I see a man who impresses me, and I say: Does he have a trade? If they say: No, he falls in my estimation.
وقيل: معنى الحديث الأول هو أن يكون من الحرفة والحرفة، بالضم والكسر
And it was said: The meaning of the first hadith is that it pertains to al-hirfah (craftsmanship) and al-hirfah (literary pursuit), with dammah and kasrah respectively.
ومن قولهم: حرفة الأدب، بالكسر
And from their saying: hirfah al-adab (the pursuit of literature), with kasrah.
ويقال: لا تحارف أخاك بالسوء أي تجازه بسوء صنيعه تقايسه وأحسن إذا أساء واصفح عنه
And it is said: Do not retaliate against your brother with evil, meaning do not repay his bad deed with a similar one; be good when he does evil and forgive him.
أحرف الرجل إذا جازى على خير أو شر
A man is aḥrafa if he recompenses for good or evil.
إن العبد ليحارف عن عمله الخير أو الشر أي يجازى
Indeed, the servant is aḥrafa for his deed, good or evil, meaning he is recompensed.
وسلط عليهم موت طاعون دفيف يحرف القلوب أي يميلها ويجعلها على حرف
And death by a swift plague was sent upon them, which turns hearts, meaning it inclines them and makes them on the edge.
ووصف سفيان بكفه فحرفها أي أمالها
And Sufyan described with his palm and harrafa it, meaning he inclined it.
وقال بيده فحرفها كأنه يريد القتل ووصف بها قطع السيف بحده
And he gestured with his hand and harrafa it, as if he meant killing, and described with it the cutting of a sword with its edge.

والمحرف والمحراف: الميل الذي تقاس به الجراحات
And al-muḥarraf and al-miḥrāf: the probe by which wounds are measured.
إذا الطبيب بمحرافيه عالجها، ... زادت على النقر أو تحريكها ضجما
When the physician treated it with his miḥrāfayn, ... it increased from probing or moving it.
والمحارف والمحارفة: مقايسة الجرح بالمحراف، وهو الميل الذي تسبر به الجراحات
And al-maḥārif and al-maḥārafah: measuring the wound with the miḥrāf, which is the probe by which wounds are sounded.
كما زل عن رأس الشجيج المحارف
As the probe slipped from the head of the wounded man.
ودعوت لهفك بعد فاقرة، ... تبدي محارفها عن العظم
And I called out to your regret after a calamity, ... revealing its probes from the bone.
فإن تك قسر أعقبت من جنيدب، ... فقد علموا في الغزو كيف نحارف

الحرف: حب الرشاد، واحدته حرفة

كل طعام يحرق فم آكله بحرارة مذاقه حريف، بالتشديد، للذي يلذع اللسان بحرافته
Every food that burns the mouth of its eater with the heat of its taste is ḥarīf, with shaddah, for that which stings the tongue with its pungency.
