Imru' al-Qais said: 'As if they were scattered hirshaf... in the air, when the cavalry flashed, likening the horses to locusts.' In Al-Tahdhib: it means the infantry, and it was said: they are the infantry in this verse.
يا أيها الحرشف ذا الأكل الكدم
O swarm of locusts, voracious eaters!
أرى كتيبة حرشف ؛
I see a battalion of hirshaf;
الحرشف: الرجالة شبهوا بالحرشف من الجراد وهو أشده أكلا؛
Al-hirshaf: the infantry, likened to hirshaf of locusts, which are the most voracious eaters;
يقال: ما ثم غير حرشف رجال أي ضعفاء وشيوخ، وصغار كل شيء حرشفه.
It is said: 'There is nothing there but hirshaf of men,' meaning the weak and the elderly, and the young of everything are its hirshaf.
والحرشف: ضرب من السمك.
