The summit of everything: its highest part.
وشعفة الجبل، بالتحريك: رأسه، والجمع شعف وشعاف وشعوف وهي رؤوس الجبال.
And the summit of the mountain, when vocalized: its head, and the plural is shu'uf, shu'aaf, and shu'oof, and they are the heads of mountains.
من خير الناس رجل في شعفة من الشعاف في غنيمة له حتى يأتيه الموت وهو معتزل الناس ؛
One of the best people is a man on a mountain peak with his flock until death comes to him, while he is secluded from people;
يريد به رأس جبل من الجبال ويجمع شعفات، ومنه قيل لأعلى شعر الراس شعفة،
He means by it the head of a mountain, and its plural is shu'afaat. From this, the highest part of the hair on the head is called shu'fah,
فقال عراض الوجوه صغار العيون شهب الشعاف من كل حدب ينسلون ؛
So the broad-faced, small-eyed, grey-haired ones from every slope came forth;
قوله صهب الشعاف يريد شعور رؤوسهم، واحدتها شعفة، وهي أعلى الشعر.
His saying 'sahb al-shu'aaf' means the hairs of their heads, the singular of which is shu'fah, and it is the highest part of the hair.
شعفات الرأس: أعالي شعره، وقيل: قنازعه،
Shu'afaat of the head: the highest parts of his hair, and it is said: its forelocks,
فسقط البرنس عن رأسي فأغاثني الله بشعيفتين في رأسي أي ذؤابتين على رأسه من شعره وقتاه الضرب،
So the cap fell from my head, and God saved me with two shu'ayfat on my head, meaning two forelocks of his hair that protected him from the blow,
وما على رأسه إلا شعيفات أي شعيرات من الذؤابة.
And on his head were only shu'ayfaat, meaning small hairs from the forelock.
ويقال لذؤابة الغلام شعفة؛
And the forelock of a boy is called a shu'fah;
والشعف: شبه رؤوس الكمأة والأثافي تستدير في أعلاها.
And al-shu'uf: like the tops of truffles and tripods that are rounded at their tops.
والشعف رأس الكمأة والأثافي المستديرة.
And al-shu'uf is the head of a truffle and a rounded tripod.
وشعفات الأثافي والأبنية: رؤوسها؛
And shu'afaat of tripods and buildings: their heads;
وشعفة القلب: رأسه عند معلق النياط.
And the shu'fah of the heart: its head near the attachment of the aorta.
والشعف: شدة الحب.
And al-shu'uf: intense love.
ما علمت أحدا جعل للقلب شعفة غير الليث، والحب الشديد يتمكن من سواد القلب لا من طرفه.
I have not known anyone to assign a shu'fah to the heart except Al-Layth, and intense love takes hold of the blackness of the heart, not its edge.
شعفني حبها: أصاب ذلك مني.
Her love consumed me: it affected me.
يقال: شعف الهناء البعير إذا بلغ منه ألمه.
It is said: Al-hinaa' (cautery) affects the camel when its pain reaches it.
والشعف: إحراق الحب القلب مع لذة يجدها كما أن البعير إذا هنئ بالقطران يجد له لذة مع حرقة؛
And al-shu'uf: the burning of love in the heart with a pleasure found, just as a camel, when cauterized with tar, finds pleasure with burning;
لتقتلني، وقد شعفت فؤادها، ... كما شعف المهنوءة الرجل الطالي
Let her kill me, for she has consumed her heart... as the cauterized one was affected by the man applying the cautery
والمصدر الشعف كالألم؛
And the masdar is al-shu'uf, like pain;
ومطافه لك ذكرى وشعوف
And its course for you is a memory and intense love
قال: فيحتمل أن يكون جمع شعف، ويحتمل أن يكون مصدرا وهو الظاهر.
He said: it is possible that it is a plural of shu'uf, and it is possible that it is a masdar, which is the apparent meaning.
والشعاف: أن يذهب الحب بالقلب،
And al-shu'aaf: is for love to consume the heart,
وقوله تعالى: قد شعفها حبا ، قرئت بالعين والغين،
And His saying, the Almighty: 'Qad sha'afahaa hubban' (She was consumed by love), it is read with 'ayn and ghayn,
فمن قرأها بالعين المهملة فمعناه تيمها، ومن قرأها بالغين المعجمة أي أصاب شغافها.
So whoever reads it with the unpointed 'ayn means she was captivated, and whoever reads it with the pointed 'ghayn' means it reached her heart's core.
وشعفه الهوى إذا بلغ منه،
And desire affects him when it reaches him,
وفلان مشعوف بفلانة،
And so-and-so is mash'oof with so-and-so (deeply in love or infatuated),
وقراءة الحسن شعفها ، بالعين المهملة، هو من قولهم شعفت بها كأنه ذهب بها كل مذهب،
And Al-Hasan's reading 'sha'afahaa', with the unpointed 'ayn, is from their saying 'sha'aftu bihaa' as if it took her in every direction,
وقيل: بطنها حبا.
And it is said: her belly with love.
وشعفه حبها يشعفه إذا ذهب بفؤاده مثل شعفه المرض إذا أذابه.
And her love affects him, it affects him, if it takes away his heart, like illness affects him if it melts him away.
وشعفه الحب: أحرق قلبه، وقيل: أمرضه.
And love affects him: it burns his heart, and it is said: it sickens him.
وقد شعف بكذا، فهو مشعوف.
And he has been affected by such-and-such, so he is mash'oof.
الشعف، بالعين غير معجمة، أن يقع في القلب شيء فلا يذهب.
Al-shu'uf, with the unpointed 'ayn, is for something to fall into the heart and not leave.
يقال: شعفني يشعفني شعفا؛
It is said: it affected me, it affected me, a deep effect;
وأنشد للحرث بن حلزة اليشكري: ويئست مما كان يشعفني ... منها، ولا يسليك كالياس
And he recited for Al-Harith bin Hillizah Al-Yashkuri: And I despaired of what used to affect me from her... and nothing consoles you like despair.
ويقال: يكون بمعنى علا حبها على قلبه.
And it is said: it means her love rose above his heart.
والمشعوف: الذاهب القلب، وأهل هجر يقولون للمجنون مشعوف.
And al-mash'oof: the one whose heart is gone; the people of Hajar call a madman mash'oof.
وبه شعاف أي جنون؛
And he has shu'aaf, meaning madness;
والمعنى هو مذعور خائف قلق.
And the meaning is that he is startled, fearful, anxious.
والشعف: شعف الدابة حين تذعر ثم نقلته العرب من الدواب إلى الناس؛
And al-shu'uf: the fear of a beast when it is startled, then the Arabs transferred it from beasts to humans;
فالشعف الأول من الحب، والثاني من الذعر.
So the first shu'uf is from love, and the second is from fear.
ويقال: ألقى عليه شعفه وشغفه وملقه وحبه وحبته، بمعنى واحد
And it is said: he cast upon him his shu'uf, and his shaghf, and his mulq, and his hubb, and his hubbah, meaning one thing
وفي حديث عذاب القبر: فإذا كان الرجل صالحا جلس في قبره غير فزع ولا مشعوف ؛
And in the hadith about the torment of the grave: If the man is righteous, he will sit in his grave without fear or being mash'oof;
الشعف: شدة الفزع حتى يذهب بالقلب؛
Al-shu'uf: intense fear until it takes away the heart;
شعف الكلاب الضاريات فؤاده، ... فإذا يرى الصبح المصدق يفزع
The fierce dogs affected his heart, ... and when he sees the dawning morning, he is startled
فإنه استعمل الشعف في الفزع؛
For he used al-shu'uf in the sense of fear;
يقول: ذهبت بقلبه الكلاب فإذا نظر إلى الصبح ترقب الكلاب أن تأتيه.
He means: the dogs took his heart away, so when he sees the morning, he expects the dogs to come for him.
والشعفة: المطرة الهينة.
And al-shu'fah: the light rain.
وفي المثل: ما تنفع الشعفة في الوادي الرغب؛
And in the proverb: What good is a light rain in a wide valley;
يضرب مثلا للذي يعطيك قليلا لا يقع منك موقعا ولا يسد مسدا، والوادي الرغب: الواسع الذي لا يملؤه إلا السيل الجحاف.
It is a metaphor for one who gives you little that does not suffice or meet the need, and Al-Waadi Al-Raghb: is the wide valley that only a torrential flood can fill.
والشعفة: القطرة الواحدة من المطر.
And al-shu'fah: a single drop of rain.
والشعف: مطرة يسيرة؛ عن ابن الأعرابي؛
And al-shu'uf: a light rain; according to Ibn Al-A'rabi;
فلا غرو إلا نروهم من نبالنا، ... كما اصعنفرت معزى الحجاز من الشعف
So it is no wonder but that we pierce them with our arrows, ... as the goats of Hijaz scattered from the light rain
وشعيف: اسم.
And Shu'ayf: a name.
ويقال للرجل الطويل: شنعاف، والنون زائدة.
And a tall man is called shan'aaf, and the 'n' is extra.
وشعفين: موضع، ففي المثل: لكن بشعفين «2» أنت جدود؛
And Shu'affayn: a place, so in the proverb: But at Shu'affayn you are prosperous;
يضرب مثلا لمن كان في حال سيئة فحسنت حاله.
It is a metaphor for one who was in a bad state and his condition improved.
وشعفان جبلان بالغور، وذكر المثل؛
And Shu'faan are two mountains in the Ghawr, and the proverb is mentioned;
قاله رجل التقط منبوذة ورآها يوما تلاعب أترابها وتمشي على أربع وتقول: احلبوني فإني خلفة.
A man said it who picked up an abandoned girl and saw her one day playing with her peers and walking on all fours, saying: Milk me, for I am a replacement.
