وفي حديث أبي هريرة: فسمعت أمي خشف قدمي.

And in the narration of Abu Hurayrah: My mother heard the faint sound of my footsteps.

والخشف: صوت ليس بالشديد.

وخشفة الضبع: صوتها.

And the khashfah of the hyena: its sound.

والخشفة: قف قد غلبت عليه السهولة.

And in the narration of Mu'awiyah: Sهم ibn Ghalib was among the leaders of the Khawarij. He went out to Basra, and Abdullah ibn Amir gave him security, so Mu'awiyah wrote to him: If you had killed him, it would have been a covenant that you had hastened to break.

يقال: خاشف إلى الشر إذا بادر إليه؛ يريد: لم يكن في قتلك له إلا أن يقال قد أخفر ذمته.

It is said: He hastened to evil if he rushed into it; meaning: in killing him, it would only be said that he had broken his covenant.
