يعني أنهم جعلوا آثار حوافر الخيل على آثار أخفاف الإبل، فكأنهم طارقوها بها أي خصفوها بها كما تخصف النعل
Meaning they made the tracks of the horses' hooves upon the tracks of the camels' feet, as if they had overlaid them with them, i.e., stitched them with them as a sandal is stitched.
وطفقا يخصفان عليهما من ورق الجنة
And they began to stitch together for themselves leaves from Paradise.
يقول: يلزقان بعضه على بعض ليسترا به عورتهما أي يطابقان بعض الورق على بعض
It means: they stick them to each other to cover their nakedness, i.e., they overlap some leaves upon others.
الاختصاف أن يأخذ العريان ورقا عراضا فيخصف بعضها على بعض ويستتر بها
Al-ikhtiṣāf is for a naked person to take wide leaves and join some of them to others and cover himself with them.
إذا دخل أحدكم الحمام فعليه بالنشير ولا يخصف
When one of you enters the bathroom, he should wear a loincloth and not cover himself [with his hand].
وكتيبة خصيف: وهو لون الحديد
And a khasiif army: which is the color of iron.
خصفت الإبل الخيل تبعتها
The camels followed the horses.
والخصيف: اللبن الحليب يصب عليه الرائب
And al-khasiif: milk into which sour milk is poured.
ثم كساه الخصف فلم يقبلها
Then he clothed it with al-khaṣf, and it did not accept it.
فأقبل رجل في بصره سوء فمر ببئر عليها خصفة فوطئها فوقع فيها
A man with poor eyesight approached and passed by a well that had a khusfah on it, he stepped on it and fell into it.
وكانت له خصفة يحجرها ويصلي فيها
And he had a khusfah which he used to fence off and pray in.
وأنه كان مضطجعا على خصفة
And that he was lying on a khusfah.
خصفه الشيب إذا استوى البياض والسواد
Gray hair has 'khṣafahu' him when the white and black became equal.
وحبل أخصف وخصيف: فيه لونان من سواد وبياض
And a rope akhṣaf and khiṣīf: has two colors of black and white.
والأخصف من الخيل والغنم: الأبيض الخاصرتين والجنبين
And al-akhṣaf from horses and sheep: white in the loins and sides.
والأخصف: الظليم لسواد فيه وبياض
And al-akhṣaf: the male ostrich due to the blackness and whiteness in it.
والنعامة خصفاء
And the female ostrich is khisfā'.
وكتيبة خصيفة: لما فيها من صدإ الحديد وبياضه
And a khasiifah army: due to the rust and whiteness of iron within it.
إذا بلغت الشهر التاسع من يوم لقحت ثم ألقته: قد خصفت تخصف خصافا، وهي خصوف

يقال: خصفت الإبل الخيل تبعتها
It is said: The camels followed the horses.
فغزا يوما فأقبل سهم حتى وقع عند حافر فرسه فتحرك ساعة، فقال: إن لهذا السهم سببا ينجثه، فاحتفر عنه فإذا هو قد وقع على نفق يربوع فأصاب رأسه فتحرك اليربوع ساعة ثم مات
One day he went to war, and an arrow came and fell near his horse's hoof, and it moved for a while. He said: This arrow has a cause that moves it. He dug around it and found it had fallen on a jerboa's burrow and hit its head. The jerboa moved for a while and then died.
ويضرب المثل فيقال: أجرأ من فارس خصاف
And the proverb is said: Braver than Fāris Khiṣāf.
وذلك أن بعض الملوك طلبه من صاحبه ليستفحله فمنعه إياه وخصاه
And that is because some king asked for him from his owner to make him a stallion, but he refused him and castrated him.
الإخصاف شدة العدو
Al-ikhṣāf is the intensity of running.
