينة يسكنونه.
They are the poor among the Emigrants, and whoever among them did not have a home to live in, so they used to take shelter in a shaded place in the mosque of Medina, where they lived.
مات رجل من أهل الصفة ؛ هو موضع مظلل من المسجد كان يأوي إليه المساكين.
A man from the people of al-Suffa died; it is a shaded place in the mosque where the poor used to take shelter.
والصفة: الظلة.
And al-suffa: is the canopy.
وعذاب يوم الصفة كعذاب يوم الظلة.
And the punishment of the Day of the Suffa is like the punishment of the Day of the Canopy.
كان قوم عصوا رسولهم فأرسل الله عليهم حرا وغما غشيهم من فوقهم حتى هلكوا.
A people disobeyed their messenger, so God sent upon them heat and gloom that covered them from above until they perished.
وأرض صفصف: ملساء مستوية.
And land, safsaf: smooth and level.
فيذرها قاعا صفصفا ؛ الفراء الصفصف الذي لا نبات فيه.
And leaves it as a level valley; Al-Farra said al-safsaf is that which has no vegetation.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: الصفصف القرعاء، وقال مجاهد: قاعا صفصفا ، مستويا.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-safsaf is the barren land, and Mujahid said: a level valley, meaning even.
الصفصف المستوي من الأرض، وجمعه صفاصف.
Al-safsaf is the level ground, and its plural is safasif.
إذا ركبت داوية مدلهمة، ... وغرد حاديها لها بالصفاصف
When you ride a dark, rain-laden cloud, ... and its driver sings to it in the flatlands.
والصفصفة كالصفصف؛ عن ابن جني، والصفصف: الفلاة.
And al-safsafah is like al-safsaf; according to Ibn Jinni, and al-safsaf: is the desert.
والصفصف: العصفور، في بعض اللغات.
And al-safsaf: is the sparrow, in some languages.
والصفصاف: الخلاف، واحدته صفصافة، وقيل: شجر الخلاف شامية.
And al-safsaf: is the poplar tree, its singular is safsafah, and it was said: the poplar trees are Syrian.
وهي الدويبة التي تسميها العجم السيسك، وروي أن الحجاج قال لطباخه: اعمل لنا صفصافة وأكثر فيجنها.
And it is the small creature that the Persians call 'sisk', and it was narrated that Al-Hajjaj said to his cook: Make us a safsafah and add a lot of vijna.
قال: الصفصافة لغة ثقيفية، وهي السكباجة.
He said: Al-safsafah is a Thaqafi dialect, and it is al-sukkabajah.
الصفصفة السكباجة والفيجن السداب.
Al-safsafah is al-sukkabajah and al-vijna is al-sudab.
أصبحت لا أملك صفة ولا لفة ؛ الصفة: ما يجعل على الراحة من الحبوب، واللفة اللقمة.
I woke up owning neither sifa nor laffa; al-sifa: is what is placed on the palm of grain, and al-laffa is a mouthful.
وهو موضع كانت فيه حرب بين علي، عليه السلام، وبين معاوية.
And it is a place where there was a war between Ali, peace be upon him, and Mu'awiyah.
ووصفون والنهر الهني ولجة، ... من البحر، موقوف عليها سفينها
And Safun and the pleasant river and a deep part, ... of the sea, its ships are moored upon it.
وتقول في النصب والجر رأيت صفين ومررت بصفين، ومن أعرب النون قال هذه صفين ورأيت صفين.
And you say in the accusative and genitive: I saw safayn, and I passed by safayn. And whoever inflects the nun says: This is safayn, and I saw safayn.
لأن نونه زائدة بدليل قولهم صفون فيمن أعربه بالحروف.
Because its nun is extra, as evidenced by their saying safun for those who inflect it with letters.
