The distinction between al-Sharaf and al-Sharīf is a valley called al-Tasrīr; what was eastward is al-Sharīf, and what was westward is al-Sharaf.
وفي حديث ابن مسعود، رضي الله عنه: يوشك أن لا يكون بين شراف وأرض كذا جماء ولا ذات قرن ؛ شراف: موضع، وقيل: ماء لبني أسد.
And in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ūd, may God be pleased with him: It is likely that there will be nothing between Sharrāf and such-and-such land that is hornless or has a horn; Sharrāf: a place, and it was said: a water source for Banu Asad.
وفي الحديث: أن عمر حمى الشرف والربذة ؛ قال ابن الأثير: كذا روي بالشين وفتح الراء، قال: وبعضهم يرويه بالمهملة وكسر الراء.
And in the hadith: That Umar declared al-Sharaf and al-Rabdhah as protected areas; Ibn al-Athīr said: It is narrated thus with the letter 'shīn' and 'fath al-rā', he said: And some narrate it with the unpointed letter and 'kasr al-rā'.
وفي الحديث: ما أحب أن أنفخ في الصلاة وأن لي ممر الشرف.
And in the hadith: I would not like to blow in the prayer, and that I have the passage of al-Sharaf.
والشريف، مصغر: ماء لبني نمير.
